I’m using a D7200 and D90 cameras. Looking for recommendations fo purchase of quality gimbal head for wildlife photography. (Hopefully brands/models ypu’ve used and liked) Thanks in advance.

I use a Nest carbon fiber gimbal from camera cottage. The owner, Mt shooter is a regular on this site. I use it with a Nikon d850 and 200 - 500 Nikkor lens.i mainly use it for kite/windsurfers. It is very well made and easily accommodates this combination. I consider the price to be very reasonable for the superior quality and service provided.

I have gotten good advise here before -- thanks for that! Situation: Just set up my new computer (had it for two years but kept using the old one since it contained all my programs and files). Up graded from an i5 to i7 platform. I'm paranoid about loosing photos since I have lost some in the past. I keep buying external hard drives and duplicating my saved files. I'm up to around 12 drives and there is quite a bit of duplication. Since I keep adding material, I've steadily gone up from 500gb to 5tb units. To keep from duplicating over and over, I would like to get a hard drive to park next to the new computer and have it mirror exactly what I'm putting on my new computer. Is there a program that will do this? I know when I process photos I can send them to two addresses, but I want a program that will mirror everything I do.

Thanks in advance,
Mike

I am trying to decide which of these 2 photos I want to have printed out on a metallic surface. Thought I might get a few opinions. Which would you have done?

Number 2 is much more interesting to me. Perhaps add the sky from the first into the second.

I bought some Gator Board and used spray on adhesive which seemed to work pretty good except sometimes there is little clumps of glue that leave a very small bump on the picture. I'm trying to decide if it is worth it to mount my pictures on Gator Board I haven't come to a definite decision yet. Looking at cost factors but those metal prints sure do look good and they look like they will last a long time. Wondering what other Hoggers have came up with mounting their pictures.

Thanks

I have multiple prints up to 40” x 24” that were commercially mounted on gator board over 35 years ago and the mounting is as good today as when done originally. They were done by a commercial photo outlet in Seattle (unfortunately they are no longer around but the prints are). Best of luck.

Tired of my cell phone taking better photos than a "budget" oriented ASP-C camera I bought last fall does. Took photos on vacation in NE last fall that were really good, pretty much properly exposed, but just lousy resolution...

So, about to pull the trigger on a D850. Looking for feedback on the lens selection I'm looking at to get started with to put together a starter kit.

Interests are as follows:

1. Landscape...sunrise, sunset, mountains (valleys) when on vacation I live on an island (very small and flat), so SR/SS with and without clouds is a primary source of opportunity.

2. Low light night, moon, lightning.

3. Macro....but none of the lenses below apply. For a later discussion.

4. Wildlife

5. All the rest...really have somewhere between little, and no, interest in people being in my images. (Wife of 37 years and 32 year old daughter excepted)

Have little to no loyalty to "name brand" lenses...if it works, and is more economical, all the better.

I'm not a "professional", but I am, by nature, critical, so want something in >85% range on quality

These are what I'm looking at to get started with on the D850:.

Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 14-24mm f/2.8G ED

Tamron 24-70mm F/2.8 G2 Di VC USD G2

Tamron SP 70-200mm f/2.8 Di VC USD G2

Any and all comments and constructive criticism welcome

Cheers

I too shoot with the d 850. I would substitute the sigma 14-24 2.8 Art for the Nikon version. Read the reviews and use the savings for the Nikon 70 - 200, which warrants the stellar reviews. I am also very happy with my Nikon 24-70. Best of luck.

Howdy from Texas. I have a Nikon CoolPix P1000 and a Canon 6D mkII with Tamron 150-600mm, and I truly enjoy taking pix of the moon, Saturn, etc... however, as the earth is rocketing through the solar system at 17,500 mph its really difficult to capture shots on a ball head, or even a 3 way pan and tilt head. I need a 3 way gear head--I think.

I'm looking at the Manfrotto XPro 3-way geared head ($155.00) or the Manfrotto 410 3 Way geared head ($255.00).

I'm open to ideas, suggestions, and comments please.

TIA

I have the manfrotto 405 and find it to be precise and stable using a gripped d 850 and Nikkor 200 - 500. Check the weight of what you plan to mount and the load capacity of the head. Best of luck.

Apparently linda from Maine is gone...

Here is her notice.

I too share many of the sentiments expressed by others regarding Linda's tremendous contributions to this site and the anticipated void her departure (hopefully temporary) will leave. I have been a member for only a year or so but that has been more than sufficient time for me to appreciate her willingness to pitch in and help others in a open, congenial and non-judgemental way. Some here could certainly try better to emulate her in this regard. I hope that after some reflection, rest and relaxation, she will miss many aspsects of this forum and return, regardless, all the best Linda, you are already missed.

Agree, you can definitely drop the “novice” title. Well done.

By the position of the sun, I would have expected the tower reflections to be slanted to the right from the base of the towers and not appear as an “extension” directly down vertically into the water. Regardless, enjoy your posts and accompanying comments.

Hi
What AF settings should I use for my D850 to properly track subjects that are moving (wildlife, birds) and get tack sharp photos instead of the focus point / area being in the ‘wrong’ place as the subject moves? For still shots I use back button focus via the AF-ON button programmed to single point focus. My camera is set to AF-C.

I agree. Steve Perry’s book on the Nikon autofocus system is an excellent resource.

Just a heads up about the dangers of no knowing what your doing.. Apparently I used one with to many amps. Really not any instructions came with it but Amazon had something about 1 amp.

I just today ordered one of these from amazon, supposed to be delivered tomorrow. It looks like you used a battery pack similar to what I was going to use, a Rav power pack that I use to charge up my cell phone. The ad said that this type of power pack was what to use. Can you provide any more details on the power source you used? Thanks.

I need some help with focus stacking in Photoshop. I am a very new user of both PS and LR (classic versions via monthly subscription), and relatively new to digital photography, but not photography (Nikon F2's and Kodachrome 64) from many years ago, even sold some prints back then. I hesitate to ask this question as I know the breadth of knowledge on this site and am somewhat worried about getting buried in highly technical responses, but if that is what it takes, so be it.

I stack focused 7 images in camera (Nikon D 850). I then downloaded into LR and adjusted/developed all 7 using a preset I defined in Lightroom, I then exported all 7 images to PS as layers. In the lower left hand corner of PS it shows "7 Layers" for the photo. I want to "Auto Align, and "Auto Blend" but these actions are grayed out under the "Edit" tab in PS. Here is where I am stuck. I doubt PS aligned and blended them when exported from Lightroom, since the definition is not quite up to what I expected, but I am not able to "ungray" the actions I want to apply.

Just as a double check I used a different image, same process as above but 15 layers and the same as before, in the bottom left hand corner of PS it says "15 layers" but the actions I want are still grayed out, aaaarrrrgghghgh.

My PC has a current i7 chip, 1 TB SSD, 32 MB Ram, and a Nvidia 1060 6 GB graphics card, so I doubt I am lacking the necessary computing power. Hopefully, the solution is very simple to match my limited knowledge of the programs. Thanks in advance for reading this far and for any guidance that can be provided.

I would like to get into some night time shooting in urban areas, downtown buildings, marinas, waterfront walking areas, perhaps more remote areas for star trails and Milky Way vistas etc., no sketchy areas (urban decay type areas). I am 6' 3" and 205 pounds and can take care of myself, but when looking through a viewfinder, one can lose track of one's surroundings and in general, when carrying expensive gear, two people is just plain safer. If anyone has similar interests and concerns, please PM me and perhaps this could provide new opportunities. I'm not looking for a large group or anything like that, just another person, possibly 2 at the most who may have the same interests and concerns. I am located in Washington state in the Browns Point area of Tacoma. Initially, for urban photography I would go as far north as Seattle and as far south as Olympia.
