I'm amazed at the negative comments about the legalization of marijuana in California. Abuse of alcohol causes violence and traffic deaths, yet it has no benefits. People who drive while high can also cause traffic deaths, but pot has proven medical benefits. Consider the millions of dollars wasted by law enforcement pursuing pot users. Among of the supporters of pot laws is the for-profit prison industry and the politicians who support it. It's to the benefit of both of them to get as many people as possible into prison, so decliminalizing pot is going to hurt them financially.

Alot of good points Jerry. Alcohol causes so much damage, yet it is legal and readily available everywhere. Not much benifit to society there. I think adults should be able to do in their own home whatever they want to do to relax. And they have already proven it helps people with Parkinson's disease, seizures, cancer treatments, ect. It is fear, and like you said, the big pharma, prisons, and our government that is keeping it illegal.

Drunks usually just run 'STOP' signs...Potheads just sit there and wait for STOP sign to turn green.

16% increase in pregnant women using Marijuana, LOL, supposedly to relieve nausea, again, LOL....like alcohol it has major consequences for the baby and society. Besides, adding annother drug to the mix just makes sense, correct?

They should legalize pot and make alcohol illegal.

That is a large part of the point in Jesse Ventura's book: Marijuana Manifesto. It is a very interesting read.

One has to be careful in watching how people use statistics (always!). Recently there have been reports of pot causing more fatal accidents in Colorado. However, what the studies have shown is that more drivers involved in fatal Colorado accidents than in the past have marijuana in their bloodstream. That is not surprising, since it may be detected for weeks after use - long after any impairment has worn off. The often-missed fact is that Colorado has seen a decline in fatal accidents. So - there is no cause and effect indicated by the information being touted.

My concern with recreational marijuana as opposed to alcohol, though, is that people use marijuana to get stoned, whereas many people such as myself do not use alcohol to get drunk - a glass of wine with dinner for example.

We tried the alcohol ban back in the 1920s. Does anyone remember how well it went?

Thanks SB, totally agree with your last paragraph. And agree with the statistical approach, lies, damn lies & statistics. However studies prove that THC inhalers work far better than an actual joint when used for medicinal purposes. And as for the numbers, more and more pregnant women are smoking pot, not good, in fact sad. And as for Jesse, not sure whenever Jesse's Marijuana soaked brain ever met reality. ☺☺☺

The problem to society with pot is that there is no field test(like a breathalizer for alcohol) to determine whether a driver is impaired and shouldn't be on the road. Only a blood test can do that so the driver would have to be arrested first.

A State that legalizes Pot also gets a special rating from the car insurance companies because of an increase in traffic accidents involving Pot use . The Leftist screwball Governor elect in NJ promises to legalize Pot when he takes office .
Just what we need here where car insurance policies are $1,200 & up per year . His justification is to raise money through its taxation to pay for his screwball ideas , including making NJ a Sanctuary State . Law enforcement is delighted to have this idiot to take office in a few weeks .
And he promises to raise property taxes even more !
Who elected this fool ?

From what I recall, it resulted in a lot of excitement.

Pot, alcohol, nicotine, steroids, caffeine, sleep aids, prozac, anti-depressants, saccharrine, diet pills...heap them on! We need all this junk to help the next generation to be more normal than us...

Would they raise the rates just assuming there would be an increase in accidents, or are they using it as an excuse to make more money? Did they raise rates when cell phones and texting became popular, too? I think they should raise the rates for people who have accidents and cause the companies to pay out, rather than raising rates for everyone. I wonder if they lower the rates for dry counties, where drinking is not allowed.

You opened up the "can of worms" , Jerry! This should get very interesting...............I agree that distracted driving is a huge problem and should be addressed more thoroughly.

Yes, a can of worms!

I wonder who is going to be the first Pot Head to abuse the new law here in California for getting arrested for Stoned or Impaired Driving? We've had MADD for a long time. Will we need MASD too? I wonder how the insurance industry is going to react to this new issue on the road. Similarly, we'd have to re-write Tort Law before we can have truly autonomous vehicles. Who would you sue, the software engineer, car manufacturer, traffic engineer?
