I use a monopod with a RRS head all the time. When I walk in the Everglades the monopod doubles as a walking stick and a prob to see how deep the water is along my path. I use two a carbon one and a new Surui that has feet you are able to deploy.

I have been on SSI for 7 years. It is a supplement for the retirement I earned through 35 years at work and the small amount I put into a tax shelter for 30 years. I do not believe SSI was supposed to be all you needed in retirement. I think it was designed as a supplement to ones regular savings. However, you probably know that many people on SS receive a minimum because of various governmentally-backed and/or entitlement programs (the public dole, oops, did I say that?). If SS was only paid to those who paid into the system, there would probably be plenty for all who worked and have reached the required age. If you participated in the SS system, you, the one who worked, is entitled to the money you invested in the system. If you didn't pay into the system for the required quarters, you should get nothing... like politicians (oops, did I say that?).

If you wore a sombrero and clashed with another sombrero wearer, disputes would be settled over a couple of mojitos.

If the sombrero was of an adequate size, you could sell advertising on it together with the website url.

How much did you save over a USA Nikon D810? I bought an 810 from a Nikon dealer and have been very happy with the camera.

Guys,

Nikon and Canon are both good brands. I shoot (Nikon myself) with a Canon friend and we both enjoy the shoots. Sometimes we have various situations were my D4s and 500VR is a better combination. When that happens and my good buddy wants to try my set-up, what do I say? What any self-respecting Nikon guy would say to his best friend Canon shooter - get lost pal!

Use B&H, Roberts, ePhotocraft, Hunts, Adorama, or Pitman. TRY to avoid 42 and the myriad other scammers.

Gray market typically means the item was brought to this country by an entity other than the original manufacturer. In this case lets say Nikon.

Now, if I am on a trip to South Africa and I really need a different lens, I would like to be able to stop in a Nikon store and buy a Nikon lens to use on my trip. If I then return to the USA and happen to need service, I would expect that such service would be rendered under a Nikon warranty. I did everything in good faith and would expect the same from Nikon.

True or Untrue?

The other day I was walking upstairs and my wife called to me. After I answered her I stopped for a moment. My wife looked at me and asked why I was not moving. I had forgotten if I was on my way up or down and had totally forgotten what I was on my way to do. Hmm...

After a discussion of camera mechanics as others have stated above...

Have the students look at what they want to photograph, then look through the camera lens. Let your eye "take a walk around" the image. Ask yourself if you are about to capture what you first observed.

Shoot it

Not too long ago I took a photography class. We studied light, depth of field, backgrounds, and composition. The course was very good and gave me a sense of composition and helped me with the ability to capture what I saw.

After some trial and error, I showed some of my prints to others and was well received. Then, to my amazement, I looked at some of the other student's prints. WOW!

The colors were amazing - brilliant reds, golden yellows, emerald greens, metallic golds and vibrant blues. I said WOW again, where did you get those shots? What filters did you use? What time of day did you get that light? How long did you have to sit out in the cold to get that winter scene?

An Epiphany followed...

Then I was informed that in the next class you will learn how to photoshop anything you want into your photo. You will learn how to combine bits and pieces of digital images (even using online photo collections) and colorize them into GREAT pictures.

What! You mean you didn't have to sit out in the cold for the winter scene? That ocean shot was pasted together? That models eyes were really not the blue? What, you really didn't shoot the fall leaves scene at one time? I was truly amazed!

A young fellow told me I will spend more time at my computer than shooting and the next class will show me how.

In the final analysis I like my "natural" shots much better as they represent what I saw at a moment in time. I like trekking through the woods seeking some interesting area to photograph. I like crawling through a field stalking a group of Sand Hill cranes. I enjoy capturing a bird of prey at work. I am fascinated by waves crashing against a rocky coast. I enjoy shooting birds in flight. A macro shot of a butterfly is a beautiful thing.

Oh my goodness no matter how many shots I shoot in a natural setting I find every one a little different.

I would rather capture a moment in time, as it happened, and produce a print saving the experience than create a shot on my computer. (Faux-photography I guess would be a good term.)

Over the years I have sold a number of prints and almost every buyer has asked how did you get that shot, where was it taken, what camera/lens did you use, and the best is, "I would love to go to that place and take some pictures myself." My answers usually contain a geographic path. What is a PS photographer's answer...Oh, I first shot a scene then I found another part of the picture on my friends computer then I applied some color and sharpening and then and then I.....

In summary, I am not a graphic/artist/photographer, but rather, just a guy out taking pictures of life as it is. (I guess I would call myself a "natural photographer.")

Nice Greyhounds. I used to have a yard full of them.

On filters: If I am using a filter to enhance a shot, I only use Singh-Ray. They are quality. Otherwise I only use a filter as protection when I am traveling. I always wondered why you buy a lens for X dollars then put the cheapest filter on the front of the lens. I have always wonder about the quality of filters.

I took a bunch of filters to my eye doctor and we looked at the filters through his equipment. Some were real junk full of inconsistencies in the glass. To make a long story short The Singh-Ray scoped out the best.

I am not saying they are the best available. They are just a quality filter.

IMO, Dale
