The Longevity of Macs

One thing that persuaded me to get a Mac for my wife a few years ago, and then buy one for myself was the great longevity that Mac owners here reported. Having a machine run reliably year after year sounded like a good feature.

I bought my first Mac 9 years ago and it is still going strong. I encouraged my wife to get hers and she's had it for 5 years and thoroughly enjoys it.

I have an old G5 which works just fine. The problem is that it won't take any OS past 10.5, and the browser is out of date so a lot of web sites won't work. Also, I had an external hard drive for backup with time machine, and it quit working. I had a very hard time finding a replacement that will work with the old operating system. The people at the Apple store were amazed that anyone would be using a Mac that old.

I have a G5 sitting on a shelf awaiting a rescuerer. I once inquired whether Apple would upgrade to mother board to the best Intel i- CPU of the time. They were strictly hands off and I didn't know anyone I would trust for that job. Mine had the 15-inch screen that fit my real estate perfectly. Finally went with an Apple refurbished MacBookPro that had the optical drive.
