Personally I would wait a bit longer. If no change by tomorrow force a shutdown and reboot. And yes, this sort of issue has happened to me before. Very frustrating when is does. Moving forward you need to research and implement a file backup plan. Having all you photos only stored in one place not a good idea. Hard drives fail and its not a matter of if it will fail but when.

I second the motion. One thing I would do upon reboot before initiating the update is hook up an external drive and copy over the photo files. (And any other files you may not want to chance losing.) It is a good idea to have copies on different external formats, ie., external hard drives, DVD disks, and the like.

Good luck to the rescues.

My only experience is that I have it and have not figured out how to undo it. I have switched to a computer with windows 7 & it's ok, but all of my photos are on the stuck computer. I pluged it in yesterday and tried a number of solutions suggested on google sites, didn't get anywhere, going to look for professional help just to get my photos back.

I can't address your specific problem, but my computer froze a couple of times during updates. I powered off, waited 30 minutes then powered back up and restarted the upgrade/update. Computer seems to work fine now.

I had trouble with the latest update too. It took many hours and wouldn't finish. A call to microsoft customer service worked well as I let him take control of my computer and he fixed the issue. This was the first time I had an issue with windows 10 and I've had it since it came out and I upgraded from 7.

Yes, I have made a restore point on this functioning older drive and will also make a USB restore point.
I never rely on windows restore points, too unreliable. Macrium Reflect backups work for me. I have both paid versions and free versions (paid allows incrementals, free only differentials). Full backup before a major update. I'm thinking you could mount the backup file on a different computer and use the Reflect explorer like interface to access and recover important files ( e.g. photos). Will have to try that myself.

Thanks everyone for your input. The update is still stuck on 99%. I'm going to enlist the help of the person who built my system and see what he can do. Will report further.

That’s the best idea yet. It must be so infuriating to have this happen...& you’re not the only one. I feel your pain.

You really should have several backups of your pictures and important documents. That’s the FIRST thing I would do once your computer is up and running. Your computer guy can probably retrieve them for you. When I had a PC problem, that’s what my guru did.

After reading this, I’m SO glad I got rid of my PC. I HATED Windows 10...nothing but problems.

Good luck. Hope you get it fixed

That's a good idea Nimbushopper. I'll call them in the morning. It's the first time I've had an issue with W10 as well.

Thanks GrandmaG. This is actually the first problem I've had with W10. My pictures are all backed up on 2 other drives and my system backs up to another drive every night. So I should be OK. I'm going to take Nimbuspusher's advice and call Microsoft in the morning.

I have 2 desktops , 2 laptops and 6 tablets, it took me 2 days to update them, but it takes time, just let it grind away and I had to restart them all several times

Yesterday afternoon I used Windows Update Assistant to upgrade my Windows 10 to the latest version. It took several hours to reach 99% completion and then stopped. Upon googling for a solution, I found a Microsoft message that said this is an issue on some computers. They said you should wait up to a day because it's still working in the background and an error message would appear if there was, in fact, a problem. Still hasn't unstuck. Anyone else experienced this issue?

Contact Windows Support. They ought to have the answers. They were great when I wanted to install Windows 10 on a clean drive. Without their help I would not have known what to do...

My biggest issues are their upgrades. They tend to orphan the previous Windows directory and consume a large portion of hard drive space even after the 10 day period has expired and the windows.old has been removed. In previous versions of Windows you mostly had updates opposing upgrades. Also some programs refuse to run or open even after attempting a reinstall. The only versions of Windows 10 that require minimal upgrading is their LTSB versions which are reserved for software developers essentially bare-boned.

For many the upgrades go unnoticed but I have a very low powered Windows tablet that virtually becomes unusable after every 6 month upgrade installment.

gene51, where are you? He's a PC guy and perhaps he can help you, unless he's too busy checking out specs and doing comparisons to bash Apple products.....

Avoid the naysayers who offer no solution but instead take the moment to slam progress in the computer age.

Good luck with help from your technician.

And, you consider Microsoft products progress?

If this were an isolated situation, I would understand. Based on the several similar complaints from users on this site, it appears not to be an isolated situation at all.

In today's "computer age"....this is inexcusable!

How many PC computers in the world would you guess are stalled at "99%" right now?

Progress? NOT

I've been in IT for over 30 years and this is why I refuse to move to Windows 10. These forced OS upgrades are killing systems right and left. If MS doesn't change things so you can select whether you want the upgrade, I may do like many others and switch to some other OS.
