Over the years i have succomed to GAS attacks and swore I'd sell my older equipment to help pay for the new purchases...well, I have found that I am much better at buying stuff than selling it. I am wary of Craig's List, Ebay, and Amazon because the equipment is high end and I am afraid of being ripped off by a variety if scams. The other side of the equation is I could take it to a local photo store and get peanuts for the stuff. Has anyone found a way that works for them? If it were only a couple of hundred bucks, that's one thing, but several thousand bucks is another in my situation. Thanks for all thoughtful replies (no, I can't afford to start a museum!)

Out of the suggestions made by everyone so far, you're going to find both legitimate people and shysters on any venue you choose to sell your equipment...even here on UHH. That said, you're more than likely to find a higher percentage of agreeable buyers on UHH than the others. Another good place you can try would be a photography club in your local area. Try a Google search for that OR you can expand your search for clubs by going to www.meetup.com. All you have to do is create a simple account for it (name and email address) and then do a search on its site. In its search bar, type in "photography" and then change the mile radius (default is 5 miles) of your zip code to 10, 15, 20, etc. A dropdown box will appear so you simply click on "photography" again and instantly you'll get a list of all the clubs within the parameters you set. The point is, all this will take you less than 1 minute to do and you'll suddenly have a rich resource of other camera people who are less likely to try and swindle you. Besides that, you might find a club that really interests you that's good enough to join! Try it.

Craiglist 'can' be a good place, if you set up a safe meeting place to do the deal. Many police stations welcome providing a safe spot to make the sale. Check with your local law enforcement agency to see if they do this. Can't get much safer than that.

I've used craiglist and eBay (I admit, mostly to buy, but I have sold a few items) and encountered no issues. As others have said, you need to factor the eBay fees into the price you set.

Depending on your gear, try specific forums such as Fuji, Pentax or Nikon (etc) member sale sites. It's also a good place to look for equipment. I avoid Craigslist but Ebay works well for me listed as a Buy It Now or Best Offer listing. If I am selling via forums I price my stuff 10-12% less than completed sales from Ebay since there is no fee. I try to buy cameras and lenses new when on sale or incentives offered. Lately I have been buying used lenses when I can find what I want. I have never bought refurbished or reconditioned although many on UHH swear by it- I just don't feel good about buying equipment that has had a problem to begin with (yes I know that it has been inspected and repaired if necessary).

I buy and sell on CL all the time. Some cities have set up a buying and selling site for CL shoppers. I have always met in a public place and have always spoken over the phone to the person so I could hear their voice. Good luck.

Another possibility is to meet at the local police station, or at least their parking lot. And need I say, cash only.

For a large cash payment from Craigslist, I would have the bank check the bills for authenticity or buy a device yourself.

You should try sites like B&H Photo, they generally give good prices for used gear, no obligation. You can go on the site and get a quote by simply inputting the gear you have. The price is just a quote, if you decide to use them, they will pay for the shipping and then review the gear, but if you cannot agree on a price, they will ship it back to you free of charge

I have also used Ebay with good success, but usually for selling only, I don't like buying gear that I cannot see and handle first

I don't have issues with sites like Craigslist, I have bought and sold using this site for many years and never had any problems. You just have to use a little common sense and caution on when and where you meet a perspective buyer. I usually meet at a local Starbucks, there's plenty of the them around...

eBay *always* favors the buyer over the seller. You can read many complaints about this on various forums.

Sorry, it's the other way around, the buyer is always right, he can return any item and claim it isn't as described and PayPal will return the money. EBay will be going from 14 days return to 30 days, so if someone needs a lens for a trip to Yellowstone he can buy it use it and after 30 days return it as item is nor as described, he gets his money back plus the shipping cost, beats renting a lens anytime. Those that favor the seller?

I have sold four cameras with lenses and purchased a Canon 100-400 4.0 lens from KEH. They value used equipment fairly and the lens is just like new. Absolutely no complaints! You will be able to get a price range for similar equipment based on industry's standard ranking system using their ranking. A side note; the U.S. Postal Service saved me from a fraudulent sale on eBay and loosing a camera. The crooks are very very good for what it is worth department. Good luck with your sale./George

I just sold 6K in gear on ebay. It took a couple of weeks and I think their were 6 items. Yes they get 10% in this case It was 7% promotion they offered.
I put 2 camera bodies on ebay and they immediately got looks. I got $1300 for the original Sony a7s. almost $400 for a 1980's mirrored 500mm Nikon.
I have a 100% seller rating make sure the gear is working and clean and pack it well. Answer questions about gear even if a little silly.
Watch out on ebay for quick generous offers from very new members with no record of buying or selling. They are phonies looking to get
your PayPal (what I use) or a way to pay to get some personal information they can sell. Sometimes a to high bid blocks out other bids.
Might be folks who are working together. I sold to a couple who drove me crazy sent and extra battery etc and they were happy.
You can sell internationally I tend to stay in US. US Priority mail is cheap and you can insure to $1000 very cheaply.
As far as I know there is nothing with the pull and lookers/buyers like ebay. Their are a lot of folks buying a selling for a little profit.
If you receive a buy wait for money to clear. And be careful. The first camera I sold years ago on ebay was a Nikon D800.
Got email PayPal notice it was paid for and it was a phony shipped the camera and it was lost where it was received. Neither
the police in AZ or UPS or my State Farm Insurance would cover for this crime. So if you are not sure don't ship. Good luck.

I have twice bought camera lenses from a Craigslist seller.

(1) Searched regularly until I found the lens I wanted within convenient driving distance. This required a lot of patience.
(2) Contacted seller and arranged to meet seller at a Public place, e.g., Starbucks, for me to examine and test lens. I informed seller that if the lens was acceptable to me that I would make an offer.
(3) Used Adorama, B&H and KEH as a general guide for used Nikkor lens prices. Did research to learn about that lens. In one case I used a friend's lens of the same model for a few hours.
(4) Met seller and examined equipment. Put lens on my Camera body and tested function.
(5) Walked around outside Starbucks with seller, taking photos in variety of conditions, as practical.
(6) Back inside Starbucks transferred images to my Laptop and examined quality, comparing to images taken with friend's lens (that I'd previously saved to laptop.)
(7) When satisfied with the lens I made an offer. Seller and I negotiated and compromised on what I considered a fair price. I asked the seller to fill out a bill of sale and we each kept a copy.

Last year I bought a Nikkor 10-24mm DX lens (like new condition in the original Nikon box) for $450.

Yep, I just bought a 24-120mm Nikon lens last Sunday from a guy advertising on Craigslist. I met him at a Starbucks, tested the lens on my camera and the bought it. Paid $500.00, good deal, most of the time these lenses go for $650 to $750. He had upgraded to the much better 24-70mm and just wanted to sell the lens. There are some good deals out there, you just have to be patient.

I've used them all and for the most part am satisfied with them all - having realistic expectations being very important. The very best experience of selling a considerable amount of high end Canon gear came right here through the Hog with MT Shooter. I found MT's prices more than fair and better than any of the other vendors mentioned. He was a pleasure to work with and best of all I took a long weekend and drove 600 miles each way to go to his store in Montana, it was much fun. Obviously most people won't be able to drive to the store to deliver the goods but he'll probably work something out regarding shipping if what you have is what he needs. No, I'm not a relative or getting paid to say nice things about MT. I'm just a satisfied customer that sold his gear in a more non-traditional way that what goes on now days. Novots.
