I'm looking to get my grandson a D3100 or D3200 dslr. I have a 70-300 lens that was on a D90. I tried it on my D7100 and it worked great. What I need to know is if someone knows if it will work on a 3100 or 3200. He had a D50 that fit but wouldn't operate it.

If it didn't work on the D50, it probably won't on the D3x00. The D90 an D7100 have a focus motor, the D50/D3x00 do not. Can you give us the exact specs on the 70-300mm nameplate? Specifically, does it say "AF" or "AF-S"? The AF-S is needed for the entry-level DSLRs.

Need more info on the 70-300. Is it a Nikon lens or ?? All wording on lens will be helpful but it sounds like the lens does not have it's own focus motor. If that's the case, it will NOT work on a D3100 or D3200.

It is a Nikon AF. It might be cheaper to get him a D3100 and a telephoto that will work with it. If I knew he was going to aspire with photography I would go to more expense. You never know with teens. Thanks for your help.

The D50 DOES have an AF drive motor in the body, the D40 and D60, as well as all D3XXX and D5XXX bodies do not have it. The Nikon AF 70-300mm will not AF on any of these bodies but will on the D50 and D90. Must be another issue with the D50.

The D50 came up with an error message EE.

That would probably have been "FEE", this message indicates that the aperture ring on the lens was not set to its smallest aperture (largest number). Put it back on the D50, set the lenses aperture ring to F22 and it will autofocus.
But it still will not autofocus on the D3100/3200 bodies.

Thank you so much for your help. I just finished downloading the manual on the D50.

My mistake, I forgot the D50 was different in this way.

I believe if you check it out you'll find that the Nikon D50 does have a focus motor (I still have two of them).

The difference is you have the "AF-S" version. The OP has the "AF" version, quite different.

If there is an aperture ring on that lens it has to be set for the smallest aperture, that is the largest number on the ring. Most lenses like that have a lock that holds the aperture to the smallest opening.
