Please give us your opinions on Watson and Wasabi batteries. Which one do you prefer ?
Thank you.

I have and use Wasabi batteries in all of my cameras and they work great. I've never used any Watson batteries but I have heard they are also good.

I've been thinking of trying something new. I've used Photoshop Elements and Lightroom Classic but wonder what else is out there. Luminar Neo comes to mind but I've heard they have problems with printing.

Luminar Neo with their new individual add-on modules sold separately get to be an expensive way to go. There is as good or better software available for less. I'd suggest looking into "ON1 Photo RAW" or for a more Photoshop look and feel, "Affinity Photo". Either or both I feel are better options.

These two images are reprocessed using On1's Denoise/sharpen AI tool. These are redone jpegs. The software is actually set up to do RAW files. I think it did a good job, regardless. I could have posted the originals but I got lazy.

Thanks guys for all the advise. I think I will look into this Affinity program. And I like what Bill_de said "enjoy my new freedom from work photography" and I WILL get back to the fun part of it. Happy holidays to everyone!

My wife and I gave up the wedding business, so my photography is now down to a couple of jobs a year, if that, for friends. I would like to find a good simple editing program for the least amount of money. I gave up Photoshop and Lightroom. Any suggestions?

Affinity Photo, ON1 Photo RAW or Photoshop Elements (and "Elements+" add-on).

Hi friends....I am sure this topic has been covered To Death, and for this I apologize. I have a little Nikon D3300 which I LOVE. It's simple and easy and I never have to think as I use it. Alas, it's getting a bit worn as I have almost used it to death. I am in the market for an upgraded body, but as I have quite a few lenses that I use a lot, I still want the F-mount and whatever else the specs are with the D3300. I am retired, NOT professional and just take photos to please myself.....mostly macro, landscape and family stuff. What would you all recommend as a logical step up? I'd like to not outgrow it, yet have it a bit more sophisticated than my little D3300. Thanks for sharing your wisdom and experience! Rita

I would suggest a D500, D7200 or D7500. If it is within your budget go for the D500, it is the top of the line cropped sensor Nikon DSLR.

Anyone remember Photolemur 3 ?

Yea, I bought it. It was OK for a quick look into improving an image providing it didn't need any real editing. Then Skylum bought them out for the AI and they ended up giving Photolemur 3 away for free.

This sequence I know for sure. Luminar 4, Luminar AI, Luminar Neo. I don't think HDR is part of that chain.

I know for Windows it was Luminar 2018, Luminars 3, Luminar Flex, Luminar 4, Luminar AI and then Luminar Neo. There have been lots of problems with with all of them.

Wondering after reading some of Steve Perry's ebook on BIF whether I need a mirrorless body.

Can I get by with a new/used D850 if I do not shoot much BIF?

How much better will my other animals show up with a new Z9? I understand eye detection is great but with bison, lions, etc finding and keeping the eye in focus is really not that difficult.

I guess what I am asking : is going to a mirrorless body going to make a $4000+ difference? Since my wife and I use Nikon bodies I am guessing that a Z9 for me would save me money as I can use my old lenses. I had thought about moving to Sony a1 and their 200-600. But then all my other lenses and bodies would just sit around.

If you want a mirrorless camera buy one but you don't need one to shoot birds in flight.

I've successfully used a D3100, D7100, D7200 and a D500 for shooting bif.

This is a naive question BUT I’ve been trying to understand the uses of the Exposure Compensation (EC) dial on cameras. I understand the basics that rotating the EC dial to β€œ+” increase light for exposure and rotating the dial to β€œ-β€œ decreases light. But other exposure factors get modified when you do this (reduce shutter speed for β€œ+” and increase for β€œ-β€œ). Can’t you simply make these manual settings when you want a specific effect? I guess the advantage of the EC dial is that it facilitates adjustments to exposure for a particular effect (darker/lighter exposure). But I think that mirrorless cameras with Electronic View Finders are the ones that mostly benefit from this technology. All comments are welcomed to enlighten a very aging amateur photographer and dedicated Hog follower.

Wjen not in (M) Manual mode, the exposure compensation is an over-ride to the exposure. If you leave it turned on in each shot the camera will come up with what it feels should be the correct exposure and then the compensation will over-ride that setting based on the compensation you set up.

How deep are your pockets? If you have the money I'd go with the Z9.

I am not trying to judge. I am just wondering what percentage of photographers use pp as opposed to SOOC. I just look at photos and I try to replicate the quality and I have difficulty getting that quality. Again, not trying to judge one way or the other.

If you shoot in RAW, which you should if you want the best pictures you can get, you need to post process for the best results. If you are shooting in JPG you are still getting a processed photo, processed in and by your camera. You should always try to get the best exposure that you can, in camera. But even the best exposure still needs post processing to be the best it can be.

My self, I say always shoot in "RAW" or if you feel you really need the JPG, shoot in "RAW + JPG".

After launching ON1 2023, the company is offering a "Bundle," on sale for $79. Have you noticed that there is always something new to buy? Nothing in the bundle below attracts me, but it might be good for someone. The trend seems to be to offer a new program and then offer more features for it at additional cost. It's like buying a car and then deciding if you want wipers and mirrors and a heater.

Bundle Includes:

ON1 Effects 2023 – add the perfect finishing touch with AI Adaptive Presets and stackable filters
ON1 Resize AI 2023 – upscale your photos up to 700% with incredible sharpness and detail
ON1 NoNoise AI 2023 – remove all the noise from high-ISO images and sharpen with Tack Sharp AI
ON1 Portrait AI 2023 – automatically retouch skin, eyes, and mouth
ON1 HDR 2023 – create flawless HDR photos from a single photo or multiple exposures

I believe this has been done the same for the last year or two at least. These 5 are the plug-ins for people that use ON1 as a plug-in rather than as complete stand-alone program. In using ON1 as a stand-alone, you have all of the modules available so you don't need the separate plug-ins.

For people that use a different program and use ON1 as a plug-in, they don't need the complete program. Also with the plug-ins they can just buy the specific plug-ins that they need/want.

I don't think anyone is being cheated or anything.

I see this question so many times: My answer is I don't :
I use the K.I.S.S method:
1: Make a folder /subject/date/location on the desktop (My System is an iMac, worked the same on Windows)
2: Insert CF/ SD card into reader, open files and drag into desktop Folder.
3: Remove card and reformat in camera,( After checking to be sure the files transferred)
Images are now on the computer!
4:View images in Bridge or Adobe Camera RAW, Edit and save in same folder.
5:When finished editing and posting, drag folder into three external HD's, Nothing is saved on my C: drive.
When I need to find an image I turn on the external drives locate my image/s, do whatever and turn drives off.
This has been working for me for 20+ years, I have never lost photos due to a glitch or hitting a wrong key
When I change computers All my files are still where I left them.
Now I am not saying this is the only way. I know its not good for Professional Photographers or businesses.
But It is simple!!!

I create a folder for the pictures then use a card reader to copy/move the pictures into the folder I created using File Explorer in Windows.
