Looking at Craigslist, I've found a Canon 70d with a Canon 24-85 lens which the person will sell for $550. I also found a Nikon d7100, body only, in which the person will sell for $500.
Other factors: I mainly shoot my son playing soccer (high school and club), family, and on occasion landscape. I currently own a Canon T3i with 2 kit lenses I bought used (18-55 and 55-250), so I'm not tied to my current Canon lenses.
Which do you feel is the better value, taking into account prices for each?
Thank you for any thoughts you might have.
Personally, I would opt for a refub'd unit rather than someone on Craigslist. Just say'n
A refurbed Nikon d7100 is around $550 on Adorama, if I am remembering correctly. Warranty would be good to have. Good point.

Unfortunately, now a days, I would agree...
Actually, I prefer Craigs list over Ebay..I purchased a beautiful Sony/Zeiss lens from a local individual. We met in a bank, I brought my camera body, I tried out the lens, and struck a great deal. Well below Ebay price (sellers on Ebay incur a 10% fee so many are willing to sell below Ebay customary pricing.) Ebay doesn't allow you to try it out first either!
As for your question, I have a 70D and love the camera. And since you are familiar with Canon already, I would go ahead with the plan over Nikon. The full frame 24-85 is sharp with distortion. I have used the 55-250 for many sports and birding photos and enjoy its light weight and excellent optics.
I'd get a shutter count on each of them first from the sellers. Totally check them out. Hold them, take a few pics, check focus and buttons.
I'm a Nikon enthusiast so I'd go with the D7100, but Canon makes good cameras too. (Don't let S.S. know I said that!) LOL!
Good call on the shutter counts.
The Nikon is Two generations behind, the Canon only one!! ;-)

No worries, I'm looking the other way!!!!!

If the Canon is in good condition I'd think it would be the logical choice since both lenses for the Rebel will fit it.

Since you already have Canon gear it would make more sense to stick with it.
what you already have is seems to cover your needs. if you must upgrade, get a better used lens.

The Pros seem to prefer Canon for sports action type shots.
There could be quite some risk purchasing from Craigslist - I don't know what security they have.
