WOW. Almost what, 10 months later the pipeline is catching up to demand.

With a July 17, 2017 announcement date (give or take), it appears that Nikon’s marketing strategy created a ready market, teasing us, knowing availability would be extremely limited for a year or so. Smart strategy on Nikon’s part. It worked!

Maybe they know our consumers are easier.

Don’t know. Guess that’s a question for the Nikon marketing team.

You nailed it, Nikon has been working hard on their new mirrorless camera and that slowed D850 production for sure. The D850 and new Nikon mirrorless likely share the same basic image sensor, (made by SONY BTW).

This logic totally escapes me here.

Once a device is put into production....does a company really slow down production in order to do research on the next device? Or do the production facilities keep on manufacturing that first device so they can sell it and make some money while the research department is working on the next device....

Is there possibly a lack of knowledge in this forum on how companies actually operate in order to, like, make money? Which, as I understand it, is the only purpose behind a company’s being in business.

Hello, anybody home?

Somehow I believe it could be a skillful marketing strategy based on the various consumer habits. They created a heck of a demand and probably speculated that US consumers would feed on the hype and get on waiting lists.

That skillful marketing strategy would have had a very real negative effect on anticipated income. Unless of course the plan was to defer income in anticipation of a major tax reduction in Japan.

And then there will be a lot of barely used D850s for sale cheap.

Apparently they are surviving and the 850 appears to be doing well, so I guess it could all be accidental.

I don't get it.... WHY is anyone trying to make purchase decisions now when in a few short weeks/months we will be actually SHOWN the new models by Nikon and Canon. I would think the prudent thing to do would be to wait and evaluate the new offerings when they arrive.... Take some Beano and get your Gas under control.

That's fine if you want to start over with new lenses to go with the new mirrorless. The D850 has been around, well reviewed, etc.

B&H, Amazon, and Best Buy are giving expected delivery dates in the next 5 - 10 days. They are no longer saying Pre-order. Best Buy states I can pick one up in my local store on August 1.

It's a dinosaur now, the new mirrowless is about to arrive

No one wants to start over. On the other hand you can't legacy everything for perpetuity... and, who really knows if you will be starting over. All I am saying is that being this close to the " Great Reveal ", what is the rush to a buying decision before all the facts are known; there are a lot of rumors floating around. Brand loyalty is nice, but what has ANY brand done for me personally but sell me a product !

I thought we were talking about the folks still lining up and waiting for the D850 which has long been revealed. How many of those are thinking about changing systems and care about a mirrorless release?

That was my thought and I don't believe we are on the same page.

Not sure but I was in Japan a few weeks ago and decided to take a tour of Nikon. I remember hearing someone yell, "Hey Akihiko stop building D850 DSLRs and get back to designing a Mirrorless camera. Those crazy American DSLR lovers will wait.
