We have two 2015 Honda Fits that will be covered for another month. After that, I will have to select a company for a roadside assistance contract. I know from past experience that all the plans use the same local towing companies, so that's not a deciding factor. Any opinions on good or bad plans or options?

I use Good Sam. It covers all your vehicles and family members. Cheapest to get with promotion at Camping world.

It covers my SUV, truck, RVs, and motorcycle.

They try to raise the price with renewal. I just go use anther promotional offer each year.

I use my insurance company for all my vehicles - a couple of $$ a month - they even offer roadside assistance for my travel trailer.
With all the apps available for price comparison, trip planning, etc. - I see no reason to pay the additional cost for the groups that offer those services bundled with their roadside assistance plan...

Check with your insurance company. My price for roadside assistance is the same for 3 different units - various ages and weights.

I think insurance is great for covering unaffordable risks, and otherwise a waste of money. You have your cell phone; you can call your favorite mechanic directly and he will come to you.

I am my favorite mechanic, but at 73 years old, I can no longer pull a car any great distance.

Years ago, I had AAA Plus, but unemployment hit, and I couldn't afford to keep the coverage.

A few weeks ago, I called AAA to subscribe again. You can't pay the extra fee and get AAA Plus right out of the starting gate. You have to be a member in good standing with 3 or less service calls in that first year, before you can upgrade.

For the base plan, you basically only get 5 miles of free towing, and jumping service. Lock-out service and extended distance towing are part of the "Plus" package.

Make sure that you do your homework to find out what services are covered in your first year of coverage, and what services might be added after your first year of coverage no matter which roadside assistance plan you choose.

What are the requirements, if any, to join Good Sam? I'll have to look into them. My aunt and uncle were members of Good Sam for years, because they camped with their 5th wheel trailer with club members.

I was a AAA+ member for 20yrs and had an occasion to use them twice in the past few years. Once in downtown Tampa when a radiator hose blew(their vendor took 1.5hrs to respond) and again When I got a blowout on interstate 4 between Tampa and Orlando in a storm. AAA said 45 min response. After 1.5 hrs I called again, they said 45 more min. After another hr when the rain stopped I changed the tire myself and quit AAA! Now my insurance covers both my cars for about$25 a year!
