Dear colleagues,

I am interested in branching out to using more lighting in my photography of people. I have several books on lighting but am looking for a book or cheater cards that display lighting diagrams and corresponding effects of lighting on faces. I have searched the UHH and several sites but so far, no luck. And recommendations?

Best regards

I use a very small waterproof Fuji XP I use for backpacking. I have a solar charger and directly charge the battery in camera. It takes decent photos. The desire to use nicer equipment goes out the window after about 10 miles of carrying 40 or 50 lbs.

On a completely different topic..I also carry a Garmin In-Reach which is a text/GPS/SOS device. I cannot recommend it enough. It has helped me stay in contact with people back home during several emergencies...fires, etc. You want to spend money, spend it on this.

I carry my batteries in a Think Tank Battery envelope carrier which has a pocket for each battery. Batteries are marked 1 through X. If the terminals of the battery are down (inside the pouch part) the battery is freshly charged. If terminals are up...so I can see them...the battery has been used. At end of day remove the used batteries and recharge.

Hey, Mano...since you asked...the poles in the background are a distraction...tought when doing selfies since we dont always look behind us. But the point of photographs vary...in this case, you have, probably, a time in your life when you and your dad were happy together...so the poles are not that big a deal. If you were to display the photo then the poles are an issue.

I was confused too...and sometimes still get confused. IMO, the first thing to do is shoot for a year or so and THEN look back to see what it is you shot. For instance, I started shooting landscapes while on vacation or during a photo seminar, some family stuff, etc...but have developed a passion for shooting street scenes. I have gone on photo seminars where we shoot star trails (boring), or a led tour in a foreign location where the desire was to shoot landmarks...all without people in it! I want people in my shots and like people. So my point is that your style will evolve. THEN you will need the equipment to support your style. Looking for the exact right system now is like saying you like sports, buying a tennis racket only to find out that you like paddle ball...almost the same equipment, but not quite.

I now shoot M4/3 because of my style, my need for portability when hiking long distances, etc. So...maybe go with a cheaper canon (a used 60D or something would be great), share lenses with your girlfriend and see where you wind up?

People who recommend good glass are correct. I have made the sad mistake of getting a few so so lenses and regret doing so. Sometimes cheaper lenses are light weight (for hiking etc.) and do the job. But when details count, high quality glass is of upmost importance.

I think cameras are like guns. Take the right one for the job. But carry the biggest one you can. There are a lot of varied situations to consider. I just hiked in Peru over a pass that was 15,000 feet plus in altitude. I carried a m4/3 with one zoom and one prime. The IBIS allowed me to take 1/2 shots of streams without a tripod. Shedding ounces, much less pounds was vital.

Returned from Krakow a few months ago. I prefer to take shots of historical sites with people in them (possibly with some motion). I find most photos of sites with no people boring. There is ample opportunities to shoot the historical sites around Krakow including the castle. We toured the Jewish section of town including part of the town where the ghettos were created by the Nazis during WW2. Schindler's factory (on the site...and somewhat reproduced as I recall) interesting as well. The town square is alive with activity and ripe for street photography.

We did tour Auschwitz and Birkenau. My initial thought was to not even take a camera. I did finally take a camera and took several pictures that I think were done with proper decorum. Sadly, as someone else said, there were people taking selfies in very inappropriate places. (I think there is a photographer out there who takes photos of people doing such things...it is a sad commentary on the lack of scruples of people. ) I used an Oly EM5ii. Printed in a book in all black and white.

Equipment suggestions for a "shoot on the move" tour is a walk around lens, no tripod, be mindful that most places do not allow for a flash so also have a fast prime to shoot indoors. Poland is interesting not only because of the architecture, but because they are a people who (in relatively recent history) have been freed from repressive Communist rule. Other random thoughts...many of the young people speak English and are eager to practice. Uber worked quite well for us there.

Here's a few pics from the trip

A few random thoughts. I travel quite bit and gravitate towards photographing interesting people. I try to find out the customs of the locals in case they want a small amount of money for my taking photos. I NEVER take photos of homeless or people who are obviously in distress. I try to talk to my subjects and show them the photo I took. With regard to not taking a camera in bars, I disagree. In many places pubs are THE cultural focal point of the area. Once walking into a pub on an Irish island and found about 50 kids playing Irish flutes as part of a cultural event. One girl got coaxed into dancing. It was wonderful. I abandoned photos and took video which I almost never do.

I don’t like telephoto shooting. Usually shoot a wide prime.

People are friendly all over the world. Just talk to them.

My wife and I like to hike on our vacations. So, I use the Mindshift 180. Here is a link which will describe this unusual system far better than I could. https://www.mindshiftgear.com/products/rotation180-horizon.

Also, as an addition, I have some clips made by Op-Tech which allows me to fasten my camera to the front of my shoulder straps when I hike, thus attaching the camera to my pack but in ready position to shoot if I want to.

I think you are asking the wrong question. First, what do you intend to do with the camera? If you are an active person who envisions hiking or travel then you may want to consider a micro 4/3 system. Similarly if you intend to take photos from vacations and put them in a book there is little need to carry a large dslr. But if you intend to display photos larger than book size or want to go on photography expeditions you would be well served by a dslr such as canon or Nikon. I have canon and like the system. I also have Olympus m4/3 which is what I carry when treking. So before you ask what camera to buy you need to really figure out what it is you are going to do with the device.
