500 f4 AFS VR II. Been lusting after this lens and finally found one in the condition and price that appealed to me.

I had a manual focus version years ago and it was awesome for small birds but the manual focus was a hindrance. Missed a lot of shots.

Correction: 500 f4 D AFS II.

Looking at Craigslist, I've found a Canon 70d with a Canon 24-85 lens which the person will sell for $550. I also found a Nikon d7100, body only, in which the person will sell for $500.

Other factors: I mainly shoot my son playing soccer (high school and club), family, and on occasion landscape. I currently own a Canon T3i with 2 kit lenses I bought used (18-55 and 55-250), so I'm not tied to my current Canon lenses.

Which do you feel is the better value, taking into account prices for each?
Thank you for any thoughts you might have.

Since you already have Canon gear it would make more sense to stick with it.

This Reddish Egret was a joy to watch, never seen anything like it.
He was running through the water, trying to catch fish.

He would totally dive under, then emerge and shaking himself, and repeat the whole thing again.

I took those images on a cloudy day at my favorite Wildlife Dr. The best part was nobody else was around, gave me lots of space.

What a character.

This GBH was very patient with me, allowing me to get a full frame shot with a 1DX, 600mm +1.4x =840mm. 1/500, f6.3, ISO 400.

For those of you who live in California, the Salton Sea is in danger. A few years back, from what I understand, water rights in the area were sold to San Diego, meaning in 2017, the water that sustains with inland sea will no longer be available, but rather, will go to San Diego. End result, the Salton Sea will dry up, turning into a dust bowl, similar to what happened in Owens Valley. Although the Sonny Bono wildlife refuge will continue, the lack of water in the sea itself will mean that many of the birds that rely on this resource will have to find another place to live. Although the sea was created by mistake, its going to be a sad state of affairs when it dries up. I feel sorry for the people living down wind.

Thanks for looking.

Now retired, I've taken up photography as another interest. I've been learning and practicing as I go. Last week I took these bird shots. They may not be the best, but I was excited enough to post them. I'd welcome any comments or feedback. Thanks!

A very good effort.

It was nap time this afternoon in the owl woods I guess. The first one is the male, then the female. Then the female woke up and started preening. Cool.
