I'm really worried now. I have Win7 on my 4 year old laptop and I haven't upgraded yet. I'm taking it with me when I visit the grandkids in Portlandia tomorrow. My son-in-law in an IT specialist and has fixed my computers many times before. He has agreed to load Win10 on my laptop in exchange for me doing some work on the electrical wiring in their house. I think that will be a fair trade since I have 40 years experience as a union electrician.

Yes, right you are, thats why when you buy that Mac, you can keep it for many many years and it will continue to run as fast as the first day you had it.

So, in the end it costs you a little bit more once to save more by not needing to replace it anywhere near as often. ;)

I agree with you on Linux - very fast on less hardware for sure.

OS X btw is based on BSD Unix, so security is built in from the start.

As I said though - I have a lovely Apple laptop which is stuck in the last decade because it will not run any more modern programs because the OS is old and the OS cannot be updated because the hardware cannot support it. It will not even run a more modern version of browsers.

So I have a great DVD player for holidays and limited web access but not much else. I could stick Linux on a PC from the last century and still run OK.

Must be pretty old then. Not an aluminum model?

I have an old Mac SE in a closet - it won't do me any good anymore either, but it is over 20 years old now.

I have a different story. I have a Dell laptop that I have hooked up into a dock and use an monitor and keyboard and mouse. I had Windows 7 Home. I downloaded Windows 10, waited an hour or so and bam, there it was. I have only one exception, my external speakers don't work, only the speakers in the laptop. I will go online to Dell later and see what they can do. All in all, I was very pleased. I am not by any means a computer expert, but I do know enough to get myself into a lot of trouble, which I have done in the past, but this experience was very pleasant. I haven't used any of the Windows 10 benefits, but after the download it put me where I was when I started. So, I'm happy, now having said that the whole damn thing may blow up. Good luck.

Me too ... Any time you down load a file or program that huge you are bound to have glitches in the transfer. Best to have a disc.

It's because of the sense of urgency due to Microsoft giving a year to upgrade for free.
You come out with a new operating system and a lot of people are going to sit on the fence for awhile. You tell them that they can get it for free for a limited time....feeding frenzy.

Windows 10 is definitely faster on my system than 7 was and at least as stable(now), so it was a win for me.

But for those happily running 7....it will receive updates until 2030.

Are your external speakers plugged into the dock or directly to the laptop?

Docks are sketchy when it comes to compatibility on all the ports.

I'm taking my desktop to the Computer Doctor down the road and let him do the deed. I have no intention of even trying to do this. The puter needs a good cleaning, inside and out anyhow, so this is great time to get it done.

Thanks for the info. I have 3 Win 7 Pro systems, so I will probably put Win 10 on one of them and see what happens.
