Hi JacLee, well actually I was driving so I could not check out the sign any more than to take the picture! It was a lovely cool Florida winter day, and there were may patrons sitting outside enjoying the weather and what was in their glasses and bottles and wondering what this strange female was doing with her wierd looking camera with a filter taped to the end with bright green automotive masking tape (another story) bending down as much as possible with knees that are not working too well (another story) to photograph something they could not see as it was back in the foliage.................but who cares? You have to do what you need to do, and enjoy it, as I did!

Hello again Eric, I, and I am sure many others appreciate the time you are spending on this subject. Thank you so much.
Well, an update from Cocoa Florida. I decided to attach the big IR lens to my little UZI who fortunately has all of his moving parts inside. My husband and I taped very glamorous bright green automotive masking tape to the end of his 'snout' to the camera that is and not the husband! Yes it worked and the lens is now attached, I do not have to hand hold the lens but have amazing results hand holding the camera! I followed the advice you kindly gave me. I have been out each day and have taken many pictures of water and foliage, plenty of that here. But it was suggested buildings and I was ready for a change. Today I went out and I am attaching three pictures, again please for critique and comments. That little old UZI is amazing, sky noise, almost gone!
Thank you Eric

Wendy

Prepare to become addicted, I have probably taken close to 1500 pictures since I got my lens a couple of weeks ago, of course most of them have not made it past Photoshop but I am learning and loving it!

Good Morning Eric,
Well I did as you said, I took out UZI yesterday, handheld, (yes I was a non believer!) It was slightly breezy day, we went to a wildlife refuge on Merritt Island, Florida, we are fortunate to have foliage all year round, the palm fronds and mangroves seem to really respond to IR as do many other trees. I used the camera on the P setting only, (I will now make the changes you suggested that I read when I got home.)I now need to get a step up ring for this lens as I was hand holding it to the camera while shooting images. I may try masking tape today to hold it in place............? Anyway I am thrilled with the results. Thanks you so much. So here are some pictures. Comments, critique welcome.

Hello again Eric. I have been 'playing' with my UZI (Bless his old heart) but the weather has been overcast, not much contrast. Do you mind sharing the settings you set on your UZI? I can play with Photoshop but it does not 'pop' as i would like it to.
Again,
Thanks,
Wendy

WOW how exciting it was today! OK I got out old UZI put in new batteries and he was ready to go. It was late afternoon by the time I was able to go to work, here is what I did. I set him up on the tripod in my back yard. Took the filter off the Canon and held it against the lens and it fit snuggly over, of course not screwed on, I had to hold it. I could not hold camera, tripod and lens at one time, and press the shutter and work the controls. But what I got was amazing! No noise, the subject matter was not great but I promise I will post when I have worked on them. I could not believe my eyes. 2 mega pixels, what a camera. I also took a picture of the kid across the road as a test, I will give to his parents tomorrow, I had forgotten the quality of this camera. Being out of work I had considered selling it, but for some reason it never happened. Now I know the reason. Thanks so much Eric!
My very best wishes to you all for a wonderful Christmas.

Good Morning, Have found old UZI and he just sprung into life when I put the batteries in.
So now to order another filter. I have an extension lens that has a 52mm step up ring. Did you use the filter right onto the 49mm that has a thread?
Thanks,
Wendy,

Be forewarned, IR is so easy with the UZI, you may never go back to your Canon for IR.

Thanks Eric, I will have to dig out the UZI and fire him up again, hoping that after a few years of retirement this will work, but, just curious, why do you think this camera makes it easier. I do not have a steady hand or balance. But I am willing to try anything. I am just so happy to have a new challenge.
Regards,
Wendy.

Hi Eric, thanks for the reply. On studying how my camera works, things I have never really gone into in great depth - I have learned that on time exposure over 2 seconds it will automatically compensate for noise reduction. But now how to find out the exposure time on a subject that will not move or be blown in the breeze...................?

Thanks to all that replied, there are some great links, that I will study.
My big issue right now is noise, I know I have to find a way to set my camera up better (Canon Power Shot SX20is.)All of the images have it to a degree. I have heard I need a really long exposure time, right now the longest I have is one second.
But anyway I am excited about this forum!
I did create a bio - but I don't know where it is or how to find it - I also need time to explore the Ugly Hedgehog better!
