Does she want to move up, or is it you?
If it is you then it may be a waste of time and money.
She always has the phone, and may not like lugging around a camera.
Start her with a decent quality "pocket zoom" style or a little bigger if she carries a purse.
Or start her with a good bridge camera.

But, most important, make sure she is on board with it. She may not want to move up.

My girlfriend has an Iphone6s. I thought she would love using my D7100, and she does.. sort of. I think she has taken about 200 pictures with it, maybe. But she does use it for video, it usually stays mounted to the cheap tripod I gave her and she will even ask me to turn on the 'video camera' to record events at her house. I have seen so many of these videos with her in them taking pictures with her Iphone. ;-) On the plus side, I have gotten good at editing her videos and uploading them for her.

I am trying to get my wife into photography beyond her current iphone 6s selfies. Which Nikon cameras would you recommend? (I like to stay with Nikon since I have an D7200 and also access to my friend's D750). I am considering a new D3300 which will run me about $500 USD (with the 18-55mm lens) or I can get a slightly used 5100 or even 5200 for about $300 (with the same lens). I need something that won't break the bank in case she doesn't get into it but also something that clearly will show her that iphone 6 is NOT that amazing. What do you think? Any suggestions other than finding a new wife?

I have the d5100 and it is a great beginner dslr camera.

However, I would suggest starting her off with a good bridge super zoom camera. The Nikon p610 is in your price range. Has many auto modes for easy shooting plus has all the custom modes such as manual, P,A,S. It is also much smaller and lighter than a dslr and is simple and fun to use and I find the IQ quite good. It also has an articulating screen. If you can find a Canon sx50 it has all of the above and shoots in raw. Plus its HQ burst mode is great for moving targets such as birds and kids.

I also have the Sony a6000 with both kit lenses. It is smaller and lighter than a dslr but long lenses are extremely limited. But I would stay with Nikon dslr so you can easily help her and share lenses.

I have the Nikon D5300 and I love it. I think the 5000 series cameras have a lot for the price. I am a woman and tried to learn digital slr on an Olympus. For some reason, and I'm not knocking the Olympus, but I just didn't have good luck with it. I bought the Nikon, and it seems easier for me to understand and use. I have the 18-200 lens on it and, although I have other lens, I find my 18-200 is a good lens to have if one doesn't want to carry a camera bag. The little Sony is awesome too, but you didn't ask about that, so my answer is the 5100

Thanks Tom for your recommendation. But my problem is that I am planning to get myself the Nikon D750 or the D810 this thanksgiving or Christmas. You see, I am trying to get her into photography so that I can justify my new toy. And if I get a Sony for my wife, she definitely will say, "Hey, if Nikon is that good, why am I getting a Sony?" I can't win, can I?

Maybe you can remind her that gear doesn't take pictures, we do. Imagine if she had the eye and produced superior results with what ever camera/brand to yours.

Have you considered one of the smaller Nikon System 1 cameras? They look so cute in red  ...and they fit into a purse.

Have a look at this one too...a great all around general purpose camera with 60x zoom and shoots RAW. Not to complicated to start out with...Your wife would love it.

Give her your 7200, you don't need it.

My advice have her start slowly by using your camera. A DSLR can be overwhelming compared to an iPhone.

As owner of a Nikon D7200 and iPhone 6, I must say they are both pretty amazing. The suggestion of the Sony a6000 along with a Nikon adaptor should work out fine for you. She will like the size of the a6000. It fits in many cup holders. I use my iPhone 6 much less now though still think it pretty amazing. Having the Sony with adapter could work out very well for you. If she takes to it you have accomplished your mission. If not you have a good mirror less camera for your car that works well with your glass. Then again she might get the D7200 because you discovered the joys of the a6000. Really can't lose.

get the one you want the most plus a simple bridge camera. when she gives up on the good one, give her the bridge and viola, you've got your dream camera.

I would consider used or reburbished. I like B&H or KEH used equipment.

A mint D7000 with lens from ebay. That should be around the money you want to spend.
