Since the Nikon 3100 is old news there are some bargains out there.

As someone who is not familiar with DSLRs ,would a 3100 fit the needs of someone who hasn't used a camera in 20 years.

I would like to do some landscape and maybe some animal shots just for personal use and maybe brave posting one or two to the hog.

My budget is around 300 dollars and the 3100 is on sale for 299.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Sure would it is a great camera and probably will fit your needs, if you have a local camera store near you go there and see if they have any you can pick up to get a feel if not a 3200 is so close it works also when there pick up other brands to get the feel also and do not be afraid to ask questions

It's a great camera, I have it and a D5100, I don't leave home without them.

I use a D3100 frequently. Excellent entry level camera with great noise control up to ISO-3200. There's a ton of info in this review, but the summary is that a D3100 should be perfect for anyone who doesn't have a specific reason to use another model. http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/d3100.htm

Great camera for beginners. Maybe you can go to your local store to check.

I believe that you will be quite happy with a D3100. The 18-55 zoom kit lens ain't too shabby. Nikon chose one of my kit lens photos for European advertizement.

I am one of those that hadn't used a camera in 20 years and when I got back into photography and bought my first digital it was the D3100. I have been very happy with it and when I upgraded, I gave it to my son. He loves it and I still use it quite often as well. It takes some really fine pictures.

I helped two friends get the D3100 last year, both are very happy with it. One used it to take pictures at her son's wedding with excellent results. It should meet your current needs quite well.

I was in the same basic situation. Owned a Canon AT-1 with a 24 wide angle, 500 mirror and a couple of zooms. Didn't use it for years and finally gave it away. Recently tired of the point and shoot decided it was time to get back into serious photography. Picked up a D3100 before Christmas. Absolutely love it. Got the standard 18-55 and the 55-200. A great way to return to DSLR. Take a little time to experiment and just play with it. It will amaze you.

I bought one a couple years ago and I really like it. I also have a d5100 and my wife uses the 3100 now. If you can afford an 18 to 105 lens, or an 18 to 140, that will give you a little more "reach" and add to the experience. Great camera.

I've noticed the Nikon 3100 at Adorama for less $300 (18-55mm lens). Add a good portrait lens later (ie up to 85mm) but since this is a 'croped image' camera, 55mm should work for portraits till you can afford a LITTLE longer lens.

Sure. It's just as good now as it was when it was introduced. That $299 seems like a very good price. Is that the body alone? New? You can also get a refurbished body and lens combo.

I have used my 3100 for 3 years now and I love it.
I use it a lot. It goes with me to the beach at least
3 times a week. It's been very dependable and it's like
an old friend. I think you would be very happy with it.
