I am trying to get my wife into photography beyond her current iphone 6s selfies. Which Nikon cameras would you recommend? (I like to stay with Nikon since I have an D7200 and also access to my friend's D750). I am considering a new D3300 which will run me about $500 USD (with the 18-55mm lens) or I can get a slightly used 5100 or even 5200 for about $300 (with the same lens). I need something that won't break the bank in case she doesn't get into it but also something that clearly will show her that iphone 6 is NOT that amazing. What do you think? Any suggestions other than finding a new wife?

Trillion I am going to give you an alternative.
I tried the 3300 of a friend and thought it was a good camera as reviewers have said. I still have Nikon lens and had the D800.
I switched to Sony mirrorless and have the expensive a7s.
Bought the Sony a6000 which has been a big success for them the last few years. A new version is out the 6300 for $900.
The a6000 can be had for $399 it used to be $800. I love the a6000. It is light with a simple adaptor can take almost any lens for other makers. It's auto focus is the best I have tried. It is comfortable and you want to use only this camera. Good luck.

Thanks Tom for your recommendation. But my problem is that I am planning to get myself the Nikon D750 or the D810 this thanksgiving or Christmas. You see, I am trying to get her into photography so that I can justify my new toy. And if I get a Sony for my wife, she definitely will say, "Hey, if Nikon is that good, why am I getting a Sony?" I can't win, can I?

You can always say, "they're all good, just some better than others." Then let her hold your new 'big rig' and tell her, "honey, I wouldn't expect you to be burdened by the physical weight of a -my new- D750/810." A heavy flash hanging off the top, would add impact.
Better if you can keep a straight face. 8-)

My advice have her start slowly by using your camera. A DSLR can be overwhelming compared to an iPhone.

why not try a d7100? it would be just like your d7200, so it would be a lot easier for you to teach her how to use it, and if she decided she was happier with the iPhone, you would end up with a great backup camera. check Nikon, B&H Photo, Adorama, for a good refurbished or used body.

when you make that leap, seriously consider the d750 of the d810. it will be more like your d7200 so the learning curve will be smaller.

okay, she needs her own camera because I don't like to find hand lotion on my viewfinder and finger nail polish on my lens, nor do I like my camera or lens thrown, dropped, kicked or sat on. And we can't wait till June for the DL series because we are going to Cancun this April...

My experience selecting a camera for wifey is a losing battle! There is always something wrong with what I think may work for her. Best approach is for her to identify what is lacking with her current camera setup and then take her to a camera store for her to pick something out. This gets you off the hook because it is her decision and therefore much more likely to succeed.

My wife and I were at Bestbuy sometime ago and she did found a camera she liked - it was the IRON MAN RED D3300. No, she wasn't impressed with the IQ of the pictures or the features of camera, not even the weight or price. It was the IRON MAN RED case that she liked. Then when she saw the D5500, she loved the articulating screen. You guessed it, it will allow her to take selfies something the iphone 6 does so well. Bestbuy does carry the D5500 in red but at $850. That is going to eat up 1/3 of my FF fund...

I would recommend the Nikon D3300 from B&H. It can be purchased new for $600.00. You get a 18-55mm, 55-200 kit lenses and a camera bag to fit all gear. You can buy it with only 18-55mm for $460.00.

In my opinion, a DSLR is for someone who is already "sure" about really learning photography and post-processing. I got my wife the Nikon P900 since she doesn't want to change lenses and does minimal post-processing. It was an upgrade from her Canon SX30IS. She also loves the new super zoom. It's the perfect camera for her.

Whichever one you want to use after she gives up the hobby.

If it was my wife and I, I would be tempted to buy "her" the camera I want for me, hoping she would not be that interested and look at it as a workaround to get me the new dream camera ;)
