Thanks for the warning, I was wondering if I wanted to make the switch, now I know.

Personally - I would wait for at least the first service patch, and maybe a second. This may take 6 months or more ...but at least it will have most of the bugs, and security issues cleaned up by then

In reality, I would bet that you can easily pare down that list. I only have found 1 program that I always used that cannot be had in a Mac version - Visio, and I have managed to live without it for years now... BTW - if I do need Visio, I can always fire up my Virtual machine for XP, Windows 7 or Windows 10.

Yes, not trouble free, but far less trouble for sure ;)

sadly - no. I have a great number of programs installed - which is part of the problem as Windows appears most happy with a clean install and just MS Office suite with perhaps an accounts program. I really make Windows work for its desk space - which is another reason why I get problems.
I suppose it is like some long term wives - they drive you nuts but you couldn't imagine living without them.

FWIW - the current Apple/Mac OS reads and writes Office.
That is - you can send files from Word, Excel, and so on to someone using a Mac - and they can open, read, correct them - and email them back to you and you should be able to manipulate them as well....

I think you misunderstand - I am not talking about how many programs are installed,I was saying the THE ONLY software that there is no Mac alternative to was a single windows package, Visio, and the reality was that I managed fine without it.

From my standpoint, the number or programs installed means nothing if you have no required use for them. So they should not dictate the operating system or version.

I would agree the best way to set up Windows is a clean install and then add what programs are needed for operation.

But when you say that because you have a lot of programs installed so there is no way to switch versions of the OS, that is kind of shortsighted isn't it?

BTW - I probably have just as many if not more apps installed on my Mac, and upgrade the OS as soon as the new version of OS X becomes available.

 and

Misunderstandings again - I was referring to switching from Windows to Mac I know that some programs are available in both Win and Mac but others could be for Win or Mac only.

I will see what happens with Win 10. Windows may be a scruffy old mongrel compared with a Mac but I have known it since Win 3 and it is low maintenance and familiar.

I have a lovely Mac laptop that I purchased used a few years ago. It is beautifully engineered and displays pictures and video superbly but - if I want to upgrade it and try to install any more modern software it tells me that software will not run on that version of the OS and if I try to upgrade the OS it tells me that the hardware will not support a later version of the OS. Such is the problems with Macs - you either stay with the OS and software from that era or purchase a new one (selling the old one to some unsuspecting Windows user). Add to this the very much higher cost of a Mac and it is a non starter for some people.
Windows may have many problems but it will run most of your old favourite programs.

I was talking about going from PC To Mac as well. ;)

Many people that switched to Mac from PC's knew windows quite well too, which is why they saw the light probably ;)

For example, I spent 22 years running Dos then Windows from 3.0 to the Windows 7, as well as the server environments, and still switched to a Mac at home several years ago, and would not think of going back.

I have only seen ONE program that I made use of that was Windows only - There are probably others, but the point is if you don't need them then it does not matter.

The alternatives exist on both platforms.

Low maintenance? Not a term I would use about Windows in the world I came from :D

I wondered how MS could upgrade thousands of computers on July 29th, well it is coming in WAVES they tell me. It is now 7:26 pm on July 29th and nothing is coming in to my computer from MS. I wounder just what kind of waves they are?

It's supposed to go to the insiders first(which is funny because we already had it). Then it would go out to those who reserved. I heard it could take a couple of weeks.

Positive waves! :)

Seriously, I understand that there are two levels or priority levels for the disemination of the OS. A fast ring that will receive the update first. And a slow ring that will receive the update AFTER all of the fast users have been updated.
Not sure where you are in the ring priority. Have patience.

I'm installing Windows 10 on my spare (as in the last time I used the dang thing was in November) laptop. I started it around 1:30 and here we are at 6:15 and it's saying 75% for the fourth time. Yawn...

Yeah, it took about that long to install the preview on one of the two machines I have.

Low maintenance = cheap.

Macs are much better engineered but also much more expensive. Not everyone can or wants to pay that price - especially if you need to upgrade every few years to be able to use the latest software. PC's are cheap and very easy to upgrade at low cost.

The very cheapest - and arguably most secure system - is a PC with a Linux OS. Linux will run OK on ancient machines that would grind to a halt under Windows.

Slow is good in this case. Let the impatient ones get the upgrade and find all the problems. Hopefully - in a couple of months - Win 10 will be stable enough for the cautious ones to download (we have a year until the offer ends).

Interestingly there are several companies already selling their programs to sort out problems with Windows 10!

Yes, right you are, thats why when you buy that Mac, you can keep it for many many years and it will continue to run as fast as the first day you had it.

So, in the end it costs you a little bit more once to save more by not needing to replace it anywhere near as often. ;)

I agree with you on Linux - very fast on less hardware for sure.

OS X btw is based on BSD Unix, so security is built in from the start.
