I bought one a couple years ago and I really like it. I also have a d5100 and my wife uses the 3100 now. If you can afford an 18 to 105 lens, or an 18 to 140, that will give you a little more "reach" and add to the experience. Great camera.
A great collection. I especially liked the old ships and sailors, since I used to sail on freighters as an engineer. Thanks for the post.
Greetings from a fellow Pennsylvanian from Cheyney. You will enjoy this site. Lots of great advice to be had here.
Thanks for all the great information. I was a little skeptical about this company, but sometimes there might be a real bargain out there. Thanks again, I will stick to reputable dealers. PhotoPhred
I am curious if anyone here has purchased anything online from AJRICHIE. They have prices far below other "discount" stores. For example, they have a Nikon d7100 body for under 800.00. I know the saying about if it seems too good to be true, it probably is. I would like to know if anyone has any experience with this company. Thanks, from PhotoPhred
I have a d3100 and a d5100 and the nikon 70 to 300 af-s and it works fine on both camera bodies.
I have 2 Canon printers, a PIXMA pro 9000 that I bought few years ago and it prints up to 13 x 19 in. I just got a new PIXMA pro 100 this past December that also prints up to 13 x 19. I got it primarily for B and W prints as it has black, light grey and dark grey inks. Love them both, great quality print and the ink tanks are not too expensive from B+H. I use glossy, luster an matt style paper and everybody who has seen them loves the results.
I bought my wife a d3100 and she loves it. Easy to flog through the menu and takes great photos. I can print up to 13 x 19 and they look great. She has the Nikkor 18 to 300 lens. Good choice.
I agree with PhotoJoe. You can get the d5100 at a fairly reasonable price right now. Not too hard to use, lightweight. Check out rerurbs from B+H or Adorama. I would also recommend a descent lens. Maybe the 18 to 200. That should give you plenty to work with. Happy shopping.
This may sound stupid, but I had a similar problem and it turned out the battery was stone dead. Hope you can get it fixed and save your photos.
I bought the Nikon 18 to 300. My wife stole it for her d3100 and won't give it back. Does everything she wants in one lens. Have a great trip.
Thanks everybody. I learned something new today.
Thanks mdorn, that pretty much clears this up for me. It seems more important for video than stills. Thanks again.
Can someone please explain to me what the "class" number means. I see class 8 or 10 and I really have no idea what this means. Which one do you buy. The camera manual has recommendations, but I would love to know what the number means.

You can do pretty well with your budget. I am a Nikon user, but I have had a Canon also. Decide what kind of photos you want to take and if you have a good camera shop in your area, go handle the different models and see which feels "right " for you. There are a lot of folks here with a lot more knowledge than me who may also advise you on your choices. Happy hunting.
