I was in the preserve in Boynton Beach, FL and this guy was taking a sunbath.
He is one of the biggest gators I have seen in my 10 years in Florida. He was about 25 feet from the place where I was standing.
They say the magic number is 15 feet. Any closer and you become a threat which means it might be lunchtime for the big guys.

i would carry a 5lb ham just in case you need to distract him from YOU
Great idea but it is illegal in Florida to feed disturb or entice gators in any way.
In other words, they can eat me but I can't eat them.
I wonder how fast a guy like that can move...probably faster than I can.
in case of a gator charging, you do not run fast as you can, you run fast as you have to, lol,,lord knows this old fat guy would be like a bolt of lightening and a streak of heat if that was after me!!!, LOL,,great shot,,I have been close to gators many times over the years,,but have always been in a boat,,made the hair on the back of my neck stand up ,,,keep shooting and sharing

a Game Warden told me that a gator can run 35 mph for short bursts
I'll have to time myself...just kidding...My 4 year old grandson is faster than I am.
This fella looks like he could stock an entire luggage store!

You don't have to be able to run faster then the alligator, you only need to run faster then the person that is standing next to you. ;-) :-)
I have seen them run, and I mean RUN. They can be faster then you might think, and they are quicker then they look.
But mostly in a straight line. I don't think they can zig zag too well.

I understand that all creatures on earth have a purpose. Can someone explain to me how alligators contribute to the plant, except for maybe swallowing a neighbor's dog who might anoy you with its barking. They often make the news after they have attacked or eaten someone or something. I just don't understand why they are protected. It can't be their good looks, IMHO.

oops. Meant to say the "planet", not the "plant"
Alligators get a bum rap because they are really timid and afraid of people. Once they are fed by humans they become aggressive and have to be put down.
One day I was in the preserve and I heard a noise close by. It was an alligator coming up the bank to cross the road and go to the swamp on the other side. He was just a few feet away. When he saw me he turned around and went back in the swamp. He moved like lightning.
There are over a million alligators in Florida and there are very few attacks.
As they say down here, they were here first.

I agree. I lived down in south Florida in the early seventies and loved to fish and hike in the "glades". I never had a problem with alligators. The mosquitos,
now that's another story 8-)
Why do we have gators ? I guess the checks and balances of nature dictate that gators clean up the messes and other water creatures that might over-populate.
I love bats cuz they love mosquitoes etc etc
