Chris,
You are are West Coast guy. Just jump on a flight to Bangkok. All the major photo shops (Big Camera, Fotofile, World Camera, etc.) have one in stock. Latest price I got just last week was 115,000 Thai baht - about US$3,600. A slight premium for jumping the queue! Plus you can shoot plenty of exotic photos to break it in!

Before anyone panics, yes it's not a US designed camera...but I've had plenty of Japanese SLRs & DSLRs. Never had a warranty problem, so the odds are with you! Just sayin'.

PM me and we'll pick you up at the airport! 😊
Honest! Cheers, Don

And how much will a round trip ticket cost to travel to Thailand? Plus, you are paying $300 more than the USA market price. And worst, a gray market purchase without a USA warranty.

I would place an order with B&H and Adorama and whichever one gets them first is yours and cancel the other.

If you really want one, that is a good idea.

If you look at the history of D850 availability over the past several months, you'll see that B&H deliveries have been running roughly 3 to 5 weeks behind Amazon and Adorama for several months now, based on order placement date. As pointed out, last week Amazon was filling orders placed May 16, Adorama was filling orders placed on May 1 and B&H was filling orders placed on April 14. Three weeks prior to that, it looked like Amazon was filling orders placed April 28th, Adorama was filling orders placed April 16th and B&H filling orders placed April 12. That would seem that over the three week period, Amazon filled 20 days worth of backorders, Adorama filled 17 days of backorders and B&H only 2 days of backorders. I wonder if that is because so many more people have been ordering from B&H so there is a bigger backlog with them, or B&H orders to and shipments from Nikon are for considerably fewer cameras than the other dealers

I am very interested in getting a D850. I have a D610 but I am frustrated by the continuous auto focus to not capture the focus on birds in flight, motor sports and soccer more than 60-75% of the time. However, no one seems to have them in stock. Do you think the back log of orders will be gone by August? I want to shoot motor sports in September and would like to have the new camera by then. I am wondering if it is a Nikon production problem or a demand outstripping supply flow? Both?
Thanks

Service Camera in Baltimore seems to get them quick. I was planning on getting one in March so I got on their waiting list in January along with B&H, A week later Service Camera sent me an email saying they had a D850 for me. I purchased it and did some comparisons to my D810. The main things that stood out besides improved auto focus speed and file size was the greatly improved auto white balance, no more yellow/greenish cast, just clean neutral colors under any light source. I never liked the skin tones from past Nikons compared to Canon, but the D850 and D500 finally get it right.

The D 850 and the accessories are far to expensive for me. That technology is for pros and GAS people. Do you really need all that or just want it? Poll your logical minf, not your heart.

Perhaps the world market is a bit larger than the US market. They are all made by Nikon or authorized manufacturers. Is it the product or the warranty that concerns you?

Take Nikon at their word - If you buy a grey market D850 and ever need Nikon service in the U.S.; you are boned.
You are just going to have to "gut-out" the wait-list on it. In the meantime, muddle along with what you have. Don't waste any opportunity to shoot, pining away the days in the meantime.
I was in Hunt's Camera the other day and in speaking with the salesman, he said they are filling backorders in 6 to 8 weeks from the order date.

Try Henry's in Canada here they may be grey market , but in Canada they aren't they may be in stock there , the Nikon warranty station in Canada is just across the border , and they accept warranty from U.S.A. purchased in Canada , it is in Henry's advertisements....

Nothing wrong with wanting, and spending money on whatever makes one happy. Logic doesn't always apply in matters of the heart.

Have you looked at the D500? I use it with the 200-500 for my bird photography with excellent results.

Went on a cruise to St. Thomas with friends in April. My buddy bought one from the big camera seller there. Pretty good price and a lot of extras.

Love my D500.

For birds and outdoor sports the advantages of a D850 over a D500 are minimal and the D850 is substantially heavier. Plus the D500 goes higher in fps.

If you want to buy a camera overseas and get Nikon USA service there is a way to do it. You need documentation that you were travelling or on vacation in the foreign country. You need to keep your air flight documentation and your hotel receipts and present them when you request warranty or out of warranty service. It's possible though that too short a stay could arouse suspicion.

My impression is - it's a series of technical problems. I ordered my D850 in August 2017. Waited for it 2 months to come and then - it seems to have bunch of electrinics problems. I'm dealing now with Adorama about options and warranty fixes. Heard stories from other about focus problems. I think this is what causes delays in shipping.

Why not go directly to Nikon?

The 610 is still a terrible camera but there was a lot of very helpful advice to getting the darn thing to work better.

You'd spend $2000 on a terrible camera?
