With IBIS are tripods still necessary? Especially when using a smaller, lighter lens like a prime? I understand that with some types of photography (and lenses) tripods are needed, but has IBIS made them redundant in others?

Sounds like another clickbait title of a Tony Northrup video.

In short: no, a tripod isn't necessary for a snapshot. But get serious and yes, a tripod is needed.

I often focus stack to get ultra-close foreground without the diffraction of a tight aperture, and I sometimes use a portrait-length lens for landscapes, shooting several frames to stitch into a pano. Let's see, four or five sets for a pano plus three or four frames each for focus stacking. Try that handheld.

I have spectrum Internet only and pay $35 a month. I have had no problems with them.

How long have you had Spectrum? That low monthly rate of $35 sounds like the 12-month introductory rate. I paid $30/month for a year, but it's now gone up to the normal $70/month. I have internet only, no TV or phone plan with Spectrum.

Spectrum is reliable and consistently fast, at least around here. It's clearly the best option for us.

Jerry, I've also heard that T-Mobile offers home internet for those with its phone plan.

Send a silver dollar to Andreas also.

I thought about posting this but didn't want to spoil the fun yet: https://www.sonyalpharumors.com/some-fun-sony-just-developed-a-new-4000mm-f-0-3-full-frame-e-mount-lens/

Andrea gets playful sometimes.

Will the lens mount support it? Or does it need a tripod collar?

Whenever the Sony Empire decides it wants to try something completely out of it's realm of operations and invade another company's area of expertise they enter the world of unknown and selling it as new, improved, and worthless this is what the consumer gets!

Sure, kind of like Sony entering the camera market and leading the transition to mirrorless that everyone followed. That was pretty worthless, wasn't it?

I thought it would be easy to change the name of the network. It isn't. With Win10 Home, I have to edit the registry. The first direction is to back up the registry. Naturally, following the directions brought me to a dead end. I'll try this later, when I get home.

Seems I recall reading that you have Spectrum internet. If so, use the mobile app to manage your account and devices. You should be able to change the name with very little effort. I use the app to manage usage of my kids and their friends, pausing internet access and restoring it with a few taps on my phone. I haven't changed the network name yet, but I've toyed with a few clever names I've heard of. FBI Surveillance Van is one on my short list.

Great set but I wish you had labeled them

The first two are from Death Valley: Zabriskie Point and Mesquite Dunes. Next is Zion, from Canyon Overlook I think. And the last is Bryce, from one of the visitor parking lots -- same place I shot my avatar, looks like.

A few weeks ago I had time for a short trip out West and spent a day in each of the above national parks hiking. All 3 were so beautiful, each in their own way. All told, I hiked 36 miles in those 3 days and put about 1000 miles on the rental car. I also was fortunate enough to get chosen for a permit to hike Angels Landing in Zion, which was terrifying.

Very nice, especially the Bryce shot. I've been to all three of these parks a number of times (my avatar is a shot from Bryce I took in 2011).

Whirlwind tours can be fun, but I prefer spending a few days in one location to see more than can be seen in a single day. On the other hand, I once got off I-90 in Indiana and drove a few miles north to cross into Michigan, and then I turned around and got back on the interstate to continue east, just to check off Michigan on my list of states I've visited -- which is 38 and counting, but it would have been 37 otherwise.

In my defense, I was around 2,000 miles into a 7,000-mile road trip, so I wasn't going to miss that chance. And I turned around in a Walmart parking lot where I spotted an Amish horse-drawn carriage, the only one I've ever seen, even though I traversed states better known for Amish populations.

The Zeiss ZX-1 has an android OS and doesnt seem to be all that great of a camera. Wonder if given the Sony relationship this was a sandbagged version of something great.

Around ten years ago, Samsung had three Android-based cameras: two point & shoots, the Galaxy and Galaxy 2; and an APS-C interchangeable-lens mirrorless, the Galaxy NX. I remember the latter from an article, probably on PetaPixel, but that's about all I know.

Neither Samsung nor Zeiss is known for making cameras and neither stayed with cameras long, so I wouldn't consider the failure of these cameras an indictment against the idea of using an Android OS in a camera. I like the idea, mostly for the reasons Tony talks about.

That depends on how their software is organized right now. If it is currently hand-coded in an optimized manner, their programming would go faster, but would run more slowly. I kind of doubt that Tony knows what he is talking about.

Correct on both points. I considered that an Android OS might be overkill and Sony may have already achieved max efficiency with what it requires, and to be honest I don't know enough about coding to even speculate -- but when have I ever allowed lack of knowledge to stop me?

Seems some are missing the point. Tony didn't suggest that Sony would downgrade its cameras. He simply postulated that Sony might adopt an Android operating system that would allow for faster operation and transfer speeds plus increased versatility and customization. If this happens, we won't see any decrease in imaging quality.

Gotta admit, Tony made a persuasive argument. But he also once argued that we don't need circular polarizers, and that wasn't his only misguided idea that went to video -- which is why I unsubscribed a few years ago (guess I'm a Tony-hater, Jerry).

Tony failed to mention that around 8-10 years ago, Samsung released three Android cameras: two point & shoot and an APS-C mirrorless ILC. They were the Galaxy, Galaxy 2, and Galaxy NX.
