Nikon’s digital camera launch and press events have never been as good or exciting as Canon and Sony.

True, but during that period, you couldn't adjust you ISO (ASA) on the camera.. you shot Tri-X as ASA 400 but you could push it (unfortunately you had to push the entire roll and it was a processing decision). However, you did have the option to purchase and shoot with other grades of film with lower ISO/ASA numbers. Plus-X etc. I generally carried several rolls of film with varying grades and both negatives and slide film.. I also had a frigerator in the darkroom to store film in the freezer and also in the refrigerator part. I carried extra film in a cooler etc. Digital is so much easier... I can change ISO on the fly.. etc. Oh and I no longer have to drag an ice chest full of film. And yes, Tri-x was (generally) only good up to 8x10.. but was a favorite for news photographers because of it's speed (and rarely was a photo printed in a newspaper that was 8x10.
Now, I don't have to stock all of the different flavors of film... don't have a need for a darkroom (I have "Lightroom" and Photoshop on my computer, the wife's computer and 2 laptops) so my "darkroom" can travel with me. I no longer have to wait till I get home to make sure that my photos came out. I can look that afternoon or evening and see what (if any) I need to reshoot... Oh and I can look on the "live view" screen on the back of the camera also.

I have been all digital since 2001 when the Nikon D1X came out plus a Photoshop and After Effects user since the early 90s and I love it, but don’t you miss getting yours hands wet and working in the dark?

Is this the Rogue system with colored gels? Also, out Critical Health News .com, they claim to have cured people from macular degeneration.

While and i7 may outperform an i5 chip, what is more important than the processor for image editing is the video card and it's Open GL support, the amount of RAM available, and the much faster speed of an SSD card.

The video card is not as as important as the processor with Photoshop. It is with Premiere and After Effects. You can get the same performance in Photoshop with a slightly lesser video card.

I was wondering if any UHH members have used Nikon defocus control lenses. Nikon makes a 105mm f/2 DC and a 135mm f/2 DC lens. Someone in my camera club has the 105mm and let me shoot with it. It's awesome how the out-of-focus portions of the photo can be changed. You can change it from soft and creamy to more defined out-of-focus areas. I was thinking about possibly purchasing one. Do any UHH members have experience with them?

I have the 105 f2D DC and have been using it for portraits on on both crop sensor and full frame bodies, currently the D500, D850 and Sony A7s II. It’s a beautiful lens, built like a tank and very sharp, even wide open. You can get some nice effects from extra foreground and background blur to soft focus effect depending on the aperture and DC ring position.

The 135mm is the same quality but has a lot chromatic blooming when shot wide open.

I have a Nikon D810 camera and Nikon SB910 flash.

The manual for the Nikon SB 910, Basic Operations, Pg. B-11 instructs (1) Press the MODE button to highlight the flash mode. (2) Rotate the selector dial to display TTL/BL. (3) Press the OK button.

My problem: There is no TTL/BL when I rotate the selector dial. Has anyone else experienced this and, if so, how is it corrected?

Another question: When my SB 910 is on camera, my display on the flash is TTL/BL/FP. I am assuming it means Through The Lens/Balanced but what is FP and how would you use that setting? I cannot find anything in the manual which addresses this setting.

All I want to do is basic event photography with flash. Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

I get TTL/BL/FP and TTL/FP when I push the mode button and then rotate the dial or just push the mode button more than once. You get the FP when it is turned on in the camera’s menu. I am using the SB910 on a D850.

Do you have a new Tamron 24-70 G2 version for $700? Your post is a little confusing, you mention the G2 in the title, but talk about the G1 version.

I am very interested in getting a D850. I have a D610 but I am frustrated by the continuous auto focus to not capture the focus on birds in flight, motor sports and soccer more than 60-75% of the time. However, no one seems to have them in stock. Do you think the back log of orders will be gone by August? I want to shoot motor sports in September and would like to have the new camera by then. I am wondering if it is a Nikon production problem or a demand outstripping supply flow? Both?
Thanks

Service Camera in Baltimore seems to get them quick. I was planning on getting one in March so I got on their waiting list in January along with B&H, A week later Service Camera sent me an email saying they had a D850 for me. I purchased it and did some comparisons to my D810. The main things that stood out besides improved auto focus speed and file size was the greatly improved auto white balance, no more yellow/greenish cast, just clean neutral colors under any light source. I never liked the skin tones from past Nikons compared to Canon, but the D850 and D500 finally get it right.

The best place for sharing photos is the Gallery. If you have specific issues that you want to address, try Photo Analysis.

For feedback try the Photo Critique Section and/or For Your Consideration (click here then scroll down).

PS - These are all very good .

As I look at the photos, they are in the “Photo Gallery” section. What are you thinking?

I sold my Nikon 14-24 to buy the Tamron 15-30 and haven’t looked back. It is a little sharper on the edges than the Nikon.

I agree, and the Tamron does not vignette as much as the Nikon. Fast, silent, accurate AF, VC and it costs less. The Nikon was a great lens 5 years ago and still is a very good lens but there are better options now.

I need to repair my Nikon 14-24 2.8 Lens. I also see that Sigma has announced their new lense at $1,299. Aside from price, does anyone have any experience with the Sigma? Art are typically good lenses but I am Nikon guy and wonder if I should venture to Sigma Art.

You might want to check out the Tamron 15-30 2.8, lots of excellent reviews that show it has surpassed the Nikon, especially in the corners plus it has VC. I made the switch and have no regrets.

That head is intended for video, it will work for what you are using it for. Besides the vertical shooting problem without some kind of adapter, low cost video heads usually don’t lock down as solid as a still photo head.

If weight is mostly not an issue and you have a lower budget consideration, I like the Manfrotto #475b

I used the older version of the 475b (3035) for years, starting around 1984. Over the years it held my Hasselblad, Mamiya RZ pro II, Pentax 6x7, 4x5s and Nikons. The geard center colum is very strong on that tripod. I have even used it to hold up my old flip up garage door to change the springs. I now have the 58b for commercial work, it’s big and heavy but the automatic legs are awesome.

I had both lenses for a couple of months until I had an accident and the Nikon hit the ground giving it a super soft focus look. I did a direct comparison with them before the accident, trying to figure out which one to keep. With my copies I have to give sharpness edge to the Tamron, it performs better than I thought it would and the stabilization is better on the Tamron.

No, but I borrowed a 5DIII and IV and compared them to the Nikon D850. Very good results from the Canons but the D850 is a cleaner image with more neutral color and it really shows in copy work, makes printing easier. The Epson scanners are still better than all the cameras, especially when scanning film, more detail and consistent results. I get a lot of faded, scratched and just plain lousy images to scan, I guess they are important to someone. The models I am using are the 4870 Photo and the V800 photo. The image quality is basically the same from both scanners, the V800 does preview faster and holds 12 35mm slides vs 8 on the 4870. I like the film holders better on the 4870, and I use to use the Silverfast software but now I like the Epson professional better.
