We have two 2015 Honda Fits that will be covered for another month. After that, I will have to select a company for a roadside assistance contract. I know from past experience that all the plans use the same local towing companies, so that's not a deciding factor. Any opinions on good or bad plans or options?

Better World Club is an eco minded organization that does towing of both automobiles and bicycles. I use them for my trikes. They will drive me and the trike to wherever I ask, like back to my car or back to my house. I would not even try to change a tire on the trike although I used to be able to do it on a diamond frame.

Last Fall, driving in the mountains of AZ near the New Mexico border, I rounded a corner at speed, hit rocks in the road and shredded the sidewall of the left front tire on my XK8. Had to keep driving for 1/2 mile or so to find a flat area but couldn't budge one lug nut. Also couldn't reach my insurance coverage so I called AAA and joined on the spot. The woman truck operator and her son changed the tire, checked pressure on all tires and crawled under the car (not that easy) to make sure there was no other damage. Then followed me back to town 30 miles away at fairly low speed since I was driving on a donut. AAA has my vote.

Ah, yes, but I don't spend much time as a passenger. Maybe I should hire a AAA member to ride with me.

Just a note on AAA, for new customers.

Years ago, I had AAA Plus, but unemployment hit, and I couldn't afford to keep the coverage.

A few weeks ago, I called AAA to subscribe again. You can't pay the extra fee and get AAA Plus right out of the starting gate. You have to be a member in good standing with 3 or less service calls in that first year, before you can upgrade.

For the base plan, you basically only get 5 miles of free towing, and jumping service. Lock-out service and extended distance towing are part of the "Plus" package.

Make sure that you do your homework to find out what services are covered in your first year of coverage, and what services might be added after your first year of coverage no matter which roadside assistance plan you choose.

What are the requirements, if any, to join Good Sam? I'll have to look into them. My aunt and uncle were members of Good Sam for years, because they camped with their 5th wheel trailer with club members.

They also give you life insurance.

So if I'm in a really, really bad wreck, they pay my life insurance and tow the car away. Fantastic!

Have you tried the new and improved hefty harness for seniors? It allows you to hook two straps to the tie down points. It along with about three months on the horizontal leg press should do the trick and allow you to self tow!

I have been a AAA member for over 50 years, and have gotten my money's worth in roadside service and towing. And especially during the period when I would buy used high mileage BMW's. One advantage of being a AAA member is you can use the card even if you are with someone else in their car.

Thanks! Do you have a link for that? I was going to get one of these, but it wouldn't fit into my car.

Thanks. A friend buys only older BMWs (Series 3, I think), puts them back in shape and drives them as long as he can. He has a decent supply of parts accumulated.

I was a AAA+ member for 20yrs and had an occasion to use them twice in the past few years. Once in downtown Tampa when a radiator hose blew(their vendor took 1.5hrs to respond) and again When I got a blowout on interstate 4 between Tampa and Orlando in a storm. AAA said 45 min response. After 1.5 hrs I called again, they said 45 more min. After another hr when the rain stopped I changed the tire myself and quit AAA! Now my insurance covers both my cars for about$25 a year!

I don't think I'd blame that on AAA. Any company can drop the ball now and then.

Jerry, I can't say enough good about AAA.

I had National Motor Club for years and used it once. I needed a jump start. They sent a cab. He made me pay upfront. Gave me a receipt. I misplaced it and ended up sending it in about four months later. They said I only had three months to send it in for reimbursement!
At least AAA pays the bill for services and doesn't expect you to pay and get your money back, maybe.
