Windows 10 upgrades hung up at 99% completion

Yesterday afternoon I used Windows Update Assistant to upgrade my Windows 10 to the latest version. It took several hours to reach 99% completion and then stopped. Upon googling for a solution, I found a Microsoft message that said this is an issue on some computers. They said you should wait up to a day because it's still working in the background and an error message would appear if there was, in fact, a problem. Still hasn't unstuck. Anyone else experienced this issue?

My only experience is that I have it and have not figured out how to undo it. I have switched to a computer with windows 7 & it's ok, but all of my photos are on the stuck computer. I pluged it in yesterday and tried a number of solutions suggested on google sites, didn't get anywhere, going to look for professional help just to get my photos back.

Reboot the system up and try again with the "update".

I can't address your specific issue, but my experience with Windows Update is that 'you just let it run'. It may take a while, but if it is unable to complete the update for some reason, it will eventually throw an error that will contain some trouble-shooting info that can be used to research on the web. I can say that the last 3-4 significant updates have improved the update process dramatically. I'm currently on version 1803.

It can be frustrating, I know, but I've managed to fix every update issue that has come along. However, I haven't had one is the last several months.

Trying doing a System Restore on your computer. It may reverse the W10 update.

Then after, you can try the W10 update again.

Good luck.

Personally I would wait a bit longer. If no change by tomorrow force a shutdown and reboot. And yes, this sort of issue has happened to me before. Very frustrating when is does. Moving forward you need to research and implement a file backup plan. Having all you photos only stored in one place not a good idea. Hard drives fail and its not a matter of if it will fail but when.

It's hard to judge this without knowing the speed (or slowness) of the computer in question. A very slow computer WILL take longer than predicted on one of these painfully long Win10 updates. I have to agree that at some point a forced reboot is the way to go. Hopefully the reboot can clear the error without forcing a full rollback of the update where you would have to go through this same update (and problem) all over again. In that case, it might be a good idea to disable updates until AFTER the next update is released since it is not uncommon for problems to be discovered in an update they have to correct for and re-issue.

Thank God this didn't happen to me. But I can sympathize with you. This is so frustrating.

Beep, Beep, yep mine also hung at 99%. Now have a problem with the computer locking up after about 30 minutes of use. This was my backup drive... that is to say, I backup my C drive and store the original in a drawer. Unfortunately I did not make a snapshot of the 99% drive, restore point, so could only go back to the day the problem occurred, June 21. Now using an older drive which works fine... Lost perhaps 2 months of docs and few free "Give Away of the Day programs." BUT... now "MS - Halloween" wants me to upgrade... "Critical Upgrade"... sure ! I have the upmost confidence in MS upgrades .. NOT

Yes, I have made a restore point on this functioning older drive and will also make a USB restore point. I am thinking that a restore on USB may work as a restore on the problem drive drives were duplicates at one time.

PS: yes when I had the problem I ran Malwarebites, and AVAS virus scan Pre-Boot. The Pre-Boot scan turns up a lot of things that hide in files, corrupt files etc...

I had one that seemed to take forever. Now some users wait for up to a day and you should try this first. In my case I didn't wait that long but decided to reinstall an earlier version from scratch (I didn't have much on this laptop). After 2 days of getting the same problem again plus various mucking around I finally ended up getting a working system but not the latest update 1803. Then I decided to update 5 different drivers before doing the update. This was for a Dell tablet and the 5 drivers all had dates about the time 1803 came out. After the driver updates and MSs 1803 everything came right.
So bottom line is that I suspect some model of laptops/desktops require driver updates BEFORE the 1803 is installed. How you can tell this might be necessary in advance I don't know. I have updated 6 systems so far, 4 went okay, The Dell was a huge can of worms but seems okay now, the jury is still out on one of them (bluetooth issues also a known MS update problem).
If you have not had the update done already I seriously suggest disconnecting from the internet (so that it won't force itself on you), checking for later drivers from the PC/motherboard manf, download them and install on the update candidate, then try 1803.
As you can imagine this is a huge issue as it really means that if you want to be more sure the update will work then 2 billion computer users need to check their drivers first. You CANNOT cross your fingers and just hope the update will work, as it does for most users, although sometimes Microsoft does automatically correct drivers in some cases. But not in others. So far I have had issues with the Dell and an Intel NUC.
Hanging on updating the remainder 4 PCs until I have a spare 8 days in case they turn to custard.

Every time I read about a Windows issue, I thank God I use Apple.

I do feel your pain. Hope it decides to straighten out soon.

What real benefit is there to this endless win 10 update madness? Such non-sense. MS is making life miserable for end users with corrupt, inconsistent, and pointless updates. Auto updating is dangerous and win 10 is worthless to me. I am sticking with Win 7 on all my dozen or so workstations. I make sure auto updating is turned off! No problems and endless screw ups to my computers. I work productively and consistently every day. Could care less that 7 is considered out dated. Hog wash. It works fine...every day...and so do my drivers and 3D CAD and PP and office apps.
Some folks like 10 and the update torture. I see it largely as a scam by MS to control people's computers...sometimes for the better...often for the worse. Just listen to these complaints. Unbelievable what people are letting MS do to them. "Latest version" thinking plays on irrational fears. It does not always mean a better outcome. These excessive MS OS updates are wreaking havoc on people's lives. I am off that merry go round and staying off. I couldn't be happier.

Thanks everyone for your input. The update is still stuck on 99%. I'm going to enlist the help of the person who built my system and see what he can do. Will report further.

Avoid the naysayers who offer no solution but instead take the moment to slam progress in the computer age.

Good luck with help from your technician.
