PSCC 2019 Issues

PSCC 2018 worked great for me, but since the 2019 upgrade came along, I've noticed a couple of anomalies that are bothersome.

Select and Mask - I had been amazed at how well 2018 performed this 'trick'. It just worked and worked very well. However, in 2019, I have considerable issues with getting a good selection, especially where there are (for example) many tree branches or lots of fly-away hair. Has anyone else experienced this?

Duplicating the Layer - When I open an image in 2019, whether from 'Edit-In' in LR, or just opening an image, habit dictates that I press CTRL-J for the duplicate layer. This doesn't work!! I have to close the image and re-open it. Once I do, CTRL-J works as it should. What's up with that?

I've reset the tools, but that didn't help. Any insight into these issues will be most appreciated.

I too have had problems with 2019. the most notable being that I have to sign in following a reboot every time I open either PS or LR. I agree with you that Select and mask is not working as it should but have no problems with Control + J.

Adobe technicians, having failed to resolve the problems, reinstalled PS CC 2018 which does not have the sign in hassle. They also wanted to reinstall LR CC to an older version and seemed bemused when I told them that my 2019 catalogue would not open in the older version.

I got round most of the problems by opening PS CC 2018 (no sign in), then Lightroom Classic 2019 (no sign in), closing CC 2018 and then opening 2019 (no sign in).

If I want to achieve a delicate selection I now use CC 2018.

Not a good solution Adobe, but they have said if I change from Win 7 to Win 10, the problems will go away. Maybe they will, but I will not be able to use some (very expensive) software which will not run on Win 10. If I can find a good replacement for the Digital Asset Management in LR, I will probably dump Adobe.

Thank you!! FWIW, I run Win10. At one point, after the upgrade, I reverted back to 2018, but my issues persisted. Adobe has changed something in one of their software libraries that's causing the issues, but I don't know where, of course. Hopefully, a resolution comes with the next update.

UPDATE:

After some research, I find I am not the only one with the CTRL-J issue. There is a work-around. Go into Preferences, on the General tab, and tick the box for 'Disable the Home Screen'. Shut down PS and re-launch. CTRL-J now works as expected.

I have found a few things in PS 2019 that don't work right or I don't like how they work and went back to PS 2018 for now

So far no issues as detailed with PS CC 2019 on OS X Mojave, however I did finally have to upgrade my MacPro to be able to install Mojave (OS X 10.14.2) and search around to find a Thunderbolt 2 break out box so I could keep using my eSATA external raid and connect to my thunderbolt 2 equipped fiber optic cables running to the basement cold room. It was Adobe that prompted the move as the 2019 versions would not install on my 2008 Mac Pro.

FWIW I managed to find a previously owned Mac Pro (the trash can version) at Other World Computing for about $1800 with 48GB RAM and a 1 TB SSD.

I too had the Ctrl-J issue but did not realize it was due to the upgrade. Thanks for breaking the bad news. I will try the fix. Why cannot developers leave things alone if they work properly?

In software development, it's the nature of the beast. Something they changed in some part of the application affected the shortcut key designations in some way. Should be an easy fix for them, but something else may suffer from the fix. :-)

I was on my computer when the update appeared . SO I shut down PS 2018 and installed the update . My biggest problem was PS 2019 freezing coming out of sleep mode Windows 10 . Glad they addressed that . The other problem was when using the text tool . Will have to check that out next . Maybe now I can use PS 2019.Tom

I just tested this by un-ticking the 'Disable the Home Screen' option, shutting down PS and re-launching it. Opened a file with only the background layer and pressed CTRL-J. I got a duplicate layer. Seems the latest update fixed this.
