Windows 10 upgrades hung up at 99% completion

In early May, my Win 10 auto updated to build 1803. I had no choice. The update failed and I was stuck in an endless loop; first screen asked me to choose a keyboard language which I did, and it kept looping back. I spoke with a PC technician who was keenly aware of the problem with this build Andreas quite concerned that thousands of users were affected. Had to do fresh install of Win 10 from my original recovery discs. Lost all programs and files but had backups via Backblaze (another lengthy and difficult process). My images were stored on an external drive and I was able to reinstall programs. Then, 2 weeks ago I got another update (again, no option to block as all shutdown choices included update). Two separate chats with Microsoft allowing them to remotely control my PC finally worked. A horror story and if this was an automobile defect, it would be all over the place publicly.

Sorry, I could not resist....I made the switch back to Apple 18 years ago and have never, ever regretted it a single moment. When I got married, my wife had never used a computer, but she latched onto the Apple OS at that time and took off like a duck to water. Now I have to pry the AirMac out of her hands. As I tell others, it's not about the cost--it's about usability and elegance. Apple products work and we have AppleCare at our backs.

Yes, NCMtnMan. As you know, there are several more stable operating systems out there. I smile when there is a discussion of computer architecture...and someone says, "Ya but I can get a 32Gig RAM in my Windows machine." Wonder if they know that the overwhelming need to have 32Gig RAM is because the Windows operating system has become increasingly inefficient (bloated, redundant, superfluous functions, antiquated design, slow). Generally, software updates are just patches. Sorta like putting new bandaids on previous bandaids.

And millions of PC users worldwide, still bow to Microsoft.

Yesterday afternoon I used Windows Update Assistant to upgrade my Windows 10 to the latest version. It took several hours to reach 99% completion and then stopped. Upon googling for a solution, I found a Microsoft message that said this is an issue on some computers. They said you should wait up to a day because it's still working in the background and an error message would appear if there was, in fact, a problem. Still hasn't unstuck. Anyone else experienced this issue?

I seem to already have Wondows 10 version 1803. I've had it for well over a month. I have not noticed any problems. As I recall it did take a while to DL and Install, up to a couple hours. Most of the "new" features I have no interest in using. Perhaps why I had a errorless update was because my computer came with Windows 10 Home installed new from the factory. I have not seem anything weird with my wife's PC either. Hers was a Windows 7 Professional PC upgraded to Windows 10 late during the free Windows 10 period. Now back then I did have problems installing win 10 initially, Microsofts' automated Win 10 installer had a glitch my us anyway. It was not first providing the proper Installer program and it would go through the motions for say 90 minutes and the boot right back up into Windows 7 Pro. I had to have a MS tech on the phone manually start the upgrade procedure. Then everything went fine.

I am sure part of many peoples problems with Win 10 are having a PC that is probably slightly too old for it to run well on. My Dell XPS was new with Win 10 Home, and my wife's Dell Inspiron came with Win 7 Pro but from during the period of Win 8 / 8.1, meaning just before Win 10 Home came out.

I had that happen. Turned out that my Norton antivirus was blocking the last 1%. Temporally turned off the antivirus and problem solved

While I agree, Tomcat....none of this helps the millions of poor PC/Windows users whose machines are stuck at "99%".

I do feel their pain.

What real benefit is there to this endless win 10 update madness? Such non-sense. MS is making life miserable for end users with corrupt, inconsistent, and pointless updates. Auto updating is dangerous and win 10 is worthless to me. I am sticking with Win 7 on all my dozen or so workstations. I make sure auto updating is turned off! No problems and endless screw ups to my computers. I work productively and consistently every day. Could care less that 7 is considered out dated. Hog wash. It works fine...every day...and so do my drivers and 3D CAD and PP and office apps.
Some folks like 10 and the update torture. I see it largely as a scam by MS to control people's computers...sometimes for the better...often for the worse. Just listen to these complaints. Unbelievable what people are letting MS do to them. "Latest version" thinking plays on irrational fears. It does not always mean a better outcome. These excessive MS OS updates are wreaking havoc on people's lives. I am off that merry go round and staying off. I couldn't be happier.
What real benefit is there to this endless win 10 ... (show quote)

Hooray for another honest person! I to still have 3 computers running windows 7 with no problems running ESET Internet Security. I still get threat updates for windows 7. I also have one desktop that I built myself years ago with windows XP Pro 32bit because of some programs that I refuse to give up and a very good stereo and speaker system that does not have drivers for newer operating systems made by Sound Blaster. This speaker system made by Logitech has a center speaker, 4 satellite speakers and a 12 inch sub-woofer that fills the house with very clear sound when playing music. I also have another desktop computer that I built with a dual-boot system consisting of windows xp and windows 7 with no problems. I have 2 laptops with windows 10 and I don't use them very much. I hate having a computer that is trying to look like one of these stupid mobile phones that people can't get their noses out of all day everyday. And I knew the windows 10 automatic, in the background updating system was a bad idea the first time I heard about it. I have not had any problems with updates on either of the windows 10 laptops though, knock on wood. I do not understand why so many people have these nightmare stories about their update problems. I wonder if these people are members of the group that are what are known as not really being computer literate? How many of these people clean the junk files off of their computers on a regular basis. How many of them are really positive that their computers are not infested with virus's and or malware? How many of them have a good sufficient download speed on their internet service? How many of them know they have a sufficient amount of ram in their computer? Every computer should have 2 programs installed, and their owners should know how to run them and make it the last thing they do every night before going to bed. It takes 4 or 5 minutes to run these programs and clean tons of junk files left over on computers everyday from the internet. The programs are CCleaner, and Malwarebytes. They both have free versions and I run them on every computer I own and every computer I build.

If I am completely wrong about computers having so many problems because people really don't know how to take care of them I would be very curious to see some info from this group of people concerning their computers. What are your computers, desktop or laptops? What brand name are your computers? How much ram is in your computer? What is your download speed on your internet connection? How many programs are you attempting to run at the same time you are trying to get updates installed? What CPU is in your computer? These are just some things I can think of right off the top of my head.

Know, before I start getting a bunch of hate mail, stop and think for a minute. Why is that a lot of people never have these problems on their computers, and some people are always having trouble of one kind or another on their computers. There have to be some similarities on the problem computers and their owners. I am just curious, and if some things are discovered, then maybe some folks might be able to eliminate a lot of these problems in the future.

Please post some info if you are having these problems.

If Apple is so great why does 99% of the computers in the world operate on windows? Personal computers and business computers! Just saying.

Because 99% of the users don't know any better. Why do people still buy cars made by GM or Chrysler?

Incidentally, I learned that this was the problem by speaking to a Norton rep on the phone.(after many hours of agony trying to figure it out on my own)

Please stop this nonsense guys. I simply asked about my particular problem with a hung install. It wasn't supposed to open a debate on whether Microsoft is better than Apple.

There are a variety of explanations for this. One thing for sure....not a single Apple user is having any issue with Windows 10.
