The effective focal length will be 1.5x the focal length of that particular lens..So if you have a 50mm FX lens, it will simulate a 75mm lens and give you the angle of view of a 75mm lens..The image it produces on a D300 which has a DX sensor, should be very sharp, as the camera will be using only the central portion (the sharpest area in most lenses) of that lens.

I use an Bogen (Manfrotto) # 056 3-D pan/tilt head, with an ARCA type clamp mounted in the head platform. ((Arca type mount clamps and mating plates are the ONLY Connections I use..) I have this head mounted on a now discontinued BOGEN #3018, which is probably the BEST and STURDIEST Monopod ever made. If you can find one of these 3018' somewhere like eBay, and get one of the above mentioned heads, I guarantee you'll be in "MONOPOD HEAVEN"!!.. I use it for wildlife amd sports with either a 70-300 Tamron VC, or a 400mm Tokina AF mounted on my D7000 Nikon.

This photo looks great to me..Did you enlarge it for printing?..How big in inches?..Full frame or cropped sensor?..Curious what aperture this was shot at as well..All info should be in your original file metadata

Looks like you may be looking for an "L" ARCA type bracket for your camera..I've never seen one with a "hinge"..One of the best sources for Arca related stuff is from Hejnar who sells on ebay
You can find him here for excellent machined product at the best prices:

I'm curious..What do you see that was wrong with these?..They are absolutely STUNNING..Were you using a tripod or a monopod, or shooting with no support other than your arms? How about back button focus?? All seems very sharp, with the eyes especially so to me on my 23" IPS monitor for the sizes as displayed.

I'd ask for a refund from the seller. Sounds like it's pretty-well worn.
Just my 2 cents

I "think" Kata sold out to Manfrotto..They supposedly have re-engineered some of the bags (hopefully for the better..)

I'm in the same boat as you, Graham, as I'll be 71 next week..I just hope our "boat" is NOT the Titanic!

For the record, I find 500 PX most inspirational..Some "over-the-top" imagery, but I still view it as "Freedom of Art and Expression".

No, it will not try to re-focus from the shutter button..If you have your thumb on the back button simultaneously, it will constantly re-focus as necessary, which is the MAIN reason for using back-button focus..You will get a much higher rate of "keepers" on a moving subject.

Like Gene.I have the Photographers CC2014 including Photoshop and Lightroom..For the $10/month, you can't beatit..You will ALWAYS have the latest iteration of each..The updates just keep coming. I use to shell out $200-250 every 18 months or so. No more waiting for the Latest Versions..It's a no-brainer for me.

I purchased mine for $350 net inclusive of a $50 rebate in 2011 shortly after acquiring my D7000..Absolutely GREAT lens..The VC ia amazing..Image quality is fantastic, especially considering its price point. An excellent match for your D7000/D7001..Im beginning to try this combination out for birds in flight using back-button-focusing (with the VC OFF) I'm just beginning with this method, , but preliminary results have been "promising"..I say go fort this lens..It is considered to be at least or better than the Nikon VR that it competes with for less dollars..I say "GO FOR IT!"

Absolutely "DITTO" for me!..Most recently their main competitor had a "sale" on a tripod which I had just received from B&H..With a phone call from me, they not only met their competitor's pricing, but beat them by $10 USD, and credited me back..B&H ROCKS!..But please understand, that I ALSO do business with their competitor, and have nothing bad to say about them as well.

If you have a POWERFULL flash, I have had excellent results on weddings with a "LUMIQUEST" 80-20 for a room with normal ceilings...You would however need a rotating flash bracket to do verticals. Today, I mostly use a Gary Fong litesphere with a "chrome-dome" the way he shows how to use it by utilizing your flash "perendicular', with the internal chrome dome reflector facing your subject...No more redeye, and VERY smooth flattering light , and NO NEED for a flash bracket! I usually bump My 16 mpxl D7000 from 800 to 1600 with only very minor noise reduction,(if ANY at all!) in PS CC.

I've only read about the Graslon, and have no experience with it

Good luck with you choice!

Raw files are NOT an end-result..They are like a "negative" that needs to be thoroughly "tweeked", and then converted to a Tiff or a JPG for printing or email, etc,,When you do the conversion, the RAW file remains like a negative, and you can re-edit it as many times as you wish and do more conversions to you liking..NEVER delete your raw files un less they are grossly fuzzy, or your subject is totally out-of-frame.
