Welcome to our Brave New World. Nothing is ever repaired, only replaced. It's of great benefit to manufacturers, but is a problem for their customers, but we are powerless. Obviously, our landfills need filling.

This is a very informative post. A 2 y old lens that costs $1700 is a disposable lens because they won't repair stuff? My 1993 Canon lens can be repaired it I needed to. Was toying with the idea of the G9x system but that will never happen. Will not buy Panasonic or recommend anyone else to. Would suggest that anyone that wants to jump on the latest mirrorless bandwagon to read about repair and support history of the different vendors

Cheer up and don't feel bad! Theses things happen, even to experienced professionals- like me. We use neck straps, holsters, harness, heavy duty tripods and brackets and take all kinds of precautions and nonetheless, every now and again- BANG-CRASH- SPLAT! There is hardly anythg more of a cringe moment than hearing the sound of gear striking a hard surface-ugh!

Do double check with your insurance carrier and see if there is any compensation available. When it comes time to renew or replace your policies, look into the various perils that are covered and not covered and see if the additional premiums and deductibles make sense. Sometimes it's just best to bite the bullet and pay for repairs and.or replacement rather than pay exorbitant premiums.

My experience with repairs is that they are best carried out by the "official' manufacturers repair department or authorized contractor. Again, make certain that their work is guaranteed and that they check to see if the fall has affected anything else. If you decide to upgrade to a refurbished unit, again make certain that the warranty is to you satisfaction- you don't want to get stuck with an abused demo or someone else's damaged camera.

Good luck!

check your homeowners/rental insurance, if you carried coverage for the camera as part of a property insurance, that may cover the cost!~

Most homeowner insurance coverages only cover - theft or fire things of that nature, may be lost or stolen, but not drop or breakage. And Square Trade or the other drop and breakage insurance's don't cover fire - theft, and loss. So that is why I carry both. Homeowners for the fire, etc and Newleaf for the drop and breakage. When you have good equipment it pays to have insurance. Some homeowners my cover breakage, but best to check with our carrier.

Deanie: Check with your home owners insurance agent. You may be covered as a scheduled item, or under the replacement cost feature of the policy. I'm insured for these kinds of accidents with Auto Owners insurance co. as a feature of my home owners policy. My wife was a former insurance agent.

An expensive and fairly new lens and the manufacturer won’t fix it or even look at it? This would be the end of my relationship with Panasonic. Why would you ever buy something from them again? I’ve broken lenses and body’s and motor drives and Nikon fixes them right up. Find a brand that will back up its products.

I purchased a Panasonic Leica 100-400 mm lens and a Lumix GX8. When purchasing, I made the mistake of buying the Square Trade insurance wrongly thinking it was for both. But, it was apparently for the camera only. The camera, with the lens attached and in the camera bag, got knocked to a floor, and now both the camera and lens and lens are broken. Square Trade is handling the repair of my camera. But I don't know exactly what to do about this very expensive lens. I took it in to a camera repair shop in Asheville, NC, who said that the lens mount as well as some electrical connections are broke, but they cannot fix the lens mount because they cannot get a part for it. They said the lens looked fine. The lens was purchased (B & H) 4/18. Naturally, the warranty doesn't cover an accidental drop. I am sick about this. Any good advice? :( Thank you, friends!

Hi Indiana, Thank you. I called my insurance agent and he explained to me that I don't have a schedule on the lens and that it is not covered under my policy because it didn't get destroyed in a fire, hurricane, etc. Just dropping it doesn't count. It was a good thought, though!

Check to see if your homeowner's insurance will help.

Can I ask you why you would post your suggestion on page 4 without reading all the replies? Not only has the same thing been recommended a million times, the OP has already posted the response from her insurance company.
