What are your most used LR features?

I agreed to speak on Lightroom (LR) to my photography club in February. Of course LR is so chalk-full of features that I could easily over-whelm my audience with an exhausting list. I though I would focus on the most useful workflow enhancements. Specifically: those lesser known, but useful, shortcut keys and features that you wish you knew about earlier.

So I'm asking UHH subscribers , what useful LR shortcut keys/features do you wish someone had told you about earlier?

Just curious, LCD. You have agreed to speak and now seek advice on your 'bullet points?' Hum,

Well, yes. I could just run down the list of the ones I found most useful, and I have a bunch. But I'm discovering new features all the time and I thought an exchange on UHH might be useful to some other members. You don't know what you don't know, and all of that.

Have you thought about declining and doing more research?

Yes, LR is "chock-full" of features, but you can focus on the most important ones. You know your audience (one would hope) so you can prepare a not-too-technical talk. I think the shortcut key list is pretty extensive - merely mentioning them is all you need to do.

Are you using an "LR Tips and Tricks" model or are you going to introduce non-users to it?

There are a lot of questions that without good answers from you makes this hard to respond to.

I always found creating a black background on the odd occasions I needed it to be well out of my comfort zone in photoshop. Someone told me you could do it in lightroom...and you can...usually from my point of view with far better results.

Forget about shortcuts for beginners, it will only add confusion. Once a user discovers the features that he/she uses consistently they will/may gravitate to the shortcuts.

In general keep the workflow simple. Again, if his is introductory don't jump into the lesser known. I have over the years of doing LR classes, do many short sessions slowly building into the lesser known.

How well do you know the club members? How advanced are THEY. I suggest you tell stories about how you discovered new abilities.
When I teach people about using computers I find the hardest thing to get them to do is to “click and see what happens.” Yet that is the most important and most successful way to learn any new software.
Pick a “bad” photo and see what happens when you try this or that.
In fact a demo of exploring would be remembered better than a bullet list of options.

I start with Profile in the Basic panel.

Hi, lots comments at this point but not very helpful for the most part, or so it seems. What you find useful and I find useful could differ greatly in many cases. Having said that, as I teach LR, the most difficult concept for the majority of people is grasping how the Library Module works and the import/export process. The actual processing of images seems to be the easiest thing to grasp for most people. But within the Develop Module you might check out the Transform Panel. I find that the majority of people I work with do not know about this panel and one key thing it can do for your images, aside from correct distortion. When the image I take is small and I could not get it as large as I wanted I use the Scale slider in Transform to enlarge the image. The X and Y offset are used to move the image either up and down or side to side and you can place the image where you want it. This approach works well with minor cropping involved and the crop tool can be open at the same time. LR is a very large and "robust" application of features and you might consider letting the group know that you are only going to cover a few techniques as they will most definitely get overwhelmed if you cover too much. Good luck. You can check out my viathelens website on LR if you want to. https://www.viathelens.net.

I use LR as first step for RAW files before exporting to other software. For whatever reason, other RAW processors didn't work for me. They were a mess. Lightroom can take a photo shot in a dark room with no light and bring out an image from complete darkness. The attached image is a good example. This house had no electric service. The green bathtub on the left was completely black darkness out of the camera. Lighroom pulled out an image that I could work with. My sensor size is four thirds. I wish that I could afford full frame. I think that the ability to work with difficult light in Lightroom would be even greater.
