Nikon SB 910

I have a Nikon D810 camera and Nikon SB910 flash.

The manual for the Nikon SB 910, Basic Operations, Pg. B-11 instructs (1) Press the MODE button to highlight the flash mode. (2) Rotate the selector dial to display TTL/BL. (3) Press the OK button.

My problem: There is no TTL/BL when I rotate the selector dial. Has anyone else experienced this and, if so, how is it corrected?

Another question: When my SB 910 is on camera, my display on the flash is TTL/BL/FP. I am assuming it means Through The Lens/Balanced but what is FP and how would you use that setting? I cannot find anything in the manual which addresses this setting.

All I want to do is basic event photography with flash. Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

I think you have to have it attached to the hot shoe of your camera for that to come up in the menu. It can't see through the lens or give you that option if it is not attached to the camera. Grandpaw

FP (Focal Plane) is a sync mode that let you synchronise flash with higher shutter speeds than the camera's normal maximum flash synchronisation shutter speed (often called “x-sync speed”).

I don't own the 910 but, did you check your in camera flash settings? It is possible it needs to be in ttlb also.

Yes, you have to have the flash attached to the camera, and the camera and flash both turned on, to see all the options. FP is a mode whereupon the flash will sync at all the higher shutter speeds. However, it does this by providing multiple flashes as the shutter fires, so it uses much more power to do so.

Thanks to everybody who responded. I do have my camera in my hot shoe and my in camera setting is on TTL; however, when I rotate the display dial TTL/BL is never an option. As it relates to TTL, the only selection is TTL/BL/FP and TTL/FP. I find it interesting that the flash manual specifically states to select TTL/BL but this does not show up on my flash monitor. I'd like to hear from owners of the Nikon SB 910 to see if they have this same issue and, if so, how they corrected it.

What did Nikon say when you called them?

Is your camera in spot metering mode? When in spot metering mode TTL-BL is disabled.

On page C1 of the SB-910 manual
Camera’s metering mode and i-TTL mode
• When the camera’s metering mode is changed to spot metering while i-TTL
balanced fill-flash is in use, the i-TTL mode automatically changes to the standard
i-TTL mode.
• The i-TTL mode automatically changes to i-TTL balanced fill-flash, after changing
the camera’s metering mode to matrix or center-weighted.

FP stands for high speed sync , the camera and flash combo will sync at any shutter speed all the way up to and including 1/8000 of a second , with the distance getting closer . If you stay in manual mode not , aperture, or shutter priorty. Choose single point auto focus . Make sure you stay on the center most auto focus point ,you can now focus in total darkness the flash will put out a infrared beam and camera and flash will will get perfect exposure in manual mode at really any shutter speed , I use 200 of a second f8 for depth of field you DO NOT NEED 2.8 lenses with this technique in low light situations

P.S the flash has to be set as slave with camera as master ..a lot of events are low light like dance floors at wedding receptions

I get TTL/BL/FP and TTL/FP when I push the mode button and then rotate the dial or just push the mode button more than once. You get the FP when it is turned on in the camera’s menu. I am using the SB910 on a D850.
