I just watched his video on predictions. He said the Canon 5d mark IV won't come out until 2017 and have 75mp. I hope not. Can you imagine editing those files. Yikes!.

That's pretty much what I thought when Sony announced the 42.4mp Sony A7RII. Quite a few people who owned the 24mp Sony A99 said that 24mp was more than enough and that an increase to 42mp was just "marketing hype".

However, since purchasing the Sony A7RII, I have found that 42mp gives you really good "cropping power" and fantastic detail as demonstrated with these images:

Because of this "cropping power" you can sometimes do away with the need to carry heavier tele lenses with you. I have found that editing 42mp files is not a problem and you can buy small 4TB portable drives to help with your storage problems.

If Sony were to produce a 75mp full frame camera, I would most certainly buy one, not just for status, but for shots with amazing detail and cropping power!

Cheers
Rob

Thanks for your response. That's a good point.

Tracy, I would welcome that camera. The possibilities with that many mp is quite versatile. You don't have to shoot at 75mp.
I edit 50mp every day on my several years old regular $600 desktop computer, nothing special or fancy(not at $600?? LoL), with no problems at all.
What's a lot slower is loading to the computer and converting to Jpeg!!
DON'T FEAR THE MP!!
SS

Thanks Sharp Shooter.
I've read that with such high mg that's it's hard to hand hold and get sharp images. Is this true?

I also hope not. I'd much rather "they" (camera manufacturers) work on noise and dynamic range than ever increasing pixel count.
I'd rather have a 20MP camera that I can use at 6400 than a 75MP camera that starts to show noise at 800.
Unfortunately I think "megapixels" is the only spec that counts in marketing.

I totally agree, but like you say MP sell cameras.

The hard drive makers are planning larger models with higher prices.

That's what I've heard also. No sure about the physics but I've heard the same.

It's also very telling that the flagship cameras from both C and N have MPs in the 20s.

Maybe. That 75MP chip will have just about the same pixel density as the chip in the Panasonic LUMIX GX8 and Olympus Pen-F. High ISO performance will top out around the same point as those cameras, too. So will noise and dynamic range.

Diffraction limiting of sharpness will start about f/5.6... So you better use your fastest glass with it. At any rate, your lenses will be the limiting factor on how much of that resolution is really available.

If ya ever get the files loaded, you can crop the hell out them. :)

I'm sure there will be an option such as small, medium and large raw.

Who is this audience for mammoth Mpixs besides the manufacturers of disk storage.

Bill Gates said we should never need more than 64K of RAM. He was obviously not thinking ahead about digital photography or video. We will soon be looking back at 16MP as good for entry level cameras for people using old computers.
