I think you went off the rails at "trying to get my wife into photography". If it's not her thing, no kind of convenient advanced toy or proof of better image quality will entice her. You don't need anything expensive for someone who's only photographic interest is a good selfie.

My wife gardens, I golf. She does painting and crafts, I do photography. Make the same deal I did. Whatever I spend on golf, she gets to spend on the yard and garden. Whatever I spend on camera gear, she gets to spend on crafts and girly stuff. May sound twice as expensive, but in the long run it's cheaper than a camera sitting in the closet. She's happy, I'm happy... what price can you assign to that?

couldn't agree with you more. Erica (late spouse) had many interests and i always wanted her to be able to have the things she needed to get to where she wanted to go. i told her from our first year, that we were equals and as there were things i wanted in my life, she had every right to have the things in her life that would fulfill her. is was a great 36 years for us both; with no regrets.

The interest in any hobby is up to your wife. NEVER try to inflict an intrest in photography on the wife. Furthermore don't belittle her cell phone photos. I just saved your marriage.

Good observation...my wife always whined about not being able to get as good of pictures as I do...so I bought her the exact same camera. Now she blames me because she can't take good pictures. You just can't win, or even break even. It has to be in their heart rather than in the gear they have.

You mean I can get a Nikon for my wife...I've had her for fifty years so I guess trading for a new Nikon would be a good deal!! By the way, don't tell her I said that.

If she's so hot on her iphone and you want her to experience the increase in image quality and the versatility of the DSLR then maybe the a6000 or the a6300 is the way to go. It's not that much bigger than a cell phone, it has a crop sensor and a lot more pixels and it will fit in her purse a lot easier. If you want her to accept your desires than meet her half way. With an adaptor she can use all your lenses too, so you won't have to spend a lot on extra lenses and you can use almost any lens out there regardless of brand. For her it may be the cat's meow. Something to consider.

I have the a6000 and yes, it is a good camera...but it cannot and should not be compared to a cell phone in any way. IMHO

The only way it would fit in any of my purses is to not include either of the two lenses that came with it. Unless of course, I removed everything else I carried in my purse. However, it is smaller and lighter than most dslrs. And getting a good inexpensive adapter can also be a problem. Plus many adapters limit some of the features on the camera. Ok for an experiences photog, but not a beginner.

It also has a huge learning curve for those not familiar with digital cameras. It would not be my recommendation for a first time camera.

I still say let her select her own but lead her to one of the good long zoom bridge cameras. Very easy to use, good IQ and a lot of fun. With a fully articulated screen she can take selfies and has the choice of using the viewfinder or the lcd screen for normal shots. Plus Lots of fixed modes to choose from. Most are also very lightweight. Several good choices in your price range. If you buy from Costco or Sams, she can play with it for 3 months and if it doesn't work out it is an easy full refund return.

Good luck. Hoping she will come to enjoy sharing this fun hobby with you.

I disagree, you should start with Aperture priority or Program. you can at least change the settings. Auto won't teach you anything. I prefer starting on manual mode but when I started in photography there wasn't any auto anything. You might screw up half of your images at first but you learn what your camera does. The learning curve is a lot faster this way also.

I am trying to get my wife into photography beyond her current iphone 6s selfies. Which Nikon cameras would you recommend? (I like to stay with Nikon since I have an D7200 and also access to my friend's D750). I am considering a new D3300 which will run me about $500 USD (with the 18-55mm lens) or I can get a slightly used 5100 or even 5200 for about $300 (with the same lens). I need something that won't break the bank in case she doesn't get into it but also something that clearly will show her that iphone 6 is NOT that amazing. What do you think? Any suggestions other than finding a new wife?

I am doing the same with my husband. I was ready to move up to a better camera; so I "gave" him my Nikon D5000 to justify getting the D7100 for myself. He's not interested in learning all the modes nor bells & whistles of the camera but he does like to go shooting with me. I don't care if he shoots all auto either. Now it is something we can do together.

I will say this though...the kit 18-55 wasn't enough reach for him, so I gave him the 18-300 and he loves it. I use my D7100 with the 18-140 lens that came with it...also use the 24-70/2.8 quite often. The D5000 takes great pictures. It was my first DSLR and your wife should love it too (it even has an articulating screen!). Good luck!

By the way, I recently purchased the Sony a6000 and it is an awesome camera!!! Smaller & lightweight. The 35/1.8 lens is the best! $400 for the camera...$400 for the lens (& a tilt screen). My husband wasn't intimidated by this camera at all...in fact, he probably likes it better.

It makes sense to stay within brand. It will also make it easier to assist because of familiarity.

Why not buy a bridge camera or an advanced P/S, something you don't presently own, so if you travel in the future, you will have an alternative to take pictures with a camera you won't have to worry about or drag weight.

The key to this is baby steps. Buying something too sophisticated might discourage.

I agree with this logic. I really wanted to take my DSLR to Ireland but I'm pretty sure I'll take the Sony and all 3 lenses. I could change my mind though....I'll have to think about that!!!

That's OK brother, many of us whine because we can't take as good of pictures as you! Just smile and love her!

I am currently using a Sony A65 with the Sony 18-250 lens. I am not a professional photographer but I need clarity for what I do as much as any pro. I do fire-rescue photography and do wrecks for the NCSHP. As such a bit of my stuff ends up being enlarged for court use. I'm thinking about up-grading to the A99 because of it's low light capability ( read into that the fact that a lot of people wreck at night on back roads ) but it's a lot of money and I do this as a volunteer fireman.
