Depending on your involvement/commitment to photography, I'd consider the following: Let your wife have the D7200. Since you've been using it, you should know most of its functions and are familiar with the owner's manual. So, there would be little or no learning curve of reading and attempting to learn a new camera.

As for you, you've been borrowing your friend's FX camera and now you have a good reason to upgrade to that camera or the D810.

That's sound logic for a man - and not necessarily for an intelligent woman......

Good luck with your selection.

My advice have her start slowly by using your camera. A DSLR can be overwhelming compared to an iPhone.

I agree. From an IPhone I would get her a point and shoot or a bridge camera. This DSLR thing can be overwhelming.

I am trying to get my wife into photography beyond her current iphone 6s selfies. Which Nikon cameras would you recommend? (I like to stay with Nikon since I have an D7200 and also access to my friend's D750). I am considering a new D3300 which will run me about $500 USD (with the 18-55mm lens) or I can get a slightly used 5100 or even 5200 for about $300 (with the same lens). I need something that won't break the bank in case she doesn't get into it but also something that clearly will show her that iphone 6 is NOT that amazing. What do you think? Any suggestions other than finding a new wife?

If your wife is like my wife she would not like all of the bells and whistles but likes the ease. Get something with good glass that is not too complicated. But if you decide to spring for something extra you can always set the camera to program and it is the same as a point and shoot. Problem solved. But then you have the problem of actually getting her to shoot. I have to force my wife to shoot where she will tell me that you do it because you do a better job than I do. So I say, if you want that picture you will have to do it yourself which she does and does a good job. Taught her to take multiple exposures and then we select from the lot. I do the same things with my children who seem to select the easy way out which I am always there to point out the better more obviously harder way. Ease is the way out for most people and I believe they have to be reminded but then again many are content with ease when they are doing it but when they hire it out they want the best. Go figure.

What are you thinking? Don't pay attention to any of us. All good things come to and end as they say.

You're asking a question about something for your wife. I'd suggest you take her to camera shops and have her try a few; find the one "she" finds easy to hold and operate; ease of controls etc.
Now go and be a good boy and do as you're told ;)

Refurbished D5300 is more versatile. Try Cameta Camera or Adorama.

D7100 refurbished from adorama, $549. I just got one as a back up to my full frame . I couldn't tell it from new ,no tax and free shipping and you would be very familiar with it !!

It makes sense to stay within brand. It will also make it easier to assist because of familiarity.

Why not buy a bridge camera or an advanced P/S, something you don't presently own, so if you travel in the future, you will have an alternative to take pictures with a camera you won't have to worry about or drag weight.

The key to this is baby steps. Buying something too sophisticated might discourage.

Doesn't she deserve a Nikon identical to yours? And then you would also have a backup.

Good political move. You can't lose with Nikon. The lens are so good video film makers are using their vintage lens. Good luck.

Two weeks ago I purchased a refurbished Nikon D5500 with the 18-55mm lens for $569.95 from Adorama. It's like new and works perfectly. At that time they had the choice of black or red.
The Nikon D5500 has many features of the higher end cameras but the controls are buried in the touch screen menus, instead of being quickly available via dials. The articulating live view screen is touch sensitive so you can take pictures like on an iphone (by touching the screen). It has a 24 mp sensor and with this model Nikon eliminated the low pass filter so pictures are sharper.
It's quite a sweet camera at a very sweet price.
Just inserting my 2 cents.

If you buy a factory refurbished unit from Cameta, they will give you a one year warranty.

I concur. Although your upgrading logic is hard to fault, I think the jump to a DSLR requires a commitment that may not be there. Get something that can still slip in a pocket or purse and see how that goes.

Pick the one you love using the most. You know, the one you really want and she'd never let you buy. Then you can borrow it from her.

Maybe she doesn't have any interest in carrying around a big camera and a cell phone is all she wants. Ask her before buying. But, on the other hand, if you know she won't really like carrying around a big box camera, then get the Nikon 'you' really like, give it to her, after it sits around for a while, take it off her hands. LOL
