Tracy, I would welcome that camera. The possibilities with that many mp is quite versatile. You don't have to shoot at 75mp.
I edit 50mp every day on my several years old regular $600 desktop computer, nothing special or fancy(not at $600?? LoL), with no problems at all.
What's a lot slower is loading to the computer and converting to Jpeg!!
DON'T FEAR THE MP!!
SS

I have a relatively new iMac, lots of ram, and 25 mp raw files take much longer to load and edit. Huge difference. I don't fear MP but also don't look forward to further slow down with 75 mp. If manufacturers are making the 75 mp cameras , there must be a demand........

I read weeks ago in an article that Canon already has a 120 megapixels sensor locked up in their technology department. The announcement for the 5D Mark IV is suppose to be late Fall 2016 at an assumed Body only price of $3500. It is suppose to come with a new style battery grip too. 75 megapixels? I don't think so. File sizes will be huge.

Once sales slow down they have to come up with something new so people will start buying their product again or they would go out of business plus the compotation would kill them. It's been this way for years. Nothing really new about it....Rich

If ya ever get the files loaded, you can crop the hell out them. :)

I'm sure there will be an option such as small, medium and large raw.

Who is this audience for mammoth Mpixs besides the manufacturers of disk storage.

At a guess I would agree that the crop factor would be the big draw to higher MP count. As for the audience? Sports and action photographers come immediately to mind. Often when I do landscapes I like to crop out and highlight the 'picture with-in a picture'. Also, anyone who does collages or graphic artists who need to pull parts from multiple pictures to make one image will greatly benefit from the cropping ability.

My side question: with that much resolution available and what the size of the pixels must be to get them all on the same size real-estate (the sensor), can the on-board processing in the camera body be used to improve the low-light capability (decrease noise) of the image by combining/averaging adjacent pixels to decrease noise but still produce an image at a respectable resolution (albeit lower that 75MP)? Or am I way off-base here?

I can seem to get the link to work. Look up on YouTube:
Future Cameras: Canon 5d MK IV, Sony a9, Nikon 820 & more.

Oops got the link to work see the next post.

Sony has already produced a 100mp sensor for the Phase One. If Canon does produce this camera, don't be surprised if it has a Sony sensor. Sony is the king of sensors.

My apologies in advance to the thread purists out there. It's been discussed here that sensor densities are approaching a practical limit due to the cost of lenses that could exploit them. We might even see a day where the wavelength of light limits what a sensor can do. (Recall the oil immersion microscope objective lens. I will leave it do someone with more time to check out the physics whether this might be the case someday with respect to camera sensors. Will "moiré rouge" be a future problem?) I can certainly see where the highest densities are useful for specialty cameras designed for technical applications and not for conventional photography. For me, I would more like to see less expensive, higher density sensor in larger formats where even modest lenses could yield high IQ images. The file size problem reminds me of how much more effort it took to deal with single 4x5 frames compared to 35mm rolls. The time, expense, and effort seem proportional to frame size, i.e. or pixel count. Those who can truly use the extreme sensors or who are otherwise just really into it won't mind the file sizes.

Um.. I was just referring to the file size. I love new technology.

File size is the kicker. But three years ago, I bought a BIG drive for my computer. It was a whole terabyte. A month ago I bought a five terabyte drive for about the same price.

I'm one of a handful of diehards who still think aps-c sensors at 24mpx are just perfectly fine. I chose to leave the big iron at the gym. I even got rid of my dearly beloved Nikon D7100 in favor of a Sony A6300.

But in a broad sense you are right. I too love new technology. Sony has put more capability into the a6000 and the a6300 than Nikon and Canon combined. NiCan seems to be going for the mpxls but Sony has been going for capability features. (I love their facial recognition, follow-focus, and 11 frames per second.) I just shot the end of a foot-race for charity. I got images of almost every finisher with one or both feet off the ground as they crossed the finish line. Eleven frames a second made that possible.

It is still only the image, that counts in photography.

Progress and the "progress"?
Somebody recently offered a pair of blue jeans for a cool $1000.00 - pants with numerous "fashionable" holes everywhere.
Where is the famous Concord - flying supersonic?
So, pickup your large format film camera, 12 megapixel Brownie or whatever you might have in your hands and focus on making good images?
By the way, I bet, the guy watching you making photographs, has his 365 megapixel sophisticated camera with 20 lenses - locked up at home.

That's pretty much what I thought when Sony announced the 42.4mp Sony A7RII. Quite a few people who owned the 24mp Sony A99 said that 24mp was more than enough and that an increase to 42mp was just "marketing hype".

However, since purchasing the Sony A7RII, I have found that 42mp gives you really good "cropping power" and fantastic detail as demonstrated with these images:

http://www.robsphotography.co.nz/Sony-Zeiss-FE-55mm-F1.8-lens.html

Because of this "cropping power" you can sometimes do away with the need to carry heavier tele lenses with you. I have found that editing 42mp files is not a problem and you can buy small 4TB portable drives to help with your storage problems.

If Sony were to produce a 75mp full frame camera, I would most certainly buy one, not just for status, but for shots with amazing detail and cropping power!

Cheers
Rob

That's pretty impressive Rob, just for kicks I wonder what the FPS are. I doubt it would be fast enough for BIF but sure would love to try it out on wolves, bears and any slow moving wildlife.
