This is the kind of statement that is soooooo off base it is not funny - # 1 who in their right mind - other than a guest would bring a P&S to a wedding or a studio- DAaaa
Yes P&S and "some" bridge cameras have "Some" shutter lag but not the higher end or latest ones. Forget the rest of the put down as it is mute. As for the "Heaviness" of a quality camera - that too goes as far as one wants to carry a heavy camera - weight does not always mean quality. And as for builder "ONLY" using the "BEST" tools - that is about as far from the facts as one can get. Again a crafts man with a "Kit" of Harbor Freight tools can do as good a job as a crafts man with DeWalts.
A whole lot of contempt for the lesser tools in both fields.

I have a canon G10 point and shoot as well but the one thing which is the biggest problem with point and shoots is the shutter lag. You can never get the shot because once the shutter has tripped youve missed that moment in time and it is only very rarely that you can get the shot with a point and shoot. I could never use a point and shoot for a wedding or even in the studio you just wouldnt get the quality and the way you can throw a background totally out of focus with a long lens you cant do with a point and shoot. Theres nothing like holding a heavy quality camera in your hands and I believe it results in better images. The builder doesnt use inferior tools to build a house he uses the best he can get. He has pride in his work like all photographers with heavey equipment they have pride in their image making. Not to say you wont take some great images with your point and shoot but saying it is very limited to what you can do with it. Happy shooting

If nothing else, it gave us all a chance to consider just why we do the things we do. Introspection is good! :)

Bunch of bloody photographers! (And yes I am one.)

In June I was travelling through the Rockies, and one of my "have to" stops to take a picture is Peyto Lake. There is a cut off to a parking lot just off the highest point of the road that runs from Lake Louise to Jasper, and I have the driver pull over. I say, I will be about 15 minutes, because the book I read said from the parking lot it is a couple of minute walk down a trail to the best vantage point.

What I did not take into account was that where I pulled off was the lower parking lot, and the road that led to the upper parking lot was still knee deep in snow, (even though it was about 65 F out.) So I start humping my sorry but up the road, and I am sweating like a pig carrying my DSLR and two lenses. I get about 100 meters from the upper parking lot, (after about 25 minutes of walking through soggy snow in my street shoes), and I encounter a photographer heading back. I ask, how far too go, and was it worth it. He says another 5 minutes, and yeah it is worth it. I finish my trek, get to the lookout point and what do I find? About 8 photographers, and they are all grinning like Chesser Cats. Yeah, it was worth it. But we are all fruitloops to go through that much for a photo, and I know that each of us poor insane addicts would do it again in a heartbeat.

quick and dirty post-process of Peyto Lake

Yep - - why hang out with a 70-200 f/4 when you can REALLY strut your stuff with the 70-200 f/2.8 L IS ??
-
You all know this is crazy - - I checked in yesterday at about 10PM - and by this afternoon - we were up from 4 pages now to 14. Pretty bonkers - twerpkus has gotta be laughing - - of course, since it hasn't been back since the OP, likely it hasn't a clue {no - - lets make that 'Definitely' hasn't a clue}.
-
In the immortal words of Ferris Bueller: You're still here? It's over. Go home. Go.
-
OBTW - I saw EL&P - - I coulda sworn it was in Brooklyn Battery Park around '68 or '69 - amazing show

So are you saying you believe cameras such as Canon's
5D MK III and 1D X, or Nikon's D 800 do not utilize "advanced electronics", and should be considered "old school stuff" and sentimental technology?!?

No knowledgable, clear thinking individual could possibly make statements like that and hope to be taken seriously.

But to offer an answer to any reasonable portion of your question "Why Do You Drag Around Expensive Photo Gear?"... well a lot depends on what you shoot.

If you mainly shoot kids in the backyard, photos of your pets, vacation snaps, scenics, birthday parties and other similar situations, then a P&S will likely be fine for most of those.

If however you shoot action such as sports or wildlife (as I do) then a P&S is just not going to cut it.

Will your "advanced electronics" little Sony get these shots I've posted here?
Maybe, but probably not.

In any case since you have never posted *any* photos here you have taken recently, we have no way to know if you are any good and know what you are doing, and you are in no position to criticize other photographer's choice in gear.

Without any doubt, your eagle image is the best I have ever seen.

BTW, I concur with all of your comments.

I will add that I also carry a large tripod (supports 31 pounds), a mini-tripod and a bean bag monopod. In addition, when I am hiking a GPS, phone and a couple of safety tools otherwise known as weapons.

Lots of posturing going on here. My opinion is the best camera is the one that you have with you whether its a P&S or an SLR. Have we all become snobs and look down on our fellow photogs. The idea is to learn, have fun, and be friendly and helpful.

His gear must be insured, dunno about him. I count 5 cameras (not counting any P&S's he may have have tucked away in his pockets), $40,000+ on the hoof, and tons of determination / enthusiasm. He's young, totally committed, strong, probably tireless...and prepared for anything. It must be a great feeling :)

You must be a bear for punishment. Sounds more like Marine boot camp than a photo shoot. You are more of a man than I ever was.
