I just recently bought my first smart cellular telephone with a camera feature. I too find the camera awkward to operate. The shutter lag can run to 1 or 2 seconds. How to hold the camera while pressing the virtual shutter button presents a physical difficulty. Often, I inadvertently touch something that causes the camera feature to change to a different "app" (application). Evidently, the phone has no option for locking the camera in shooting mode. I suppose a page exists where I might find all settings for camera operation, to customize it, but I haven't unearthed it yet. I find myself on the learning curve.

I do like the text feature because I do 100s of text messages per month.

Yup! People here said that I have to learn how to use it and I guess if I learn I would be able to use it but I simply use the DSLR. It's much easier.

Do not fear the cameras in cellphones. They simply serve a niche in the photographic world and represent a transition from mainly mechanical to mainly digitally created photos. The two worlds will eventually mesh together so thoroughly that you will not be able to tell the end product from one versus the other. And if you’re just a viewer and not a printer, the difference is negligible. I can fantasize a digital zoom that equals the quality of a mechanical zoom, built-in macro with on demand focus stacking, and an ultra-high ISO without noise. They’re on their way.

There's nothing wrong with adding a camera-like feature to cell phones. It's handy.
And new cell phones always have the very latest in display screens and low-power
processors (not that that has anything to do with photography, but it is neat).

There is something wrong with marketing cell phones as replacements for cameras: it's deceptive
and has had a diasterous effect on camera sales.

This isn't a "step" towards anything except increasing the profits of Apple and Samsung.

Somene could claim that Microsoft Paint is a step in "a transition from mainly mechanical
to mainly digitally created" paintings. Consumbers and computer buffs liked it--but
artists hated it. Artists make art; consumers love paint-by-numbers.

Ditto with cell phone cameras: consumers love them, photographers hate them. Image
capture is not the same thing as photography.

There are substitutes,
and then there are inferior substitutes: rhine stones, silver plate, leatherette.

What is a cell phone camera?
* Subminiature format sensor ==> more diffration
* Shutterless (rolling shutter sensor or global shutter sensor)
* Limited to one or two aperture (f-stops)
* Limited to one or two lenses (not counting clamp-on "helper" lenses)

How are cell phone cameras being marketed? As replacemens for digital camers.

What effect has this had? Global shipments of digital still camers have declined by
over 70% since 2010.

Words don't alter facts. But marketers and politicians know that if you repeat
something enough times -- and get other peopel to repeat it -- it becomes a fact
in the mind of the public.

The camera in my cellular telephone takes okay snapshots. That's about the size of it.

I'm not fooled in anyway by sell-jobs -- that somehow a phone camera can produce a result to rival that of a DSLR.

I've owned and used DSLRs for years. I know the significant difference in quality these cameras produce over phone cameras.

Nice snapshot! Too bad the top of the tower is underexposed.

But when did the gold standard of photography become how things look in
a small image on a computer monitor?

Exactly! Cellphones are convenient. For my serious work, I'll take out the DSLR.

Most important of all: will the Nikon D7 allow the user to play
Angry Birds and Crushing Candies?

Why would anyone want to use a camera that doesn't let you take
photographs, play games, talk on the phone, and post to Facebook
all at the same time? Isn't that what photography is about?

If you asked a photo enthusiast or wannabe they will pick the "Real Camera" almost every time.

The typical person in the street will choose the smart phone. The sales numbers tell the story. The newer phones are capable of producing excellent images.

The weakest link in the photographic process is the person behind the camera, regardless of camera type or skill level.
