No it's not. I do not consider fixed setting cameras automatic. An automatic camera must make all the settings needed but automatically. For the pin hole you do have control of the exposure time.
And if all you want is a pinhole camera - then go for it - and leave the rest of us alone. And that is exactly what fully automatic cameras are - fixed settings. You have no control.

Know your camera. Know your lens.

Do most people here really use manual? I would love to see data behind that statement.

99.9% of the time I use full manual. Lately, for sports pics, I am using auto ISO. It has helped my keeper rate. But, sometimes I do switch to AUTO if the pics start coming out dark.
I usually go over my failures and try to understand what went wrong.
I will say this, if one shoots in AUTO all the time, you will not be learning anything. It won't make you a better photographer. I am in a camera club and there are those that want to become better. There are also those that don't care to become better. Those are the ones who shoot AUTO all the time.

I do. And the manual for the Olympus E-M1mrII is more complex than my previous E-M5. I am just now going through it for the second time. And to make sure I don't miss a trick this time, I am ordering a supplementary book. The Olympus E-M1mrII is all about control even though I use it mostly in Program mode. It is for the times that I know Program mode will not quite cut it, and even one of the other modes will need modification, that one needs to know their camera.

In the long run, it makes for intriguing discussions and viewpoints, but (and what a BIG butt it is (wink) ) otherwise, it doesn't really matter on the final image created...
IF the objective is an emotionally moving image that works... does it matter...? ... much like getting from home to work, does it really matter if one drives a stick or an automatic...? drives one's own car or takes a bus...? the final objective is the primary factor in photography ... not so much the means of getting to the end.
Now, are there techniques for producing a certain image that might work better under certain circumstances than others... certainly... is a carpenter who can use every tool in his box effectively better able to get better paying jobs and raving referrals... most certainly...
Regardless of the camera in one's hands, it just stands to reason that the more familiar one is with every function at his/her disposal, the better s/he will be at producing the image s/he intends .. not just simply the one s/he likes the best... as to announce that every image captured is a complete surprise... (grin)
