PSCC 2018 worked great for me, but since the 2019 upgrade came along, I've noticed a couple of anomalies that are bothersome.

Select and Mask - I had been amazed at how well 2018 performed this 'trick'. It just worked and worked very well. However, in 2019, I have considerable issues with getting a good selection, especially where there are (for example) many tree branches or lots of fly-away hair. Has anyone else experienced this?

Duplicating the Layer - When I open an image in 2019, whether from 'Edit-In' in LR, or just opening an image, habit dictates that I press CTRL-J for the duplicate layer. This doesn't work!! I have to close the image and re-open it. Once I do, CTRL-J works as it should. What's up with that?

I've reset the tools, but that didn't help. Any insight into these issues will be most appreciated.

Yes. The History indicates Luminance adjustments for those colors.

Can you provide a little information on how you brought out the color and details?

:-/ Took that image 7 years ago. I truly don't recall everything I did, but I know I was using LR to do it. I recall I employed a preset to help me along, then worked on enhancing the rust color to get some color into the image. Since that time, I've incorporated some standards to my efforts that allow me to understand what I did to an image. Sorry!

I used a preset named 'Edge Effects', which is no longer available, that I can find. But below are some of the adjustments from the History.

Please share one of your favorite "heavily processed" landscapes and talk a bit about your vision and how you created the result.

Many thanks for your participation!

Here's one to start. I changed the reality (photo #2) from warm sunrise to explore more mysterious and moody. Is there a sense that this is nighttime and moonlit?

In my raw editor I changed white balance to custom and this faded blue. In Nik Color Efex I used several filters in varying modes and strengths: contrast color, low key, duplex. I created bottom half of sun (which is obscured by a ridge line in original), added a great blue heron from another photo (they are very common in the pastures catching rodents the cattle stir up). Final touches included some softening and cloning of fog and lessening of background details.

Thank you Linda and Minniev!

I've attached before and after images of the Tyrone Bridge in central Kentucky (across the Kentucky River), near Lawrenceburg. The bridge is a rail bridge and quite old. In fact, it is no longer used for train traffic. (Some group has leased the bridge to hold organized bungee jumping events now.) I wanted an image of it but there are scant locations from which to get a good shot. I chose a position under the bridge on its eastern end. The third image (which is unfinished) gives some scale to the bridge.

I chose to enhance the rust of the old bridge, which I thought brought considerable color to it. Incidentally, those buildings on the hill in the far background house the Wild Turkey bourbon distillery.

I’ve been a monitor since last April. Had major setback in macula degeneration (long history with the disease.) OD did not expect much improvement. Have dry type in right eye, and wet type in left eye. Also, much retinal scaring in left eye. Sold all my “good” stuff, a Canon 5D/IV and Oly E-M1 Mk/II and all glass and associated equip. Over summer months, noticed slight improvement in visual acuity in left eye, and with regular injections to mitigate swelling and fluid buildup, vision slowly returned, though not to the level before setback. PP on my Mac is still a challenge, but I cope. Decided to pick up where I left off in April. In early December, my local B&M, Southeastern Camera in Raleigh, had just taken in a lightly used 5D S/R and I snapped it up at a pretty good price. Starting to build up glass inv. Limited in photo ops since I can’t drive and I don’t like to impose. So I shoot mostly local social ops, car events, etc. I don’t expect to post much in the coming months, but I will chime in with comments as I view all the good stuff posted by all the fine folk on this forum.

Thanks. Not sure I knew about this.

I enjoyed looking through the submissions in this thread. I find it interesting how everyone's vision of the scene is different. There's no right, nor wrong. It just is. I like that.

I-fox and Bruce, thank you for your edits! I did a little wrap-up with my thoughts a bit earlier. Please feel free to expand and discuss the points.

Linda, thank you for your insight. This was a productive and fun exercise. I, for one, would love to see more of this!! You may not want to be 'that' involved, and I would understand that. But, if you got enjoyment out of it, and have a hankering to do it again, please do!!

Your color rendition is very good!! As you know, I've been piddling with black & white and appreciate this exercise. I've attached my version, done in PS.

I posted this over at Post Processing and got no takers, so I'll try again here.

I'm using the latest Photoshop CC update, and I am noticing that some processed ".psd" files don't show exposure data in the Bridge metadata panel.

Some ".psd" files are showing up as thumbnails in Bridge, and some are showing up with just a ".psd" symbol; it's these later files that don't show exposure data in the metadata panel.

When these are converted to ".jpg" files, they still don't show the exposure data. The ".NEF" files I started with do show the data.

Anyone know any trick I'm missing to keep that metadata showing?

BTW, I'm working in Mojave 10.14.2, if that makes any difference.

Truly bizarre. Not being intimate with your workflow puts me at a disadvantage, but this could be a great candidate to lay in Adobe’s lap. I say that simply because they may have overlooked a couple bits in the code. I use LR, in lieu of Br, and my data goes through without fail. I always save PS work as a PSD, and then regularly export as JPG. Those JPG’s get the data too. (I just verified this by looking at the data on a JPG I exported to DropBox, and read the data on the browser rendering.) I’ll be watching this.

Today when I opened Lightroom it came up then quit and a message popped up "you have been logged out of creative cloud.. " and some other text I don't remember exactly. So I opened the creative cloud program (App) and signed in then the window went completely white. Odd. But now LR was working ok so I just said WTF and quit the CC program (App).

Later I reopened the Creative Cloud program (App) and there was a message dated 6 days ago something like "Creative cloud payment failed Please update your information in order not to lose access to the creative cloud". (Paraphrased)

Huh? I paid for a year subscription last August. It is not August 2019 yet correct? See attached image. But the subscription seems to be working ok now.

So here is my question:
Am the only one inflicted with this confusion or is this an Adobe problem affecting multiple users?

I had a similar experience where it asked me to log in. I thought I was perpetually logged in, but guess not. After logging in, all was fine. It never mentioned my payment method.

the most difficult concept for the majority of people is grasping how the Library Module works and the import/export process.

. . . and that's precisely where I would start. Lightroom's strength is its ability to support organizational concepts. It has a strong database (SQLite) that makes all that happen. Knowing how it does that makes the tool much more robust.

Unfortunately, as I'm sure you have found, many (most ?) folks don't know enough about how their computer works, which makes the database difficult to grasp.

Good luck!!

An easy way to buy the latest standalone ("perpetual license") version of the traditional Lightroom is from B&H. It costs $149 for either a disk to be shipped to you or a direct download. The disk will likely install as 6.0 and suggest an immediate internet update to 6.14. The direct download will probably be 6.14. "Technical Support" continues on an Adobe sponsored forum of skilled users. Direct support from Adobe staff has ceased.

https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/search?Ntt=Lightroom%206&N=0&InitialSearch=yes&sts=ma&Top+Nav-Search=

Paul Sager suggests above that upgrading from 5.7 to 6.14 may be a waste of time and money. I'll be more direct! It is a waste. The traditional Lightroom, now called "Classic" is at version 8.1. Instead of a near nothing minor upgrade, consider shopping for a complete replacement. UHH is full of topics about suitable products.

In the spirit of this being a forum and me standing on my soapbox (!) the discussion about Lightroom as a subscription only gets confusing. It is no longer a standalone product. It is now one part of a interdependent multipart system. Adobe saw that more photograpers than not, needed to go beyond the confines of Lightroom. They bundled Photoshop with the old Lightroom and added a new Lightroom. They threw in Bridge and Portfolio. It is no longer what Lightroom will do. Instead it is about what does the photographer want to do and what collection of tools does he need to do it.

Managing it as anything else other than a rented package is not feasible. Yes, rentals are offensive to some and they are moving on to something they like better for what they do. Adobe's cloud subscription (rental) base continues to expand because, in part, photographers have a need for what's contained in the components.

By example, yesterday I took a desert walk and came back with a dozen pictures I wanted to share. I edited them in Lightroom Classic, touched a couple of the up in Photoshop, synced them to Lightroom (cloud) and "published" a shareable "web gallery". I did this with only a cell phone internet connection from an RV. I wanted friends and family to see ONLY this dozen, so emailed this link: https://adobe.ly/2ETIedP

I needed all three parts of the package to do what I did. If one does not want tools that go beyond the traditional Lightroom, he/she should look for a replacement.
