Standing on the Ross Island Bridge looking north

Nice shot, but just being on the Ross Island Bridge, on foot, would be pretty scary to me.

Damn mole in my backyard is driving me crazy... Short of hiring someone to trap it, anyone have any solutions ?

If you can find castor beans, they are used to make castor oil, put a few in an active run. They will leave.

All of this hatred with new operating systems is really funny to me. I remember my Grandfather saying pretty much the same thing about automatic transmissions! "I am perfectly capable of shifting my own gears and don't need anybody doing it for me!" These days semi trucks even have automatic transmissions.
You all might as well get used to win8 and that style of interface. It is a push to the tablet style computer. In the near future desktop and laptop designs will be a thing of the past. Tablet design is here for the long run. (However long that actually is will be the question)
Win8 and 8.1 are fine systems. The upgrade to 8.1 isn't all that great as the so called "start" button doesn't actually do any more than the windows key. Now you just use the "search" button for finding anything and everything.

Can you be more specific? I'm not familiar with the city or area at all.

Sorry it has taken a couple of days to get back on here, have been really busy though.

It would be a bit of a drive but up the Trans-Canada Highway to "Hells Gate Airtram" is a good one. The Tram goes down the gorge to a dam and there is a good Candy and Sweet Shop at the bottom. The Highway follows the Fraser River and has numerous opportunities.
In Vancouver either of the ferry terminals, (Horseshoe Bay and Tswasswnen) are good. Capilano swinging bridge is awesome also in North Vancouver. Downtown has several places for Architecture. There are numerous places along any of the routes. Stop at one of the tourist info booths for maps and ideas.
Hope this helps.

Business is going to take me to Chilliwack, B.C. in a few weeks and I should have a Sunday off for sightseeing and photo ops. Any suggestions?

Your not far from Vancouver, there's lots of good photo ops there. Also up the Trans Canada Highway, I believe it somewhat follows the Fraser River valley.

So I was out along Lake Michigan yesterday morning at dawn. I was at several places but want to ask about a situation where I shot from a bridge looking out onto the lake with the sun in both my eyes visually and well as reflecting off the water. So I grabbed my brand new, first time using B+W KSM C-POL filter. Upon screwing it in I realized there's no markings on it as in 'lines here' ... I did a few rotations but maybe I was just overwhelmed by the sun in my eyes. Maybe it was that I was making quarter turns looking at the lens with the sun at my back rather than looking through the view finder? Later last night I held the filter in front of my eyes and rotated on a reflection coming off a metal bowl. I could watch the reflection come and go as I rotated the filter. But, I'm surprised that's all you can do: trial and error. Thoughts?

For a cp to work as it was designed you must be perpendicular to the light source, not looking into it or with it behind you. It will reduce glare on reflective surfaces. It will also darken a blue sky somewhat. What else did you expect it to do?

Throw away is basically just a figure of speach. The fact is you can't upgrade an existing body. It doesn't matter what happens to the old one, YOU won't be using it as a rebuilt to higher standards componet. Whether you sell it, stash it or toss it makes no difference to the original question. I think it is simply a money factor. OEM's don't want anybody else touching their equipment internally. Just ask them, they will say that nobody is qualified but them. It would cost way more to return your camera body to be inspected, gutted and upgraded by the manufacturer than to just buy the complete new body.

I'll have to research more. It may be worthwhile just to buy a used camera and go for the conversion. Thank you.

I got a converted Nikon bridge camera on eBay for $170. It does a fine job.

Biggest problem with using an IR filter is very slow shutter speeds. (15 or more seconds) If there is any movement with subject it will be blurry and out of focus. You will also need to focus prior to installing filter. (You can't see through the filter) Auto focus also does not work well at all through the filter. Other than that they work well. I started IR with filters and had a ball using them. Now I have a Nikon bridge and a dslr that have been converted.
Also search IR here on UHH for loads of information.
Filters are a cost effective way to try it out and experiment. Have fun!

Your laptop probably has a connection for an external monitor!! Hook that up and do your editing on that screen instead of the built in screen!! You can either set it up to use as the only screen or as a "dual screen" setup!!
Your local tech can easily help you set that up!!

Wahawk has a good answer to your viewing situation. You don't really need a tech to set it up, it's quite easy.
I never had a problem with Vista ever.

Thank you! I used StarStaX...I had done a google search for stacking software for a Mac and found this one. Seems to do a pretty good job and is very simple to use.

The video can be found at this link (Mods, if that's not OK to post, my apologies). You do not have to have a facebook account to view it. When the window comes up, be sure to click the HD at the bottom right to view it in the best image.

Full moon shots are hard to do as there are no shadows to help pull out the craters and texture. Even really good ones look blown out. Try shooting a partial moon and you will find it much easier and in my opinion more pleasing.

I was hoping to be able to come up with some system that would allow me to use filters and a hood with as much commonalty as possible between lens sizes without having a Frankensteininean appendage on the end of my camera but it sounds like I may be singing that song from 'Man of La Mancha'

You could use still use the 58mm lens hood with the 58mm filter stepped down to the 55mm lens.

I see in Windows 8 where there is a system backup tool that backs up your c drive, but I don't see a way yo use that back up to restore. Has anyone have experience with this or can answer my question?

It is in the control panel/all control panel items/recovery. Make sure you have the control panel view in either small icons or large icons and not in catagory.
Hope that helps.
