how to sell expensive camera bodies and lenses.
I have sold computers, TV's, trains, expensive bikes, and recently my T5i on Craigslist. You will have some who will offer extra money from what you asked if you ship somewhere to a friend or relative. Don't accept PayPal, or any other method that isn't cash!
The best way to avoid a scam is to require cash only and meet them at a coffee shop or some other business where there are a lot of people.
Good luck

Over the years i have succomed to GAS attacks and swore I'd sell my older equipment to help pay for the new purchases...well, I have found that I am much better at buying stuff than selling it. I am wary of Craig's List, Ebay, and Amazon because the equipment is high end and I am afraid of being ripped off by a variety if scams. The other side of the equation is I could take it to a local photo store and get peanuts for the stuff. Has anyone found a way that works for them? If it were only a couple of hundred bucks, that's one thing, but several thousand bucks is another in my situation. Thanks for all thoughtful replies (no, I can't afford to start a museum!)

You have buyers protection on Ebay. Yes, there will always be those that pray on others, but if you are not happy in any way you can report anything you are not happy about to ebay administration if you cannot resolve it with the seller. I have bought and sold off ebay for over 13 years and have been happy. Yes, I have run into bad buyers, but ebay protects both buyers and sellers equally. It is quite safe but just like everywhere else, "Trust but verify". I get top dollar from my used equipment, on the average I get 50-75% more off ebay than I would by trading the equipment in. For me, that is a plus because I have GAS on a daily basis. So, I buy MINT, in the box off ebay, I use the equipment for a while, if I tire of something I sell it on ebay and loose LITTLE. Try it, like me, you will like it. You have a 10-15 day period after you get your product to return it with no questions asked, you simply say it is not quite what you were looking for and return it to the seller, if it was not as advertised, you are out nothing when you return it. You can go the the Ebay site and read in detail their return policy. I have had, out of over 850 transactions, that I have had to work with administration only once, all other problems were handled by working directly with the buyer or as a seller.

I have pretty much bought and sold on ebay and CL with wonderful results. On ebay the funds are transferred to your PayPal account prior to shipping the article. If you are honest and forthright in your item description with plenty of photos of the item, you should have not a problem what so ever in selling. Granted, the ebay fees are there, but I have found I still made out much better that offers from online re sellers. On CL I have always met in the lobby of my bank and when the deal was concluded either withdrew or deposited the money immediately, plus the fact you can test drive, or the purchaser can test/inspect the gear prior to purchasing. On CL it is a face to face cash deal with no fees.
I have sold a few things through B&H. Fair price easy to deal with and quick cash. I have also bought used through them. Not a problem so far
No matter which site, meet the buyer at your police or sheriff's office parking lot or inside the lobby.

eBay *always* favors the buyer over the seller. You can read many complaints about this on various forums.

I have sold equipement to B&H, Adorama, and KEH. All with no problems!
I have always used Craig's List but we live in a rural area so not very many of the "phonies" and "Scammers" around but still must be careful. I but and sell a few times each year and if necessary I meet the buyer or seller at the local PD for both's protection. Just my experience.

Reality Check...camera gear is not an investment. Either endure the challenges of finding that perfect buyer or sell it to a camera store risk free for a fraction of what you originally paid. Do the work and take the risks or get burned; your choice.
You really do not want to selling anything. You give reasons about Craig's and Amazon. Don't blame anyone but yourself. You did it.
I use craigslist cash only and at a safe location all the people I dealt with where great and if they don't want to meet or what to use other type of payment I ignore. Sold camera equipment, car and a boat
After reading people reply I think the best ways to do it is sell the camera by UHH.
Have used Kijiji several times in Canada. Use same precautions as with Craig's list in US.
