As an Ansel Adams fan you must realize that he enhanced his photos greatly in the darkroom. Between his darkroom manipulation and using sky filters to artificially darken skies, his photos don't look like the actual scene. I heard of someone once who knew Yosemite from his photos, and was disappointed when he actually visited there that it didn't look as spectacular as it did in his photos.

Ansel said about his photographs, to reflect what was seen and felt. For me photographs are a separate reality connected to the original event by photons that are rendered to a medium. We don't have a tree, but silver or pigments on paper (or what have you) from the photons and it is up to us personally to decide what to do with the information. Ansel and some of his friends from the group f/64 broke with popular trends in photography at the time and pursued images that were in sharp focus. Today we also have trends which tend to be wide focus views with saturated colors. Not my cup of tea as often the scenes may change but the look is the same and I'm not referring to a thread connecting images together. In the end it's a personal choice for processing (many choices) with photography and "how" we make a photograph and what matters is what is seen in the frame.

I have two and they are coast to coast. British Columbia and Newfoundland, Canada. I give the nod to Newfoundland.

What has been your paradise, so far?

Nice landscapes. I like them a lot.

Agree, but aren't they seascapes?

I forgot to say, rescue dog is the best! We all need second (or more) chances and millions of dogs are killed because it's easier than deal with the problem.

Any suggestions based on your experience?

German Shepard's are loyal, intelligent, protective, and don't roam. When I'm out to make images he listens and don't have to worry about him getting into trouble of messing up my pictures.

I have both electric snow blower and pressure washer. They start every time and perform well. Only obvious downside is the need for 500โ€™ (๐Ÿ˜) power cord.

What about running over the cord with a snowblower?

I've read that with the proper paper and the proper ink and the proper treatment prints can be made to last 200 years. What's the point? Just wondering and a bit bemused. If we're searching for immortality, just put them in the Cloud and call it good. At least until it gets real dry up there.

The point is to make prints that may last beyond us. As for the cloud and mortality, I wouldn't hold my breath. No digital storage at this point in time can be expected to last 200 years. 18 years maybe on the longer end of things for storage of any kind. See government digitized information in the mid 70's and by 2000 none of the information was assessable due to hardware/software/ knowledge issues. The digital age waits for no one and backward compatibility is a problem, as OS and hardware progress content is no longer compatible. In the past we have pictures handed down in families and I fear the digital age will no longer be able to deal with images from 50 years, let alone 200. Trust in God, but print your images. On the plus side, working on images to get something you are proud of!

I was alway envious of the Hasselblad folks....saw their ultra sharp photos and enlargements..envious!
I bought a Kowa 66...way less expensive, but reviews said the optics were excellent.
Thought it would be a burden to carry around, but surprisingly, that size camera is so close to the SLR 35s that
I never felt burdened. Took some nice photos...because it seemed like a special camera to me, I seemed to be
a better photographer with it. The logical progression would be a Hasselblad instead of the large Canon DSLR I
have now....but I've been unable to pull the $$ trigger. I think the same thing has happened to the folks on this
site...I never see words about medium format challenges/problems/triumphs. Is it because of cost..hard to
believe because many of you have released a list of your lenses in present ownership...and you have lots of $$$ involved..
Is it because of the idea that that format is just too large to handle? Is it because of the lack of innumerable
control features that the DSLRs have? Is it because this site devoted to 35mm? Someone needs to post some
nice medium format photos....maybe even comparisons of the same scenes...I for one would love to see
if there is still a difference...and how much the difference is...Thanks...

I have 2 Hasselblad bodies, 201F and 500CM and the Zeiss leans are awesome and can be had very inexpensively. What I enjoy is the
simplicity and can do very long time exposure and no noise!

Or shoot 8x10 for a lot less and not need to make 4 exposures.

I don't think you need a gray card for the Zone system.

18% grey card for reference is central to establish print values and metering.

I saw a "Used" (of course) - S.E.I. on E-bay for sale a few weeks ago. The one I had was given to me by one of my "mentors" that I worked for in the late 1960's.

I still have a Lunapro with 7.5 spot attachment I bought in the early 70's, still works.

This thread assumes a familiarity with the Zone System promulgated by Ansel Adams and his crowd. There is no doubt that Adams identified an outstanding way to parse the light data in a shot so that he could make informed decisions about how to expose a shot.

To take advantage of the Zone System, what tool(s) do you use?
- built in spot meter
- separate dedicated spot meter
- combination spot & incidence meter
- SLR spot meter to meter for a camera without a meter
- something else

If you use a separate spot meter, do you have it calculate the EVs or do you have it present exposure data (shutter & aperture)? I am very much interested in how yโ€™all are addressing the Zone System.

The meter depends on the camera that is used and situation at hand. For instance with large format, I'd use a reflected spot meter or in the case of Sinar, spot film plane readings. I don't like to rely on incidence readings as the measure the amount light falling on a subject, not reflecting from the subject, but any port in a storm! More important than what meter used is how it's used and the idea is to determine readings from important shadow and highlights in the image in relation to an established level by calibrating camera/system. A good book, the Zone System Manual by Minor White is the clearest writing on the subject in my opinion and get you up and running if you do the homework.

My prayers(sincerely) go out to you, on your second 'go-round' with your cancer. It's been three years, with my battle with esophageal cancer, and
'they' say they got it all- BUT I continue to have 'major' complications from the operation. And, if that's not enough 'on-my-plate'~ I have been diagnosed with advance CAD (which has really put a physical damper) on my photographic activities. Yes, indeed... Yes Dave we are blessed and fortunate to have another chance! It isn't what we don't have but what we do have that matters. Thanks for the prayers and thoughts, I send Light and Love to you. Be well Larry

Why do you guys always misinterpret what a guy says. I do not want anyone in pain but I also do not want people killed in an automobile accident from a person who is high. Now you are going to tell me they do not get high and I will believe that like people are not kill by texting on their cell phones and not only are they killed but they kill others. Personally I am in pain all of the time with a bad back but my pain might not be as bad as yours but it may be worse. Pain is subjective. And some can tolerate pain more than others. There are others and other people lives that need to be considered. BTW what about those people that want to get rich off of your pain. If they cared they would grow the marijuana and give it to you for free or only productions costs. Being innocent and killed sucks also.

Ban texting or using phones while driving, don't deny me relief because of what others might do. Pain and suffering is just that, but ymv...what about others getting rich, they don't concern me, I'll do what I have to! Typical, wanting to deny someone something because of what the weak links do, screw them!
