how to sell expensive camera bodies and lenses.

Over the years i have succomed to GAS attacks and swore I'd sell my older equipment to help pay for the new purchases...well, I have found that I am much better at buying stuff than selling it. I am wary of Craig's List, Ebay, and Amazon because the equipment is high end and I am afraid of being ripped off by a variety if scams. The other side of the equation is I could take it to a local photo store and get peanuts for the stuff. Has anyone found a way that works for them? If it were only a couple of hundred bucks, that's one thing, but several thousand bucks is another in my situation. Thanks for all thoughtful replies (no, I can't afford to start a museum!)

Okay, this is what I have done over the past 10 years. I have tried ebay and the fee's are ridiculous. I would stay away from craigslist for sure.
Personally, I have sold some high end equipment and I use http://www.fredmiranda.com , http://www.nikonians.org and http://www.uglyhedgehog.com
I have never had a problem with any of the last three and have purchased on these sites as well. I have never bought a brand new lens or camera, period. All have been purchased or sold in pristine shape. Nikonians will require a yearly subscription, as well as fredmiranda.
The last being my go to site as thousands visit this site weekly and there are some great buys and more important, good feedback from other buyers or sellers. It's not rocket science and I would never bring anything into a camera store. They are in the resell business and you won't get what your equipment is even close too. Just my humble opinion.

I have sold to KEH, they give you a price based upon what you tell them re: condition, no obligation.

I have been able to sell Canon bodies and L lenses on Craigslist. At one point I sold 1 body and 2 lenses to the same customer. It all depends on finding a willing buyer who wants what you sell. Good luck.

I buy and sell on CL all the time. Some cities have set up a buying and selling site for CL shoppers. I have always met in a public place and have always spoken over the phone to the person so I could hear their voice. Good luck.

I have had success selling several cameras and lenses right here on UHH. Actually, it's my preferred spot. You can get a good idea of what the buyer is like from how long they have belonged to the site and by reading some of their postings, as well as from the transaction (feedback) ratings, if present. Granted, the number of possible buyers is limited compared to other sites.
Just a tip on setting price:
I use the on-line calculator at sites like B&H and Adorama to see what they would give me for the item. Then I check their used price for it and set my price about in the middle, since I'm not offering a written warranty as they do.

Why not take good photos of the gear, decide on your price, and list it here? Then move down the list as necessary if it doesn't sell. I suspect you will have a pocket full of money to give to your camera store owner by this weekend....

I said that selling camera via UHH is a safe way to do it. People that use UHH are camera people, so you would be dealing with just camera people. Point of using e-bay, I have no problem buy off e-bay, I never use to sell something. As for craigslist put down local pick up only, have them come to you. pay by cash only. Just put down your tel# only. YES, post pictures if you can. Just asking what high end cameras do you have for sale?
