Get a DOF app for your phone and you can play with different aperture, focal length and distance to the subject settings to see how they change relative to each other. Shorter focal lengths will give greater DOF at shorter distances than longer focal lengths at longer distances. For example a 50mm focal length at f/5.6 on a FF body at a distance of 7 feet to the subject focus point will have a DOF of about 2 feet. A 100mm focal length at the same aperture and distance will have only about 6 inches of DOF. To achieve 2 feet of DOF total you would need to be about 42 feet away if shooting at f/5.6 with a 300mm lens. These numbers are not naturally in your mind so a DOF app is very useful tool to play with and get a feel for how the settings relate.

I just went to the App store. There are several DOF apps. Any recommendation about which one to get?
