All good suggestions. But Myakka River State Park has been open for quite some time now after the hurricane came through. Some significant damage done, but still worth a visit.

I agree about Myakka River State Park. It claims to have the world’s largest airboat. They take you out to spot alligators sunning but there is plenty of other wildlife and plants to photograph I have taken people there many times

My wife didn't want a camera other than her phone (an S22 and almost had to force her to get that to replace her hand-me-down S9. She did appreciate the upgrade.) But I did notice that she only used half her binocular (looking with one eye). So I had my daughter get her a monocular with a sell phone adapter after a bird watcher let her take pictures through his scope last fall. The mini tripod that came with monocular would not work with the cell phone attachment. So I am letting her use my tabletop tripod (which I almost never use.) Here is the result. A lot of work to not want a camera. But she has taken some good photos of her birds.

I just downloaded loaded On1 Photo Raw and it runs super fast on my computer. A few months ago I bought a gaming computer to run AutoCAD Civil 3D so it is pretty well spececed

I have both the R7 and the Tamron 18-400. Used it to take action shots of youth football. Took great images, even zoomed to 300mm. This is one of the 300mm shots.

That is what I was looking for. Actual experience. I use it with the T7i which I noticed you are selling.

I have two more questions for you. Does the IBIS stabilize the image in the EVF and do you have any focusing issues with the 18-400 on the R7?

I am looking at getting an R7 body when it becomes available. Does anyone have experience using the Tamron 18-400 EF-S lens on an R7 or R10? I know that you would need an adapter.

What I want is a mirrorless APS-C camera from Canon with an R mount! They made it easy for me to wait!

That is exactly what I am waiting for. I am hoping that it is out and I can get my hands on it by late summer 2022.

The 100mm less reach is possibly made up by getting lots more pixels later on.

Also I have read that the Tamron is fairly soft in the 500-600mm range.

I was struggling between buying a Tamron 150-600 and waiting a year to get an R series camera with an RF 100-500. I had decided on waiting but was waffling when I saw this post. I take it as a sign to wait.

Welcome Billy,
I'm 74 when I bought my D5300 5 years ago I got the "Nikon D5300 for Dummies" by Julie Adair King. I was able to sit with the book and camera and work through all the menus and settings at my own pace. There is a D5600 for dummies, used copies for under $10.00. It gave me all I needed to know when I took the camera to Antarctica 3 months later. The best thing you can do is go out and shoot and post images here.
Good luck,
Bob

I am 60. When I bought my T7i I was basically new to digital photography having used film in my youth. I bought the T7i for Dummies and read it through. Then after reading other books, articles and posts reread the Dummies a year later and it made even more sense. I have been using it for 3 years now and am just beginning to feel that I have a good handle on things. I hope that you enjoy your camera a new hobby :-)

I strongly advise getting a camera, such as above, with a viewfinder. You most likely will be wanting pictures outside on sunny days (i.e., Vacation Bible School) and having the viewfinder is a big plus. Also, some people, like me, really have difficulty holding a camera without a viewfinder still. Since multiple people may be using it I would suggest making it is as flexible as possible. Again I agree this is an excellent choice.

Finally today I did a comparison test using the off-brand teleconverter v. cropping in using the Canon 100-300mm alone. I took some still life shots of some of my wife's flowers. I had my wife (my most important critic) compare some with similar post-processing using three different post-processing approaches. I had her compare side by side on the screen the three pairs of shots (mixing up the sides.) On one pair she could hardly tell the difference but picked the teleconverter one slightly but on the other two pair she picked the cropped shots. So I guess the teleconverter goes away and I think through upgrading my lens now to a Canon 100-400, or wait and save nickels (a big pile of them) to see if the APS-C R series comes out and get an RF 100-500. The only other option now is to get the R5 and I don't see spending that many nickels any time soon. I am having major surgery on Tuesday (the day after tomorrow) and my recovery may determine my course of action. Better now may win out over much better in an uncertain future.

Amfoto1 has a knowledgeable reply and analysis, but it sounds like Jonathan chem E is looking for a budget 400 mm lens. I’m not a pro photographer, but I have a doctorate degree and a keen eye and my Tamron lenses perform well enough to make me wonder why I spent so much on my “L” lenses. I’m sure the “L” lenses are better weather proofed; however, I don’t go out and shoot in the rain. Life’s too short to stand out in the rain and shoot pictures. In Texas, a lightning strike might find you.

Never mind I misread something.

The last time I use t3i i realize that isn’t a body to keep for me. The limits alone on the focus system wasn’t what I wanted. now I got a pro body/ lenses and I updated my knowledge......if I would just shoot landscape the t7 is great but not for real birding and action.....

What camera did you get? Are you happy with it? I am looking at the R5 or R6.

I am mostly into wildlife photography and landscapes but do need to carry around a camera some for my street tourist type stuff, and I do the occasional portrait or group sometimes. My body is a T7i. I have an EFS 10-18 IS STM, a EF 50MM IS F1.8, an EFS 18-135 IS STM, an EF-S 55-250mm F4-5.6 is STM, an EF 70-300 F4-5.6 IS USM and a Kenko TELEPLUS Pro 300 DG 1.4X Teleconverter for Canon EF Mount. What I am thinking is that I could trade everything, except the 10-18 and 50mm in on a used Tamron 18-400 and only be out a couple of hundred dollars and have a much simpler kit. My question is I am giving up some lens performance quality by going to the one lens verses changing out the lenses as needed? I don't need to change lenses often. If I am in a general location I use the 18-135, if I am doing landscapes I switch to the 10-18 sometimes. Usually I a know I am doing wildlife and have one of the long lenses on. Before I make the switch my wife, who is my main critic (in a good sense of the word) wants me to be sure it would be a good move. I have tried to research the lenses but no good side to side comparison between the 70-300 and 18-400. Thanks for your input.
