I'd take the 24-70. To still stay light consider a 1.4X or 2X teleconverter. Pocket size yet would help with some outdoor shots.

I agree with stupar935. I do not own a 24-70 and cannot comment but do use the 28-300 on a D800 extensively. For my purposes doing railroad and travel photography it is my best option. RR work requires super zoom range to deal with legal issues of avoiding trespassing. That lens super zoom is also very useful for isolating street photo or other travel subjects. In low light I increase ISO or use my Nikon 50mm f1.4. I deal with poorer quality bokeh by finding neutral backdrops. Others have solutions that work for them. I find the 28-300 very sharp except at extreme ends of its range but the d800 sensor is terrific and you can crop in as needed.

Will be on a cruise from London to Iceland with stops in Wales, Ireland and Scotland. Iceland will be new for me and we have 4 stoops there. Due to many factors, I will take minimal gear. I have a choice of my 24-70 or my 70-200. If you had to choose, which would you think most important for the Iceland portion of the trip?

If you are planning on taking pictures of the shore points from the ship to the shore, I'd opt for the 70-200, but if you are off the ship the 24-70 will probably cover the ranges you will mostly want. Can't you hide the 70-200 in some piece of luggage? I've used a 70-300 with a crop sensor camera and wished I'd had more reach.

Enjoy the trip, it sounds great!

Another thought: Being a lens junkie I have over thirty lenses. We travel the world a lot. I have found the Sigma 18-250 is the lens for traveling. Fairly compact and not very heavy. I also have a Sigma 19-300 but it is very heavy and larger in diameter. If the sensor on your camera is an APS-C the effective range of the 18-250 is really 27-375. I also always carry a 50mm f1.7 and a Sigma 10-20. I almost can't remember what they look like. The 18-250 never comes off the camera. Have fun on your trip.

It still comes down to what you like to shoot. There is a bit of a bias on this forum (not bad but just there) in favor of scenery. If you like scenery and more close in shots then the 24-70 will be the best for you. However, if you like subjects, wildlife and features you may do better with the 70-200. But I'd always start with thinking about what types of pictures you'd like to bring home. It's a tough choice but I also have to keep my equipment to one lens when I travel which is why I use the Tamron 18-400--but I do give up just a bit in IQ so you have to consider that too.

Irm- I will be on the same cruise. Tell me your name and I will look for you on the boat. My name is Linc Kinnicutt. For what it is worth, I will bring a 24-70 equivalent, 28-280 equivalent and a fairly light telephoto for occasional wildlife or birds off the boat.

See you.

Maybe you can share lenses? But then again, you will probably need the same lens at the same time since you would be in the same conditions.

What do you recommend once the front element of the extender and the rear element of the lens crunch against each other? Guess carrying one lens won't work out to well if that happens.

The 24-70. You will want a wide angle lens, possibly wider than 24.

For those who do not know, Nikons telecoverter will not mount on their 24-70 lens. there is a short list of compatible lenses on their web site.
