How do you lock and unlock?

By the little switch, it goes up and down, down locks the wheel in place.

It was mine. Used it with a D70 and D200 until I bought my VR of the same size. Never had a problem with it and never had to do anything special.

I'm going to head up to a camera shop next week. Will see what they can do, I need a new camera bag anyway.

Thank you so much Graveman, very interesting comment. I have two other post, one of a male and one of a female if you would like to see them. The female appears not to have a tail. And if you could use any of these pics, feel free to do so. I would love to read your article.

Loved the pics I might go ahead and steal them for one of my nature classes this summer. I'll send you the article as soon as I figure out how to attach it to a PM.

Love this, great shot. I do a nature column for a local paper. One of my upcoming ones is about woodpeckers, of which Flickers are a member. Flickers have the longest tongue of this family, up to two inches beyond the bill.

That minimum aperture thing can be a nuisance. I recently put my 35-70mm on my D610, and I got an EE error message. It took me a while to realize I had to set the aperture back to F/22. There is a little locking switch I had to move. Do you have a locking switch like that on your lens? Maybe it's the position of the switch that's confusing the camera and lens.

I've tried that also, the numbers on the dial go 32,22,16,11,8,5.6 & 4. The only one that will lock is 32. Thanks

Next step would be to try it on another D3000 series or D5000 series camera, if it does not work there then the lens may have a connection problem.

Might even be worth going to a camera store with lens in hand and see what they can tell you.

That's my next step, a 45 mile trip. (That's what I get for living in the sticks)

Lock it on f/32, connect to camera while camera is OFF, turn on camera, go to manual mode.

See if that makes a difference. It is a MANUAL focus lens on a D3100 also.

Nope

As to workingon other bodies, I haven't found anyone around here that uses these types of cameras....yet.

is the lens actually set to f 32 before the camera is turned on?

The difference in points is because the older lenses , the AF-D do not have a focus motor in them, so the D3100 will not autofocus with them .

A DX camera, (D3100) can use an FX lens fine, but if the lens has no focus motor (AF-S) then focusing will be manual only.

Aperture setting will also not be communicated to a D3100 because there is no pin on the lens chip. Instead it uses what is known as an aperture index tab - and a D3100 has no aperture index ring to connect with the tab and tell the camera what the aperture is.

If you lock the aperture on the lens to its smallest setting, and thats F/22 or f/32 most likely, then the lens should not display an error message, but work on the camera with manual focusing - auto ISO will function as will shutter priority mode.

The part about an "un-authorized" card - well, she may have meant UN-TESTED card, Nikon tests several cards, and thats all they list.

I use untested by Nikon cards in my D7100 and have had no errors like you are seeing. Currently I am using a Samsung Pro & a Transcend card and have several cheap unnamed cards as spares that all work without error.
The difference in points is because the older lens... (show quote)

No her words were un-authorized. I did put the camera on manual, but no luck there.
