The OP states he is considering a light weight camera and a couple lenses to cover street and landscape photography. One camera that hasn’t been mentioned is the Sony A6xxx series. The A6100 and the Sony 18-135 zoom lens pretty much covers that requirement. For street photography the Sony E-PZ 10-20 lens is a good choice. The overall package isn’t necessarily inexpensive, but it’s still affordable and would fit his needs. The A6xxx series cameras are easy to use, reliable, and produce excellent images. Even the lowly, long in the tooth A6000 is a good choice and budget friendly.

I didn’t think of that. Also a great idea! The Sony A6xxx is a great alternative to the mu43 systems.

One question. As I mentioned and
I think Chg_Canon mentioned the IBIS is an important feature for us traveling photogs. How does the Sony match up in that area?

I see a lot of folks in tourist areas carrying them for sure. May be a good alternative.

Don'tknow--never shot a Panasonic, but love my two OM-1s.

I keep a 12-100 f/4 on one and a 150-400 f/4.5 on the other. Have a few other lenses, but I almost never use them.

Would love a full frame the same size, weight and cost as my OM systems, but physics.

Shot Nikon for years, but love the m43 form factor, superior weather sealing, best IBIS, and techie features.

YMMV.

I am almost in your camp. That 150-500 is pretty big and expensive. It could be grounds for a divorce or maybe justifiable homicide in our house if the Mrs. were to walk in and see that! I don’t think any jury would convict! So I have a 100-400. On safari I carried two bodies. One with the 12-100 and 100-400 so I had 24-800 covered! A perfect system for my purposes.

I’ve not used the Pany but would certainly do so! I’ve held them and certainly like their menu systems compared to my OMD Em1 2&3. What you will find is that most (many) micro 43 users are not married to their gear, understand the limitations of their gear, appreciate the improvement in both Pany and Oly (and all systems generally) and can actually have a dialogue about it without rancor. It’s a pretty technically inclined crowd.

I think Burk will weigh in on this. Pany is generally better for video. Oly is a bit better for the still stuff. I think for the average Joe/Jane it doesn’t make a lot of difference. What is great is that someone like me can have a bevy of Oly lenses and purchase a Pany to start video productions surrounding a certain little rambunctious boy!

I can say that I also have the Pany 100-400 lens. It is a good lens with excellent sharpness but the build quality is nowhere near the Oly pro lenses.

The M43 world is fun for sure. Which is what it’s all about.

I’ve used Blurb in the past and struggled with text. I couldn’t figure out how to make the text big enough in the draft stage to accurately proofread. I will say that aside from that the books were stunning. I’ll take a look at the you tube you suggested.

Blurb also has a web based way of making a book which is easier to deal with.

OmD m4/3 midlevel models.

Tiny fast 12 or 17mm for street.

Plenty of longer yet compact FLs, you pick.

Body model EM-5 III or EM-1 III would be versatile affordable midlevel choices while avoiding the bottom feeders.

(FWIW, I know all that gear first hand.)

Exactly.

The perfect system for travel for the person who wants an interchangeable lens system. It is a good balance between weight, utility and image quality. I am always amazed more people do not use it! It’s a fun (and challenging at times) little system.

Used micro 4/3 gear is cheaper than the other brands for a lot of reasons…demand and cheaper original costs. The small primes are tiny. The pro line of lenses, if one wants to get into that, are as good as any lens made.

The Om-5 body is small yet mighty. The older version of that same body, as you mentioned, the em5 mark 3 is also a fantastic body. And the in body image stabilization of the system is darned near Voodoo. Actually the smaller sensor size makes stabilization easier. I can hand hold for several seconds. And if I am near a tree or similar I can use it as a brace for maybe 5 seconds. No tripod needed! When I do static indoor photography, such as a museum, the IBIS allows me to use pretty low ISO,
and the mirrorless aspect of the camera allows for some pretty interesting exposures.

Add to that a small prime and the very light 14-150 lens and you’re set.

See m-u43.com for for a dedicated forum and sales of the micro 4/3 gear. Often excellent photography discussions (very infrequent snark) and good deals on used gear.

I do have a few small primes I’d be willing to sell as well. You get into the system pm me if you’re interested.

On the health front I got some pretty bad news a while back. All I can say is keep moving!

Julieanne Kost is golden. I had the pleasure of introducing her at the Photo Marketing Association's Digital Imaging Marketing Association conference in the late 2000s. I've heard her training sessions three times over the years. She is among my favorite COMMUNICATORS, and just an all-around great person who really cares about her craft. http://www.jkost.com is her blog site.

👍 Does she work for Adobe? Her stuff is masterfully done. It seems like a big money production. Lesson plans are super tight. and finely edited video.

Set jpeg at 100% and upload. No need to resize or change aspect ratios.

And a word to the wise. I, literally two nights ago, taught a class on making photo books for my photo club. I typically use MixBook but am going to switch to using the book module on LR which is Blurb. The integration of LR features and the Book module are amazing…such as being able to make a collection in LR, arrange it as desired and drag into the book template. And here’s the kicker: you can automatically imprint select meta data on photos using this system . Imagine being able to put a title into the meta data field for title and when you put it in a book it puts the title on the pic! Such as, “Grandma Lucy Smith with grandson Bobby Smith.” Think that might be of interest 20 years from now?

I think you can put title and date as well. Or nothing at all!

The biggie is that Blurb uses Mohawk paper which you can get a sample of. Super high quality.

The module is a bit different to use but it’s do-able. Look no further the Julie Ann Kost for expert instructions on YouTube I think she works for Adobe.

I think you do this once and you’ll never go back.

I didn’t look at your post as a critique. I should have addressed that to the crowd. I think you commented on lighting and I should have limited my comment to that

If those are ‘clock times’, it depends on time zones.

We currently live near the western edge of the “Eastern Time” zone; sun is highest near 1 pm as I recall; it was earlier when we lived near Springfield, Mass - about 800 miles East. It will be different tomorrow after clocks “fall back”.

I travel quite a bit. When we are traveling I’m stuck with the lighting that exists at that moment. We could be in a group on the move, have an itinerary that does not allow for me to hang out at a spot to wait for the lighting to change or Im too lazy to get up early to do take pics! The traveling photog needs to use the light as it exists. That, for me, is a constant challenge and was an issue in this shot.

The OP did not ask for critique which is his choice.

Hi

I have an album of approx 250 processed and edited RAW photos and some videos from a wildlife trip that I would like to share with my friends (we are currently all in different countries ). 200 of these are in my Lightroom mobile folder (synced with LrClassic) and the rest are videos in my iPhone (PS: I have tried to import the iPhone vids to Lightroom but many of them were not accepted even though they are playing fine in the phone).

Is there a "platform" where one can upload these so that they can be accessed by my friends without losing quality? Ideally I would like to take them through each of these one by one, explaining each photo, so it would be nice for each of us to be viewing the same photo while I speak.

Any suggestions?

I believe on the Lightroom mobile app, if you have an album with photos in it, in the upper right hand corner, you can click on the three little dots, and there is a sharing function available. I’ve not tried it, but it appears to me that you input the information of the receiver and it will send a link to the album. What I don’t know, and you may need to investigate, is if the user hast to have Lightroom mobile.

Thanks in advance. I currently keep my photos on an external drive that I attach to the computer only when I need to. I keep most of my other files on the computer and some on another ext. drive. I back up to an external drive and the cloud (Backblaze). I haven't been using any software for my local backups but would like to and welcome suggestions.
I hope you don't mind a few questions: br > I ... (show quote)
I like dropbox because it acts like another drive on my computer but the files are on the cloud. If for some reason I need a file while I am traveling and only have my phone. I can access it. For example, if I am unexpectedly at the doctors office with my mother and need to show that I have power of attorney for medical purposes, I can pull that up right away and show it to the doctors office.

I keep other files on there, such as lab reports from my doctor so that when I see another doctor, I can actually pull those up and show them or supply them to that treating physician.

When I was involved in consulting, I often had thousands upon thousands of documents that I had to review. I often reviewed them on my laptop, but also sometimes would review them on my iPad. Using a program called Notability I could mark up the documents and have them with me at all times on my iPad. Being able to sync that across multiple platforms was very very beneficial to me.
If I did not have those in electronic format, I would have literally had to carry around a milk crate, full of documents.
And if I had need for a reference doc it was at my fingertips. I have a whole library at my fingertips.

It saves on hard drive space certainly for my computer. My computer has very little on it, and it runs very efficiently.

As far as attaching the SSD full-time I typically do leave it attached. However, I do note that it becomes warm sometimes so that may not be the best strategy. I defer to my more tech savvy colleages here on the hog on that issue.

I do not have a particular back up program to back up my SSD drive. I simply drag the files over from one SSD drive to another to copy it. There’s probably a better way to do that but I have not investigated that.

I called 1-800-645-6687 for Nikon custom support and they were very nice and worked with me for forty five minutes trying to find an answer at no charge and there isn't one for locking the focus point on my Nikon Z6ii camera. There is also no way to disable the toggle switch. There is several options that the center button of the toggle switch can be programed to do but lock the focus point is not one of the options. It would be great if they would add this choice to the menu in the next software update. My system is as follows:

All files except photographs are kept in Dropbox.

All photos kept on an attached SSD on computer.

Photos are backed up on another SSD and kept at home.

Some selected photos in certain collections also automatically backed up to the INCLUDED Adobe photography plan cloud.

Working programs such as MS Office, Quicken, LR and PS on computer hard drive. All are subscription based. I share MS office with a family member so the price is minuscule compared to benefit.

Photos on iPhone backed up to iCloud.

All is backed up to Carbonite.

My computer blew up a while back. I bought a new computer and was up and running with no loss in about 60 minutes. People harangue against subscriptions but when a computer blows up recovery is easy.

Passwords kept in a digital vault and hard copy in a very safe place.

OneDrive turned off.

Costs a few hundred bucks a year but worth it for me. I brew my own coffee and avoid $7 skinny frapochino lattes with a hazelnut topping so I come out ahead!
