I certainly don't get it, but I'm sure that you are about to bitch at me about the old school stuff.

I liked the camera so well that I bought a second. Let the sentimental technology thoughts fly ... He went that away ===>

If you know an f stop from a bus stop, you don't need to ask that question. If you don't know a bus stop from an f stop, then I guess you need the fancy technology to do your thinking for you. But that's ok with me. What ever turns you on.

Jon the funny part of that is if his P & S is a fairly advanced model it probably has all the manual settings. He just may know the difference. I assume since you eschew technology you not only still use a light meter, wouldn't own a camera or lens with
auto focus and probably still drive a car with a stick shift and an armstrong starter located under the radiator.

Amusing. None of the above and I do have a desk top and two lap top computers. Didn't say that I eschew technology. I just thought I was making an obnoxious rejoinder for an obnoxious starter comment.

I "drag it around" because I make use of it. And know how to use it. Not to mention the fact I paid for it even though I buy used and save a lot of $$$$$$. If you're happy with your camera GREAT. But don't criticize those of us who choose to use a couple of DSLR bodies and several lenses. There is a reason and it's not to show off. BTW I like the avatar. Isn't that from an ELP album cover or very similar to it? Seems like a remember the album name and illustration. Now I'm showing my age!

SLR Photography is definitely for those who like expensive toys. I admit, I love the feeling of getting a new lens, camera, tripod, etc. Usually though the feeling goes away sooner than I'd like and I'm sitting there with something I really didn't need. If I'm honest with myself I have all I NEED for photography. I'd like all L series lenses for my camera but I'm not that rich yet. And honestly, I can almost, and I stress almost, get the same results as an L lens with my current lenses, I just need a little post processing to get there. Photography gives me the creative medium I need for the artist in me. I can't paint or draw worth a dam, I've tried. I spend hours and hours thinking about a shot, when I should go for the best lighting, the different points of view, what can I do to make the shot even better, filters, tripods, angles of shots, black n white, color, depth of field, shutter speed, on and on and on. So, in a nut shell photography gives me both, a creative output for the artist in me and the feeling of a kid at Christmas when I get a new (toy). Can anyone relate?

Well i use to use a p&s and there is no comparison to my dslr. I LOVE my camera and the lenses give you so much more flexibility to shoot what you want. If you need to ask you are definitely NOT into photography like most of us on this site. Cheers!

So are you saying you believe cameras such as Canon's
5D MK III and 1D X, or Nikon's D 800 do not utilize "advanced electronics", and should be considered "old school stuff" and sentimental technology?!?

No knowledgable, clear thinking individual could possibly make statements like that and hope to be taken seriously.

But to offer an answer to any reasonable portion of your question "Why Do You Drag Around Expensive Photo Gear?"... well a lot depends on what you shoot.

If you mainly shoot kids in the backyard, photos of your pets, vacation snaps, scenics, birthday parties and other similar situations, then a P&S will likely be fine for most of those.

If however you shoot action such as sports or wildlife (as I do) then a P&S is just not going to cut it.

Will your "advanced electronics" little Sony get these shots I've posted here?
Maybe, but probably not.

In any case since you have never posted *any* photos here you have taken recently, we have no way to know if you are any good and know what you are doing, and you are in no position to criticize other photographer's choice in gear.
So are you saying you believe cameras such as Cano... (show quote)

Personally, I'm thinking about trading in my Canon 7D and 5DMKII along with my Sony NEXs and all the lenses, flashes, etc. I hear next year's models will have advanced electronics AND indoor plumbing!

We lug around heavy, expensive equipment because we like to impress others. My 400mm atop Mount Scott in Oklahoma drew a crowd. I also feel very important when I am not allowed to use my camera where there is a rule against "big," or "professional" cameras. I lost a great shot opportunity that way when my cameras were not allowed atop the tallest building in Mexico City. What's a good shot compared to being recognized for having top notch gear?

Well, you know, if we looked into our hearts, what you say in jest could very well be the case. You are speaking in jest, aren't you?

This photography group - like many other groups I have belonged to such as Fly Fishing, Sailing, Scuba & 4X4's have the hobby/amateur, serious minded, very serious and then the fanatics.
All have their following and like minded members. I have no trouble at all with any of the above EXCEPT when the "very serious & Fanatics" look upon us others as ignorant, not up to par - or qualified to call ourselves - as in this group - photographers.

In order to get to be in the three upper categories it takes one heck of a lot of interest, time, determination, MONEY, - lack of any of these and we stay in the back of the pack but still in the race.

One of these days I may be fortunate enough to have a decent DSLR - but I know lots of people who envy my Lumix FZ18 bridge camera also.

I have a canon G10 point and shoot as well but the one thing which is the biggest problem with point and shoots is the shutter lag. You can never get the shot because once the shutter has tripped youve missed that moment in time and it is only very rarely that you can get the shot with a point and shoot. I could never use a point and shoot for a wedding or even in the studio you just wouldnt get the quality and the way you can throw a background totally out of focus with a long lens you cant do with a point and shoot. Theres nothing like holding a heavy quality camera in your hands and I believe it results in better images. The builder doesnt use inferior tools to build a house he uses the best he can get. He has pride in his work like all photographers with heavey equipment they have pride in their image making. Not to say you wont take some great images with your point and shoot but saying it is very limited to what you can do with it. Happy shooting

If this guy is a troll and I expect he is I want him to teach me how to fish. 13 pages of much ado about nothing and I was right in the middle of it. It was fun at any rate.
